As talented as SP were musically, I would have loved to hear more cover songs from them.

They did Landslide, which was OK; it didn't really show off their entire range. I think their cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" should have been a bit faster paced.

I'd love to hear them do "Under Pressure" or "Kashmir". I think they'd really do those classics justice.

I'm not so sure about Under Pressure, but Kashmir would be nice :)

I like Queen and all, but I don't really see SP covering them... Freddie's got one of those voices... I don't think Billy could do a Queen song justice.

Billy's voice is an entirely different kind of cool.

i prefer their landslide to all others, including the original, but i guess i am bias. yeah i enjoy when pearl jam cover songs. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. bwbw single is interesting.

Oh yes, I forgot to say how much I love their cover of Landslide. It was the first Pumpkins song I ever heard, and I was completely put off by it at first (it was the voice...) but now I really love it.

i like their cover of Never Let Me Down. Billy's cover of Johanna was awesome. I still want to hear them covering The Zoo...

this really takes me back. the Pumpkins never covered Sunday Bloody Sunday in full. you've most likely heard the Edge's solo version which has gone around on the file sharing networks tagged as SP or Radiohead or Thom Yorke & Billy Corgan since the earliest days of Napster.

:erm: I think SP has done a ton of good covers.

here's a good list of covers SP has done (note this is focused on SP covers, not Zwan or BC Solo or Side Projects....you'll have to mess with the search filters to see those).

indeed...teases and often just song portions fused into a longer overall medley (like we saw with the new CCS and HMM).

I can't wait till SP takes a break from all this heavy crap and gets weird again. I mean, I like it well enough, but not enough to keep going in the car.

i got to talk to bruce swedien who made all of mj's records with quincy jones. he said michael was the easiest person to work with ever. he said you couldnt make his voice sound bad. everything about it was musical.

they've always been a diverse band with some heavy songs, though i agree that the new material may have been slanted more in this direction due to a backlash against TFE and billy's desire to burn lies off souls and crush bones to dust.

personally for me, it was extremely satisfying....but i agree based on the AG stuff and some of the updates to older material that more "weird" songs (i.e. spacier tunes, etc.) would help complement the heavy ones and keep their output more diverse.

i think they cover songs way too music sometimes.

 way too much?

not sure if thats what you meant, but i'll comment anyway: for a while now i think all the new cover songs these past 2 years have basically just been a tool to bond with the new band members, practice abrupt time changes, etc.

plus its pure awesomeness.

No one said Girl Named Sandoz? I think thats actually my favorite non-live cover, followed by Dreaming. At least they put a spin on the Blondie version.

And I remember downloading the MM/SP/RH/Whatever cover from Napster. Good times.

Actually so do I, but it would storm up some controversy, especially with the "rivalry" between Billy and Kurt Cobain. Can you imagine what NME would say? How often did they cover it in 1997?

IWishIWasBlank

NME was in the 2nd grade in 1997. They thought "penis" was a funny.

My favorite cover by the Pumpkins is "Venus in Furs". I love the original, and I can't stand most of the covers I've heard, which usually go for maximum bombast or overemphasize the exotic elements (DeVotchKa's cover is a great example, it's guilty on both counts).

The Pumpkins' cover is ambient without overcooking it. And Billy's got that sleazy nasal voice that works perfectly for a song like this.
