View Full Version : Listen to my girlfriend's new song!

Seeing as I don't have a girlfriend, i made a song with my band Boutros Bubba. Actually, an album. Recorded by Milan Ciric, Metslawier and mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac)'s Mastering Service, Chicago.

We put two songs online of that album and they're called called Chew and Flip Coins and you can listen to them on www.myspace.com/boutrosbubba .

Our singer's voice is at least as sweet as I_was_aborted's female friend's and our triphop/reggae grooves are possibly even deeper.

Oh btw, anyone here read The Wire?

I was hoping for something a little better from you considering all of the criticism you've gave me in the past. I especially like how you say on your myspace that "Boutros Bubba writes melodic and dissonant songs that are often rythmically challenging". Although I guess maybe you guys just have a different idea of what you consider "challenging" because I do not hear much I would consider rhythmically challenging. I also missed any real good melodic breaks from all the dissonance from the few tracks and youtube videos I made it through. I jus feel a rather large unbalance leaning towards the dissonant chaos, which loses my attention.

I'm curious though if you will at least answer me one question as I feel your sound is very generic. What do you feel makes your band unique or special in this genre of music?

I don't get this. How can you say "absolutely every thread", when Mark only posts here maybe once every couple months??

This place is crawling with ridicule, criticism and sarcasm...how is it that when Mark is involved, feelings get hurt and panties wad up?

Thanks for listening. Yeah it's more like rhythmically challenged I know. But seriously, the songs on myspace are pretty straightforward, I believe there's one with a 7/4 beat but that's all. There are some more weird time signatures on the rest of the album but it's not like it's math mania or something. It's more challenging than Tool at least ;)

Please listen to the songs on myspace, especially the ones I mentioned, instead of the youtube vids since those are in very bad quality while songs like Chew or Flip Coins are amongst the best we have to offer, if you ignore the shitty myspace audio quality.

How do you think it sounds like dissonant chaos if you call it generic at the same time? I mean generic is like Coldplay to me and dissonant chaos is the polar opposite of that. I also don't there is something like a balance between dissonance and melody that we should strive for, i mean we could try making songs either completely melodic or as dissonant as you can imagine and theoretically they could still be good. Also I don't really see what you mean, in those two new songs at least there's a good amount of melody.

We really like our songs as they are now, and what puts us apart from a lot of bands is that we made an effort to make every instrument sound defined and clear in the mix. The vocals are the least loud in the mix obviously. Another thing I think are quite original are the singing melodies, in a song like Chew they're also really quite catchy.

I'm not saying that we're doing anything new, but it's original and enjoyable enough for me and I certainly don't think it sounds generic.

That's because he doesn't give a shit about anyone's opinions here, he doesn't care to share anything with you guys (unless it's a blazing guitar solo of course)...and generally he only even comes to this place because I'll mention something someone said, or mention that I posted his music and so-n-so said such-n-such. So he's an elitist...big deal. So's most of the netphorian population. Get over it, is all I'm saying...

I'm not saying that we're doing anything new, but it's original and enjoyable enough for me and I certainly don't think it sounds generic.

Well for one, dissonant chaos is something that ins't uncommon in a lot of music these days so I meant generic for that style of music. The guitar, drums and bass are all have very straightfoward sounds with little effects or any unique tone qualities so they just sound rather forgettable. I think some of your music, especially the two songs you mentioned, sound a lot like Sonic Youth or some Butthole Surfers I've heard but without that aspects that make those bands unique. I guess maybe you haven't really given Tool a chance(or you were just making a joke) if you were serious about being more challenging than them. Tool really rock out in some odd times and the music still has a very natural flow to it, which can be hard to accomplish. It seems whenever you guys get into something that has any rhythm to it, it always comes off as very jerky and scrambled. I guess thats maybe the intention but I find it annoying that everytime the pace picks up, the music loses its flow and everything seems to fall apart. While that can be an interesting dynamic, it gets annoying when it seems to happen in every single song.

As far as the generic comment, while I find Coldplay to be generic myself I also find the tons of Sonic Youth rip off bands out there to be equally annoying. There is a lot of shitty noise rock/dissonant music out there that just rips off stuff that came before it while offering nothing new. There are tons of generic bands in every genre of music. I just don't see anything that sets you apart or grabs my attention, I feel like I've heard many local bands that sound very similar at all the small rock venues here. Guitar, Bass, Drums and distorted vocals all playing dissonant music while occasionally breaking into a quiet part here and there. Maybe I just don't enjoy the style of music, but I know I've heard plenty of crazy noise stuff that I enjoy so I'm not sure. The only reason I mentioned anything about balance was because you mention being melodic in your description but I don't consider the vocals to have much melodic value in anything I've heard. It doesn't really strike me as catchy either. I just don't even see a point about mentioning being melodic because I just don't feel that is there. I don't see the melodies as original, it just sounds like a whiney singer who mumbles and groans into the microphone.

I think a lot of bands also try to make their instruments really have some definition and independence in their mixing, its just a lot easier when you only have 4 things going on. Actually in the last Tool album the vocals are the lowest in the mix while the drums, bass and guitar take turns carrying the songs throughout the album. There are tons of bands that strive for that sound so I hardly find that an original idea either. I don't see how that sets you apart, especially when considering how poorly this seems to play out live. Anyways, I don't have a lot of time so here is my reply, sorry if its jumbled and scatterbrained but I wanted to get back to you. At least you're happy with what you are doing.

Can't access the myspace stuff unfortunately so I thought I'd give you some feedback on the eighties TV show theme song. Love the bass tone man, fuckin' lovely. It feels to me like everything grew out of that first riff which sounds good on first listen but wears quickly. All the other riffs in the song are much cooler and if it were me I'd try to write a better lead riff that's up to the standard of the others and expand it with vocals. Cool drumming too.

I'm probably jusging this too harshly since it may just be short sketch or a bit of craic but I really love the stuff after the main riff.

What's your bass setup on the recording?

smashingjj
04-16-2008, 01:28 PM
like on the whole album, i used my boss bass distortion pedal, a david eden amp and a big ampeg (8x 10" i think) speaker. yes it's merely an interlude, but i like it. we sometimes play it when the guitarist is tuning. i'll maybe upload the two songs to sendspace later.
