I was just talking to somebody else about this the other day. Would anybody be interested in having another one of these? It's been a while and I figure this time we could just upload our mix instead of mailing them so there would not be any issues with shipping costs or something getting lost in the mail. So, anybody in? And if you have other ideas about it, feel free to list them here.

UPDATE!

I have started to forward links to recipients. Here is a list of all of those participating in the mix exchange. Those who have been forwarded a link to their completed mix will have their names crossed out. So, to make things clear, this is not a list of who has sent but who has received their mix. I will update this post as needed.

I only recommended uploading them because I know with our last mix exchange and with some Secret Santas we have been limited because some people do not want to pay for shipping outside of the country or we've had people who never got them. I figure that way that would make it easier to pair people since they won't be as many limitations.

Also, I've always really liked Out of Time. Even Shiny Happy People and Me in Honey. I have no idea how I would rate Accelerate yet though. Definitely above their last two but I am still letting it wear on me.

Floppy Nono
04-06-2008, 06:56 PM
so how is this going to work, are we going to be paired off or do we just get told a random person from the list and supply them with a mix? Or will we just be submitting all the mixes and you draw names and give them one randomly?

pale blue eyes
04-06-2008, 07:03 PM
I did not want to pair people up. I want it to be sort of like how Secret Santa is; you know who you are making the mix for but the person you are making it for does not know who they will be getting it from. We can decide on a deadline to post them on here or whatever. Are you all alright with not sending a physical disc in the mail? We could maybe agree on a certain number of tracks as a minimum or maximum since there is no disc. I am open to suggestions about pretty much everything though.

Floppy Nono
04-06-2008, 07:05 PM
i think it would be a good idea to limit it to what would fit on a single cd so it could quickly be burned and listened to if desired. i also definitely think it's a better idea to up them than mail them too, it's quicker and more efficient.

pale blue eyes
04-06-2008, 07:08 PM
Yeah, I suppose the minute standard is now eighty with most discs? I don't really see seventy-four minute discs anymore but I do not buy them enough to really pay attention to that stuff anymore.

Floppy Nono
04-06-2008, 07:15 PM

Isn't there a limit of twelve songs or something? It's a neat site but that seems kind of short. Also, that would probably make it more difficult for somebody to download it and then burn it onto a CDR if they wanted to as opposed to just putting it on sendspace or whatever. If the rest of you would prefer to use it then we can do that though.

MrPantyFAce
04-07-2008, 09:03 AM
if its not a physical disc people could just make a .rar file and upload for whoever wanted to download it.

AndySlash
04-07-2008, 11:09 AM
if its not a physical disc people could just make a .rar file and upload for whoever wanted to download it.

The mix still should be made for someone; that's part of the fun of a mix exchange.

So, pbe assigns random partners- person A makes one for person B who makes one for person C and so on... but none of the receivers will know who the sender is until later.

What has worked on other boards' exchanges is this:

pale blue eyes randomly assigns senders to recievers.

pbe PMs senders with their assigned receiver.

Sender makes a mix for their receiver. The mix is uploaded to a sharing site (sendspace, etc)

Sender's PM pbe their upload links (they are NOT sent to the receiver by the sender). Once everyone's mix was in, she would PM each reciever with their sender's mix.

The receiver would listen to the mix, and then at least give a brief review in this thread.

Once the review was in, the sender would identify themselves and post the tracklisting.

If she wants, pbe could monitor who reviews a mix, and then make that mix available for everyone to download in the first post. By the end, everyone's mix would be identified and downloadable from the first post in the thread.

This process seems to work fine on other boards. This being Netphoria, that might be too much for people to handle. But I thought I'd throw it out there.

One other thing to consider- whether or not you want the mix to be a surprise. Do we want to untag all of the files, so that the receiver absolutely does not know what they're getting until the actually listen to it? Or do we leave them tagged?

pale blue eyes
04-07-2008, 11:39 AM
The above seems like a good idea to me. I may be alone on this but I have no idea how to untag mp3s.

Since I am thinking of it: I am assuming most people would prefer mixes to be mp3 format? I know some people are really picky about that sort of thing but as long as I can play it and it's not a .wma file then I really do not care.

Floppy Nono
04-07-2008, 12:02 PM
i hope whoever gets me shares my secret obsession for the Britney Spears song "Lucky"

you could untag your songs manually in your media player program (i don't know how you listen to your music) but im sure theres something out there that could be downloaded to make it more efficient.

spring
04-07-2008, 12:20 PM
you can untag files in winamp - edit info

pale blue eyes
04-07-2008, 07:25 PM
I'm sure I could figure out how to do it in iTunes if I fooled with it.

Floppy Nono
04-07-2008, 07:41 PM
oh itunes is real easy, just right click the song (or drag and highlight many first) then go to get info. From there, just erase everything filled in about the song and hit ok. I would make a copy of each song you want to put on the mix then erase everything about them in terms of tags but add a common album/artist name like netphoria mix or something so they will still show up in the browser (if you use that in itunes) and so you can work with ordering them

I think the main problem we had last time was having people send late or stuff getting lost in the mail so I suggested and we all sort of decided to upload them somewhere. My intention was to make a mix exchange. Like AndySlash said, you can make whatever kind of mix you want but I don't think there is anything wrong with providing some kind of information for the person making your mix. Since people are not assigned to anybody yet, somebody could make a mix of artists that are similar to what their partner likes or just say fuck it and put whatever they want on there. I'm not saying you have to do either but I thought some ideas might be helpful to some people.

Deadeyes
04-09-2008, 12:10 PM
I was asking PBE because it was her/his idea originally and If he/she calls a certain theme then that's all good. I guess the fact that there is multiple ideas about how this can go suggests a collision of interest. If we are all happy to do our own thing and accept something potentially random and not indicative of our tastes then that's cool.

i like the idea of at least trying to tailor the mix to someone's tastes.

may 1st is fine for me.

like: i like stuff that's at least pushing the envelope in some way, though not any way in particular. a certain pop sensibility is important to me though. i like to be able to actually enjoy what i'm listening to.

dislikes: rap. modern country, a good old country song i have no problem with. i tend to gravitate away from instrumentals, but that's not to say i can't enjoy them.

once again, this sounds like a lot of fun, and i can't wait for it.

well, i would like for things to fit one's taste, but at the same time be new to them. for example it might not be a bad idea to glance over their last.fm to get a feel for things and then create something that you think would be similar to their likes, but that also doesn't appear to be heavily listened to.

If whomever you are assigned is alright with giving out their address and you still want to mail it to wherever they live, even if it is in another country then that's fine. It would be nice if you also uploaded it so when everybody's partner is revealed all mixes can be available for anybody to download and sample. I'm pretty sure I said earlier in the thread but PM me the link to your mix and I will PM it to the recipient so they do not know who it came from. Basically what AndySlash outlined before is what I will be doing since that seemed to make sense and if I try to change anything I will somehow get confused and screw things up.

For those who do not know where to start with their partners because they have not posted a last.fm or any kind of preferences - try reading their old posts on this board. Most members participating post in here a lot and you'll be able to find out something about their likes and dislikes. That being said, if you have not posted something about your likes and dislikes and intend to please do so soon.

are we supposed to put obscure shit that people don't know, or just put together a mix of songs that the listener may already own, but its how the songs are tied together thats special?

pale blue eyes
04-14-2008, 09:17 PM
I would definitely say how the songs are tied together is important. You want to make something that sounds good while listening to it all the way through and not choppy like it sounds like you took a bunch of songs from the radio and slapped them onto a disc. It doesn't need to be filled with really obscure shit, just fill it with music you like that you think they might also enjoy. Maybe a couple of songs you love but feel most people might not know or maybe a really good live track. I'm not really sure what to tell you besides to listen to it all the way through before you decide it is done. If you don't like it or find yourself skipping a song or two then you might want to try fooling with it some more.

I have been kind of surprised to get a handful of mixes already. Do you think I should pass them on to their respective recipients now or should I wait until I have all of them in? I figure it might be a good thing to keep the thread busy but on the downside people who are early recipients might listen to their mix and have second thoughts about the one they are making or rush it. What do you all think?

Ok after one listen:

Good mix, flows fairly well quite eclectic which I liked.
Unfamiliar with most bands/artists on this, atleast 6-7 of them have given a good impression straight off, and pretty certain a few of the others I will get into.
Got pretty much what I wanted, mix creator has an interesting varied taste and has not really compromised this to make it more accessible.
Will certainly listen to this more because it flows fairly well, and will look into some of the bands included more extensively.

I will say it's not all favourable to my taste, but that is pretty meaningless given that probably half or more of it will warrant further inspection.

Thanks

a) didn't know any of the songs, cept the nick drake and pixies tracks
b) some of the songs were still quasi tagged - bad form there
c) i liked about 1/3 of it, the other 2/3 was shitty indie music. shout outs to track 13, track 4, track 8 and track 11 for the good try
d) all in all didn't care for most of it, but props for taking the time to put it together whoever did it ('cept for the tracks that were still tagged)

You and I have similar tastes in music, I knew that I probably wasn't going to have too much stuff that you didn't already own, so I thought about interesting ways to present the music. So, for anyone else interested, I went with a Side A and Side B mixtape, Side A I went with electronica and Side B with alt rock/rock stuff

Tracklisting

SIDE A
1. Daft Punk - Human After All
2. Billy Corgan - A100
3. Janet Jackson - If
4. Bjork - Army of Me
5. Depeche Mode - I Feel You
6. New Order - Slow Jam
7. Aaliyah - Try Again

SIDE B
1. The Cure - Burn
2. Jane's Addiction - Three Days
3. Alice in Chains - Queen of the Rodeo (live)
4. Jimmy Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary (live at Monterey)
5. Candlebox - Rain
6. Led Zeppline - No Quarter (live at the Garden)
7. Mazzy Star - Into Dust

I went through many different songs in the mix to try and get it right, I even had some songs that you probably hadn't heard, but they just didn't go well with the other songs, so I ditched them. I am glad you really enjoyed it.

from Junipertots: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y9WD9BYX

Track 01 - Didn't like it that much. It was OK, but nothing I would listen to again.
Track 02 - Tagged as Iron and Wine. I'm a slightly aware of their output, but I did not like most of this song.
Track 03 - Really like this one. Has a nice 80's vibe to it; reminds me a little bit of Genesis' "darker" pop songs.
Track 04 - Song is definitely good; I like the vibe of it. Some parts are eh, but I'd listen to it again. Flows well with track 3.
Track 05 - Tagged as Pink Floyd. Never have heard this song, though, but it's excellent.
Track 06 - Wanted to like, but ended up not.
Track 07 - Tagged as the Spinto Band. It was OK, might check them out more.

Track 08 - Tagged as the Flaming Lips. Kinda familiar with them, but I don't remember having heard this. I like it, though. Definitely flows well with Track 7.

Track 09 - Nice song, but too background-y.
Track 10 - Didn't care too much for this, don't like the dude's voice.

Track 11 - Guessing this is Radiohead...Don't know this song, but I really like it. I like his voice. Is this an Amnesiac B-Side? It strikes me as possible. "I want to eat your artichoke heart"? AWESOME.

Track 12 - Tagged as The Good, the Bad, the Queen. I'm not huge on the dude's voice.
Track 13 - Labeled as Four Tet. I really like this; I've gotten into this type of music in the last year or so, so I will for sure check them out.

Track 14 - YAY! "Blackbird"! I feel really dumb asking this, but maybe it could be that I haven't heard it in a while or the possibility of being an alternate take. Is this a cover?

Track 15 - Labeled as Beach Boys. ahaha, awesome, "Wouldn't It Ne Nice"! I'm more of a fan of their "weirder", un-poppy songs but I do like this one.

Track 16 - Short and sweet; kinda sounded like an early U2 demo or something for some of the song. Haha.
Track 17 - Another short song - sometimes those are the best. I like this.

Track 18 - Third short song. Sounds like a baby radio, all twinkly and piano-y. Nice, but wouldn't have a reason to listen to it again. probably makes a good segeue into whatever albums it's on.

Track 19 - Tagged as Zero 7. Halfway through the short song stretch. This is a simple song, but I like it. Would listen again, but the dude doesn't seem to have a voice I could listen to for a whole album. Which was true when I heard one of their albums.

Track 20 - Cover of "You Are My Sunshine"; ultimately disposable.
Track 21 - Labeled as Keiichi Suzuki. Sounds interesting, is all their music like this?

Track 22 - Labeled as Trail of Dead. I don't really care for them (though they were good in concert 6 years ago). This is different from what I have heard from them, but still don't really like it.

Track 23 - Labeled as Rothko. Sounds like a decent enough singer, but a bit on the forgettable side.

Track 24 - I LOVE THIS SONG!!! IT'S "GREAT ESCAPE" BY MOBY AND AZURE RAY. I used to be so friggin' in love with this song. I have listened to it probably 100+ times since I first heard it 5 years ago. <3 <3

Track 25 - Labeled as Portishead. I don't know how I feel about them, but this song isn't swaying me to the positive side of that dilemma.
Track 26 - Labeled as Modest Mouse. What album is this from? Short and sweet, but I like it! Is this from that Sad Sappy Sucker thing?
Track 27 - Haha, dunno what this 0:16 clip is and I have no idea how to feel about it.

Overall, it flowed pretty well, I just wasn't a fan of most of it. Thank you for the effort, though, it seems like a lot of thought was put into this because of the way it flowed. Points for the Pink Floyd and Radiohead, Extra points for introducing me to Four Tet and Bonus Points for the Moby/Azure Ray song.

actually, i have no musical training and don't have a band. i was home alone one night and that is what came about. it's been around a year or so and i just thought i'd throw it on there... i wanted to close the mix with a sense of confusion rather than resolution.

I liked that you did a song by song review. I uploaded this album with tagged tracks but lost the upload link when I sent it to PBE. She has one though, so i will get that from her so everyone can have a tagged copy if they wish to download it.

Since I just read your PM not too long ago, I'll just post the link:

I know I said earlier that the deadline is on or before May 1st but if you those of you who still need to make theirs could try to get it in by April 30th then that would be great. It ends up I will be traveling on May 1st and would not want somebody to have to wait until the following week to get their mix link forwarded to them. I will probably check email and shit sporadically but I would really appreciate it if I didn't have to.

i really liked my mix. i recognized very few songs, just one by the smiths, billy. ill write a bit.

track 1 is sick. instrumental rock. reminds of es post humus, the techno rock, without the strings. actually i feel like playing quake after this. good opener.

track 2. very nice. jc complex-ish but heavier vocals.

track 3. yeah! this one is absolutely fantastic. lyrics, melodies. id be interested in hearing more from this band.

track 4. thanks for putting in odder shit not just rock. french ? this gives me a noir feeling/setting.

track 5. cool. lets dance in a forest.

track 6. i like how you put this harder one after 2 songs of girls singing. this ones alright, i mostly like the guitar sounds.

track 7. donnie darko shit. pretty cool 80's track.

track 8. smiths. not bad.

track 9. this is some punk some i dn. didnt really like it. the pre-chorus is pretty cool tho.

track 10. chillin.

track 11. interesting, 1 minute long but its telling me to move on and get under the sun. i kinda wish it were a full length.

track 12. short punky song. catchy chorus i wouldnt mind this in the car.

track 13. yeah :) id like to hear more from these.

track 14. organ drones yay... just in time for 4/20.

track 15 soft guitar/piano ballad with this dist. guitar lead on top of most of it doing some nice solo stuff. this one is great.

track 16. i know its sabbath. this is a fun track.

track 17. heads will roll. wicked.

track 18. brings me back. sound garden.

track 19. very cool.

track 20. starts really dreamy then i love how it goes fucken ballistic at the end.

track 21. this is ok. would be better if a band kicked in.

track 22. pulcezar. haha good pick to close. nothing more familiar than that voice.

i think mine is from D. im going to listen straight through and give my observation as it plays

track 1- awesome opener for the mix. starts off pretty simple, builds up in volume then dies down gracefully. short and sweet
track 2- brian wilson would be proud. dig it
track 3- corrupt file :(
track 4- band of horses is it? this song is pretty if not repetative. not my thing but i dont hate it
track 5- okkervil river. gotta love austin bands. i dig it. hey wait... im from austin.. arent you from kansas city, D? coincidence? I THINK NOT. i like this song a lot
track 6- this sounds really familiar, but i cant place why. sounds like another beach boys song. or something that i sang when i was in kindergarten. dig it again
track 7- is this mates of state? the first time i heard them i was stoned out of my mind in paris on tour with dexter freebish. somebody we were touring with was obsessed with this band. this makes me wish i was high right now. total mind fuck with the split vox. arent they from kansas, too?
track 8- cool song for the most part. i dont like the vox at all. they remind me of blink 182 for some reason, but less sucky. i think these guys were on speed when they mixed this song. its all over the place. i would like to hear a lossless version just to hear what those chimes sound like. i can dig it
track 9- im not a big white strips fan, though i can appreciate them. i hate the cher autotune trick.
track 10- genesis? sounds different than i remember, maybe is the mp3. not a fan of there's, but this is a trippy song.
track 11- haha c&c! rawk
track 12- this song would be killer for some final fantasy credits. doesn't really take me anywhere and is kind of generic but i like it
track 13- blah. repetative, sappy. it made me want to listen to genesis again. generic
track 14- cool track. more interesting than the last track.
track 15- broken afternoon is a cool track. one of my friends digs these guys. sounds like a mix of don mclean and rodney crowell. i'll dig it more when i'm in the right mood.
track 16- very cool version of this old song. reminds me of stuff my parents played to me when i was a kid.
track 17- is this helio sequence again? sounds familiar. this time they sound like tom waits

good mix. definitely more mood music to me, but there isnt anything on here that i won't listen to again. the flow got a little stagnant towards the end. some of the songs kind of sounded the same which made for long periods without change.

nice job

dig it

02. Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk - 3
03. Jenny Hoylston and William Whitmore - The First of a Thousand Beasts
04. Band of Horses - Marry Song
05. Okervvil River - Kansas City
06. Animal Collective - Derek
07. Mates of State - Punchlines
08. Cloud Cult - Take Your Medicine
09. White Stripes - You're Pretty Good Looking For A Girl (Trendy American Remix)
10. Genesis - The Lady Lies
11. Coheed and Cambria - The Road and the Damned
12. Bluescreen - Blue
13. Airiel - Kiss Me Sadly
14. Panda Riot - Olivia On the Downbeat
15. Helio Sequence - Broken Afternoon
16. Secret Machines - Girl From the North Country (Bob Dylan cover)

i really don't want to do a track by track review cause that'd be tedious, and i don't remember the order, really.

as a whole, i liked the cd enough, although i'm not much of a "song" person lately. although musicianship on some of the tracks was impressive. i did happen to find track 9 extremely annoying, though. why would you transpose the shitty power chords you play on your guitar to a string quartet. that's all i heard. track 13 was amusing. my mom once knew a guy in miami who found a square grouper in the bay and lived rather comfortably for about a year without having to work.

this review sucks, but i want to know who it is. i'm guessing waltermcphilp.

i made the mix. here's the tracklisting with some info on why i put them on the mix.

1. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - All Around You (Intro)
i thought this was the perfect intro track for a mix of this sort.

2. Modest Mouse - Teeth Like God's Shoeshine
my favorite song by these guys. i though about including Doin' In The Cockroach instead but i opted for this one.

3. Jeffrey Lewis - Alphabet
i love Jeffrey Lewis and i think this is a beautiful song with some of my favorite lyrics.

4. George Harrison - Apple Scruffs
my favorite song from All Thing Must Pass. i've never really heard anyone talk about it, so i don't know how well known it is. it's about the people that used to hang outside of Apple Studios or whatever back in the day.

5. David Bowie - Take My Tip
i'm a huge David Bowie fan and i don't think enough people have heard is pre-album stuff from '64-'67. this is one of my favorites from the era.

6. Streetlight Manifesto - Point/Counterpoint
you didn't post a last.fm account or any likes/dislikes so i looked through some old posts of yours and i saw that you'd made a thread wanting people to suggest some ska. i don't know a lot of ska, but no one i've heard does it like Streetlight and i love these guys. the way they do the horns, i fucking love the drumming, and i dig the guys voice. so i just picked some song off their first album.

7. The Zutons - Valarie
i love The Zutons and i they're pretty much unknown here in the states. this is one of my favorites from their last album. the chorus is soooo good. the have a new album coming out soon.

8. Propagandhi - Back To The Motor League
this is my favorite punk song.

9. Matson Jones - New York City Fuck Off
this was a band from where i used to live (fort collins, co). i thought they were pretty unique. sorry you didn't dig on it. two chicks with cellos and a drummer.

10. Marcy Playground - John Fisher Ford
this is a song by Marcy Playground from Zog Bog Bean, the album they released independently before their self-titled album that had Sex And Candy on it. i just dig it and think it's a neat little tune about drugs and what they can do to some people.

11. The Verve - Catching The Butterfly
The Verve's Urban Hymns is one of my all time favorite albums, so i thought i'd ******* a track from it. it could've been any track from that album on here. i pretty much picked it by random.

12. Of Montreal - So Begins Our Alabee
this song makes me happier than any other song on the planet. the "oh-uh-oh-oh" in the chorus is what makes it for me.

13. Reverend Horton Heat - Bales Of Cocaine
the Rev is great drinkin' music. you should check out his best of Holy Roller. it's a great introductory disc. i almost included Marijuana (very similar feel to the almost instrumental "Tequila") but decided something with more words would be more enjoyable.

14. The Dandy Warhols - Get Off
this is my favorite Dandy Warhols song. they have a new album coming out on 5/5. if you liked this track maybe you'll like the new album.

15. !!! - Storm The Legion
these guys' guitar work always reminds me of Talking Heads. this is a cool song, so i threw it on there.

16. Grandaddy - Broken Household Appliance National Forest
this is from my favorite Grandaddy album, The Sophtware Slump. it always makes me think of the world Tyler Durden describes in Fight Club before he disappears. the book paints a better picture of that world though.

17. Apartment - Tokyo For Miko
this a british band that i fucking love and i don't think anyone really knows about. this is my favorite from their album The Dreamer Evasive. the chorus kills! really fun song, imo.

18. Harvey Danger - War Buddies
Harvey Danger was a one hit wonder in the 90's, but they put out an album called Little By Little a year or two ago. as far as i know they were the first band to actually release their album for free online and it always burns me that they aren't recognized for this more often. this one of my favorite from that album.

19. Michael Penn - Small Black Box
Michael Penn is Sean Penn's brother. i don't think many people no him outside of maybe his one semi-hit in 1989, No Myth. this is from his 1997 album Resigned. he's an amazing lyricist and i wish more people would hear him.

20. ? & The Mysterians - 96 Tears
there was a point in time that this was my favorite song. gotta love the organ. everyone needs to be familiar with this classic.

i was pretty bummed with your review. i was hoping for a bit more. i was really excited to make this mix for you. i hope you at least find a song on it you didn't know, but liked, and maybe look more into that artist. then you won't have to worry about just a song, but be able to listen to a whole album.

A Review:

Mix title: Now That's What I Call A Netphorian Mix Exchange

This disc is all right. I don't really find myself craving any of these songs after a few listens, but at the same time I wouldn't mind having it on in the background. There wasn't anything that was a total turnoff so, in the very least, it's a pretty accessible and unoffensive mix.

1. An acoustic cover of the Beatles' 'Golden Slumbers'. Pretty straightforward cover, really, so I can't say much about it. Not bad.

2. The chorus kind of reminds me of the chorus of a song from the band Unified Theory (a pseudo-successor to Blind Melon). I dunno, this sounds like some generic indie rock radio stuff here.

3. Ditto. I mean, these aren't bad at all, but it just seems I've heard it already.

4. Whoever sings this does a pretty good job of sounding both sad and angered at the same time. Fits with the music. I kinda like this one.

5. So emo. Much like the term emo itself these days, this more fairly generic stuff.

6. "We can both be naked now and innocent." Who wants to do that?

7. My Morning Jacket- O Is The One That Is Real: I always meant to get the studio version of this song. So thanks for saving me some time. This is one of those songs I've liked since the first time I heard it.

8. "Life was perfectly sad. It's sadder now". Now with more emo! I'd probably have loved all of these when I was 17, though. I would have entered the lyrics onto my TI-82 calculator and looked at them incessantly after my girlfriends would break up with me.

9. An instrumental track. Doesn't really seem to go anywhere, though. I kinda feel like I should know who this is.

10. I liked this one. Catchier the more I listened to it.

11. Of all the PJ Harvey songs to cover, someone did 'The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore'? It's not bad, though. This made me realize I haven't listened to Stories From The City... in a long time. I should pull that out.

12. Meh. Not a bad "meh", but just... meh.

13. The heaviest song so far on here. Doesn't do much for me, though. I like the bass sound.

14. A more urgent sounding cover of 'State Trooper'. Not sure I dig the guy's voice that much though.

15. clapclap...clap...clapclap...clap.

16. By this point, a lot of the songs have been fairly similar. Being an active listener for this review I'm kind of bored at this point. Like I said earlier, this wouldn't be bad to have on in the background, where I'm not forced to pay attention.

17. The chick singer on this track sounds like the gal from Lacuna Coil. I dunno... the kinda sounds like an amalgamation of Tool and Linkin Park. I'm not too big on it.

18. Eh. Probably one of the ones I least enjoyed.

19. Pelican? If not, I don't know who. Decent.

20. A Silversun Pickups song I don't remember the name of. Unlike many here, I do enjoy these guys.

So, yeah... separating my feelings on the songs themselves, I think the mix flows pretty well. It's never jarring or takes you out of the element.

I've a feeling there are a couple other people here who would enjoy this more than I would, so don't take my rather indifferent opinion of its content as a knock.

Yeah, can't think of much else to say.

The CD title was me being retarded ;D

:o This mix definitely had a mellow feel to it. I wanted to put some of my current favs on it, while try to keep it flowing well and keeping the artists varied (somewhat). Contrary to my earlier post, i didn't in<gh>clude any "punk" (take that as you will) rock, sans Bad Religion.

Anyways, here's the list:

1. Jorge Lopez - Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight (This is my buddy from Los Angeles. It didn't fit on here, but i wanted it in the mix, so i just threw it in the beginning)
2. First Wave Hello - Everything Automatic
3. Minus The Bear - Knights
4. Dustin Kensrue - I Knew You Before
5. Statistics - Nobody Knows Your Name
6. The Appleseed Cast - Ice Heavy Branches
7. My Morning Jacket - O Is the One That Is Real
8. Local H - The Summer of Boats
9. Kinski - Semaphore
10. These Arms Are Snakes - Angela's Secret
11. Desert Sessions - The Whores Hustle or The Hustler's Whore
12. Band of Horses - The Funeral
13. Cave In - Screaming In Your Sleep
14. Dustin Kensrue - State Trooper (Live, Acoustic)
15. Nada Surf - Everyone's On Tour
16. Bad Religion - Dearly Beloved (I had to throw some BR on this =) )
17. Feersum Ennjin - Dragon (one of Paul D'Amour of Tool's projects)
18. Junius - From The Isle of The Blessed
19. Thrice - Night Diving
20. Silversun Pickups - Comeback Kid

REMINDER

I have only gotten about half the mixes and the deadline is this coming Thursday. Please try to have them to me by Wednesday or at least early Thursday morning as I will be traveling. Like I said before, I will have limited access to a PC but I would rather not spend a lot of time on here if I can avoid it.

Also: Please, DO NOT under any circumstances contact your partner directly until after the exchange is over and they have reviewed your mix or whatever. If you have questions or concerns about ANYTHING, and it's not just a general question that can be answered in this thread, PM ONLY ME. I thought I had made this clear but apparently I did not. Allow me to do so: DO NOT CONTACT YOUR PARTNER. AT ALL. CONTACT ME INSTEAD.

This mix definitely had a mellow feel to it.

It did. It was nice how it kind of got progressively louder as it went on.

1. Jorge Lopez - Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight (This is my buddy from Los Angeles. It didn't fit on here, but i wanted it in the mix, so i just threw it in the beginning)

For a straightforward cover, it's pretty good.

8. Local H - The Summer of Boats

This is Local H? Really? I'm obviously not that familiar with them, but this still would not be what I'd think a Local H song would sound like?

10. These Arms Are Snakes - Angela's Secret

I like this one the more I listen to it.

11. Desert Sessions - The Whores Hustle or The Hustler's Whore

Still a seemingly bizarre choice for a cover.

Well, thanks for this. Sorry I'm not more into it... most of it was stuff I'd not heard or probably wouldn't seek out on my own, so at least I heard stuff I normally wouldn't have.

Track 01: This is Spoon. I think this is off of their latest album, which, admittedly, I have not listened to all that much. I like this song though and it's a nice opener.

Track 02: I have no idea who this is. I like the song up until about the last minute or so. I thought that a new song has started and it was like they just ran out of ideas of how to end the song.

Track 03: This song reminds me of modern rock radio in 1997. There were a bunch of bands who had weird sort of singles that were, I don't know, pseudo trip-hop? Like Sneaker Pimps and Primitive Radio Gods. I'm not sure what you would call it but it reminds of that. I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's not bad but not something I would go out and buy.

Track 04: Elliott Smith! This song is off of one of his posthumous albums. I am sure I could look in iTunes and find it but you can save me the effort. I like it, but I always have a bittersweet feeling after listening to his stuff anymore. :/

Track 05: This is The Frames' "Revelate" from their live album. I just sort of got into them after playing the Glen Hansard / Marketa Irglova album for about a month straight even before I saw the movie Once. Seemed to fit nicely here even though it opened on the other album.

Track 06: This is The Killers. I only really like one song of theirs ("Read My Mind") and I mentally file it in the guilty pleasure category. This song is alright but it just doesn't grab me.

Track 07: The vocalist sounds really, really familiar but I am just too tired to try to figure out who he is. I feel like I should know who he is but whatever. I like the song all right but am irked by I spent most of it trying to figure out who they were.

Track 08: This just sounds like generic electronica to me. I got through about two minutes of it but after that I just skipped the rest.

Track 09: This reminds me a bit of Fugazi, only if they were British and singing about a girl. I got kind of sick of it by the end though.

Track 10: No idea who this is. Not bad, I'd probably have to hear more by them though. I like the dual vocalists but, yeah, I'm not sure.

Track 11: I really like this song. It sounds older and is sort of sappy, so that's probably why. That's all I got.

Track 12: This is a cover of Elliott Smith's "Christian Brothers" but I have no idea who the artist / band covering it is. Not bad, but nothing spectacular. It seems like it might be hard to cover one of his songs and make it your own though.

Track 13: I really do not like this song. I'm not sure if it is the vocalist or what but I just do not like it.

Track 14: I'm not sure what to think of this song. I was sort of tricked into thinking it was an instrumental but then bam! Vocals! Alright but probably nothing I would listen to by itself again. Might work better on the album or something.

Track 15: This sounds familiar too but I have no idea who it is. I am sort of tired though.

Track 16: MGMT. I just downloaded this album about a month or so and really like it so far. Must be the hand claps. Not sure if I will still like it in another few months or will get sick of it but right now Erin approves.

Track 17: I am fairly certain this is Modest Mouse, a band who I never really got into. This song is like two years long but since I did not skip to the end I suppose that is a good thing.

Track 18: Pearl Jam - "Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town". There are a few Pearl Jam songs that, due to my brother's Pearl Jam obsession and subsequent playing of bootleg after bootleg of theirs, I cannot really listen to anymore. This is one of them.

Track 19: I have no idea who this is, but I really like the song. The vocals remind me of....Hum? I don't know. They remind me of somebody.

Pretty good. Flowed pretty well and I liked the majority of it enough to at the very least not skip over it. I am really curious to see a track list though.

my review.. i will edit it tomorrow too, but this is just the first listen

I accidentally listened to track 10 after track 1, because winamp ordered them 'alphabetically', but anyway, I noticed the mistake, rearranged them and now i'm starting it again.

Track 1: very sweet and funny, no idea who this is, but it really made me smile

Track 2: this sounds like a cover, but listening to the lyrics more i think it's an original song, sounding like it's written in the 60s, but probably more recent than that. i like it.

Track 3: oh, his voice sounds very familiar. i've definitely heard it before, but i can't quite place it. i really like the 'hook' around the 1:30 mark :)

Track 4: neil young - piece of crap? haha..awesome

Track 5: another familiar voice, or maybe not. the twangy/bluesy guitars (+harmonica) are great and so is the beat.

Track 6: i love this song (once in a lifetime) :) and i think this live version is actually better than the one on the record. i don't know why i never listen to the talking heads more..

Track 7: very cool song. i don't know why my first thought was "how unexpected", but it fits very well within the mix. major shredding action

Track 8: 13:57 - i'm wondering if this is mogwai or explosions. i guess i might as well find out. nope...it's less recent guitar gods. yes, this definitely fits better in the sequence of songs. and it feels like i should turn off the lights to enjoy this even more. very much up my alley :) i'm wondering if a certain _isgod made this mix.
the change in tempo at the 7 minute mark is just perfect and i also like the experimental sounding stuff that follows. up until the 9 minute mark; not so much into those sounds. but at least i'm not skipping to the next track.

Track 9: this guys really likes johnny. and i like his song too. makes me think of that johnny cash song about building a car one part at a time. makes me smile.

Track 10: i know this song from the juno soundtrack :) love it.

Track 11: i love her voice, i'm thinking i should recognize it from somewhere. but i definitely haven't head this song before. the glockenspiel (if that's what that is) is very pretty

Track 12: very sweet :) including the sappy orchestration... wait! is this michael jackson? it reminds me very much of harry nilsson.

Track 13: great idea to end with an instrumental track. i also really liked the gradual slow down at the end of the mix.

I really enjoyed listening to the mix. thank you for making it and i'd love to see the track listing too. i think i'm going to burn it on a cd and listen to it in my car sometimes. and i'll definitely give it a few more listens soon and come back and edit this.
