not sure exactly. a recent favorite was some kind of asian pear, brown on the outside, and shaped like a teardrop, with a long upper part. really, really crispy, but not the way a regular pear is crispy when it's not yet ripe. it's sweet and crunchy.


i was thinking the other day about maybe making a blog about each new pear i try. blogging about daily life is really not something i like the idea of, but a topic-specific blog such as a new pear blog might be something i could handle

i like canned pears. they are so smooth. i wonder how they get the peel off? it looks the material high end puppets are often made of, and the shape reminds me of snoopy... the few times i bought fresh pears they just rotted. i ended up hating them, throwing them away and decontaminating the area where the rotting fruit was.

I tried these tiny baby sugar pears last month. They were quite sweet, but since they're so small, it was really difficult to reach that perfect balance of mushiness vs. crispness. I hate my pears too crisp and I loathe them when they're soupy.

These were itty bitty and there were 9 in a plastic molded thingy in the produce section. The one I ate the day I bought it was FAR too crisp and flavorless. A couple days later, the next one was better, but still needed more flavor. A couple days after that, the one I ate had excellent flavor, but was still too crisp. The next day, the one I tried was too soft -- but I ate the rest of them that day anyway before they got mushier.

I guess I missed the prime pear zone by mere hours.

I sure hope so. It didn't help that they were kept in that hard plastic mold at the store, so I couldn't reall tell their ripeness IN the store. Also, they were cold. Impossible to tell ripeness when the fruit is cold!

i made the big mistake of putting the type of pear i described a few posts back into the fridge. the next day the delightful crunch was gone, it was like soup. i won't be repeating that mistake

I love refrigerated pears, I just have to know which ones to put in there and WHEN to do it. can't chuck them in there the minute I get home from the store-- I'll never know when they're ripe.

Also, I've eaten some prickly pears! They're nicer then normal pears I think.

I used to go to this farm place and ride horses and they had them growing everywhere. You'd rub them in newpaper to get the prickly part off and then tear open the skin for the goodness.

Pears rule. I like them with other fruits and yogurt and granola in the morning. They're good in smoothies too.
