View Full Version : help on transfering vhs tapes
lucid_interval 05-24-2008, 09:50 AM i have many tapes i want to transfer (including some possibly unsurfaced pumpkins shows). my pc has many different inputs (including video inputs, tv card etc)
what is the best software to use for this., + does any one have any tips for the best way to do this without too much technicality.
your best bet is to give them to someone else to do for you, eg. that starlight video productions dude, he'll do it for ya i'm sure.

that would be fine except i want to transfer other stuff as well, so id rather do it mysel.f i said i possibly have some unsurfaced shows; im sure the starlight dude hardly wants to spend hours sifting through old family tapes etc
MonteLDS 05-24-2008, 10:57 AM There are simple hardware that will record tape to dvd on the fly. Its the less time consuming way to do this stuff

yes, hardware i dont have, nor money for it + i want to edit on the pc anyway, and i want to do it soon.
all i want is recommendations for software to use!!! i have a pc with all the relevant audio and video inputs.
MonteLDS 05-24-2008, 12:28 PM u want to do editing? ok.. get ready for a lot of work though.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, but i think that might be over kill for you if you aren't going to be doing a lot of manual edditing
Pinnacle Studio might be a good choice.. its pretty basic and has a lot of pre-made effects

ive used premiere before but ill look into that other one.
my main query is finding some decent capture software, i know you can use adobe premiere, but is there anything else, does pinnacle studio have good capturing tools.
redbull 05-24-2008, 01:02 PM Lucid, you should check around the doom9.org forums...
MonteLDS 05-24-2008, 01:03 PM you have to check what hardware you use against software that can capture it.
I only move over video via firewire for capturing. My other camera is a hard disk.
so first find out what software supports your capture card
lucid_interval 05-24-2008, 01:11 PM its a legacy video capture device, i will be connecting a vcr to it via the composite sockets (or whichever ones are yellow-video, red and white- l and r audio)
im gonna try virtual dub for capturing, and then maybe premiere for cleaning up and editing.
Brute Squad 05-25-2008, 02:10 PM What has led you to believe that these pumpkins shows are possibly unsurfaced?
starlightvideoproductions 05-25-2008, 11:25 PM I usually use Virtual Dub to capture, Premiere to Edit and Cinema Craft Encoder to encode. CCE is easily the best encoder and should be easily found on torrent sites. To make the menu, for a first time user try out TMPGEncs DVD author. If you do have some shows that are possibly unsurfaced, I would love to capture them myself if you'd be willing.

Question... Isn't the most important piece of equipment the VHS player used in the transfer? Analagous to a good Nakamichi deck for transferring analog cassette tapes, don't you need a high quality player, properly cleaned/aligned/etc.
I have a 1st gen copy of 5/19/00 that I tried to transfer on my parents VHS/DVD combo deck the last time I was at home and really just wasn't satisfied with the generation loss.
starlightvideoproductions 05-26-2008, 11:29 AM Yeah, I have a JVC D-VHS VCR for that. Cost a few hundred. Excellent quality though. The VCR does make a huge difference.
redbull 05-27-2008, 03:54 PM I have 2000/08/06 and 2000/08/11 tapes that need transferred. anyone?
(2nd and 4th gen, respectively)

Now that you got some help....
Check http://www.splra.org/wiki/index.php?title=SPTours to determine if the quoted statement is accurate.

i already checked, they are surfaced, one is 1991-08-17 but the one i have seems to be superior quality to the one floating around so i dunno how splra has come up with vhs1.
starlightvideoproductions 05-27-2008, 07:10 PM Well 1991-08-17 was circulated by me. It was made on an older standalone DVD burner, so the quality is not up to the quality of recent transfers. Unfortunately, the guy I got that DVD from is in jail for selling bootlegs so I'll never get another copy. Oh well, whatta ya gonna do.
Redbull, I have to set up my caputuring equiptment again. Then I'd be game.

the version i have is from a vhs from a bootleg company from london (it came with a printed case and label and says arrow productions 1991 on the back, even has an address) and the quality is definitely better
