View Full Version : XP Tweaks
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 07:48 PM if you go to run in the start menu and type regedit
it will present you with the windows registry explorer
on the left there will be a sidebar
here there are five folders
open HKEY_CURRENT_USER
then Microsoft
and finally Windows --> CurrentVersion
click on the folder Internet Settings
now if you look to the right there is the panel right? with lots of blue and red files which make no sense
you want to right click in this area
and make a new DWORD
name this DWORD --> MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
(exactly how I have spelt it - caps wise)
set it to --> a
in the panel the new DWORD should be 0x0000000a (10)
now make another DWORD and call it --> MaxConnectionsPerServer
and also make it's value --> a (0x0000000a (10))
this will make (at least ie) ALOT faster
basically the default for these DWORD's is 4
if you imagine a pipe with water running through it the wider it is the more water can pass through it
but if it's too big -- it could not run (or very slowly anyway - you get the point!)
that's what this does .. it gives you more connections to any one server so you can recieve information faster because it's in smaller pieces..
phew :)
PeppermintHippo 03-22-2008, 07:51 PM hey thanks!
:)
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 07:58 PM next -->
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
and then Control Panel
click on the folder Desktop
there should be a red box called --> HungAppTimeout
double click it and set to --> 2000
(this will make your programs close more quickly)
there is another one called --> WaitToKillAppTimeout
set this to --> 5000
(this will make windows shut down faster)
basically the defaults are set at a really stupidly high level just in case someone has a really reaaally slow computer
these levels I have set are safe
in fact you can set them both at 2000 tbh!
sppunk 03-22-2008, 08:50 PM How about you credit someone you fucking cocksucker?
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/winxp.htm
TheMilstead 03-22-2008, 09:04 PM japanalex is cocksucker
and barfed in the tin
we noticed he looked like Bob Barker
his feeble grin drips like a blood-streak down his chin
TheMilstead 03-22-2008, 09:04 PM japanalex is ballsack
While Janie turns thumbscrews and fondles his chain
Christ, is that a knife in my back?
The sun sparkles, and sprinkles not the rain

i worked with microsoft a few years ago
I have many friends who work in microsoft
what makes you think i stole this information?
and also -- who cares? I'm helping you
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 09:14 PM you guys are just bored
why don't you pick on someone your own size?
i.e. no of posts!
p.s i work in the I.T industry and I know alot more than just tweaks so hit me up anyone who is actually interested!
haveyouforgotte 03-22-2008, 09:18 PM do you have anything that will let me minimize warcraft faster?
Starla 03-22-2008, 09:28 PM p.s i work in the I.T industry and I know alot more than just tweaks so hit me up anyone who is actually interested!
Tell me how to completely erase vista and replace it with XP without destroying my computer. I fucking hate vista. It also glitches and gives me black screens.
I'm going back to an osx when this one dies.
dean_r_koontz 03-22-2008, 09:29 PM it's highly unlikely that anyone could find out this information from any other scource than the internet. give credit to the people who deserves it or leave the board.
Starla 03-22-2008, 09:32 PM I also have a dead computer in the closet. The power pack went out and it took the mother board with it. I wish I could just fix it myself. I lost alot of pictures and music because I didn't back up :( :(

i guess you could rent an external hard-drive and move everything onto that?
the only way to (safely) switch OS' is two wipe everything -- because everything in the computer is affected - the registry is one of the most important issues with this..
there is an especially large gap between changes made in XP and Vista - XP and 2000 are relatively similar (I know you didn't ask! haha)
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 09:48 PM I also have a dead computer in the closet. The power pack went out and it took the mother board with it. I wish I could just fix it myself. I lost alot of pictures and music because I didn't back up :( :(
what hard-drive was in it? you could put it in another pc!
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 09:50 PM it's highly unlikely that anyone could find out this information from any other scource than the internet. give credit to the people who deserves it or leave the board.
well the arguement for that is - where did they find the information from?
I'm sorry but mostly everything I know I have learnt from friends in the business
I'm sorry to .. disappoint you..?
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 09:50 PM do you have anything that will let me minimize warcraft faster?
overclocking
Starla 03-22-2008, 10:11 PM what hard-drive was in it? you could put it in another pc!
on c... I just want to grab the info off of it. I hope it's still there.
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:21 PM you can take it out and swap it for one in another computer
Richard III 03-22-2008, 10:26 PM it's highly unlikely that anyone could find out this information from any other scource than the internet. give credit to the people who deserves it or leave the board.
That's a bit of a stupid argument.
Richard III 03-22-2008, 10:27 PM JapanAlex are these things ok to do on my 1GHz Pentium 3 with 512MB RAM?
TheMilstead 03-22-2008, 10:28 PM That's a bit of a stupid argument.
richard the third, you are quite the turd

Marvellous.
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:33 PM JapanAlex are these things ok to do on my 1GHz Pentium 3 with 512MB RAM?
yes! i mean i wouldn't apply tweaks to a machine with 64mb of ram - but seeing as how most machines around now have over 256mb -- i.e yeah it's safe!
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:36 PM also there is a tweak about getting the most out of your internet connection
I may post about this but there is a site here which is pretty good at explaining things and the guy in the forum will answer any threads in like and hour! lol he must have no life but he's nice..
www.speedguide.net
basically everything on the internet is sent, from the website to your computer, in "packets"
a packet is like a bag full of website goodies (ie pictures, flash, html etc)
the default XP packet size is something like 546? I think.. hmm
anyway -- the packet size is called the "MTU"
in the same registry explorer i talked about above you can change the size of the "MTU"
this will allow larger bags of goodies to be sent to your computer - thus faster downloads/uploads/surfing!
xyumachine 03-22-2008, 10:36 PM I want to system recover my laptop to factory installation, but when my computer restarts to open the application, it doesn't read the recovery disc and opens up windows xp instead. I have used it once before, so I know the disc worked.
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 10:36 PM on c... I just want to grab the info off of it. I hope it's still there.
was this a laptop?
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 10:37 PM I want to system recover my laptop to factory installation, but when my computer restarts to open the application, it doesn't read the recovery disc and opens up windows xp instead. I have used it once before, so I know the disc worked.
did you set it to boot from cd before the hard drive in the bios?
xyumachine 03-22-2008, 10:44 PM did you set it to boot from cd before the hard drive in the bios?
how do you do this?
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:45 PM press F2 at startup
then go to --> boot
change the boot sequence to CD
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 10:46 PM well you access the bios by pressing a button on start up. usually you see a screen when you first turn on the pc that says press Fsomething for a bunch of options. One of the options should be for the bios.
Are you using a store bought pc? what is the model number, i can try to look up what button you would specifically press.
TheMilstead 03-22-2008, 10:48 PM Yeah, it's not always F2 as japanalex suggests. For example, mine is the Delete key. But your computer will tell you right when you boot.
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:49 PM try F2 F5 F8
TheMilstead 03-22-2008, 10:50 PM GOSHDARNIT JAPANALEX IT'S NOT ALWAYS A FUNCTION KEY
xyumachine 03-22-2008, 10:51 PM okay, I'll try that when I get home.
Are you using a store bought pc? what is the model number, i can try to look up what button you would specifically press.
Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 10:52 PM also, it's not a good idea to just press random function keys until you get the right one because they might be mapped to do something else that you have no idea of.
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:54 PM GOSHDARNIT JAPANALEX IT'S NOT ALWAYS A FUNCTION KEY
oh chill out!
it's gonna be either F2 , F5 , F8, F10, F12 or the delete key
just google your PC brand (eg dell etc)
google search: dell bios key
you get it i'm sure :banging:
JapanAlex 03-22-2008, 10:55 PM esc key is for toshiba's
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 11:07 PM i found a post that says you can access the boot menu by pressing F12 on the model you have, xyumachine. I can't find a specific site for the bios itself but i think you could boot the cd from the boot menu option. I'm not totally sure. Check when you turn the computer on at the first screen you see, it should tell you the options you have in small font on the screen.
Floppy Nono 03-22-2008, 11:11 PM oh, i found this thread.
http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/laptops/bios-key-toshiba-satelite-5205-series-30003.html
Toshiba Notebook [Newer models]
1. Turn on computer by Holding down power button while pressing the ESC key.
The machine will beep, then display:
Check System, then press [F1] key.
2. Release ESC key
3. Press F1 key
xyumachine 03-22-2008, 11:27 PM thanks for the help Floppy Nono. I will give this a try later today.
Starla 03-23-2008, 04:41 AM was this a laptop?
nope.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 04:43 AM even easier, do what japanalex said and take it out and put it in another computer.
Or, you could buy a usb enclosure and turn it into an external hard drive!
Starla 03-23-2008, 04:46 AM Or, you could buy a usb enclosure and turn it into an external hard drive.
I would rather do this. Now I have to know how to do it.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 04:49 AM they're pretty easy to do for the most part. You just attach the given adapter to the end of the hard drive once you take it out of the computer and slip it into a shell and close that bad boy up! I don't know if you'd have to mount it with screws inside the enclosure, i've never had one like that but i suppose it's possible that it exists. I did this with an old 2.5 (laptop size) hard drive and made myself a nice little pocket usb drive out of it in minutes. For a desktop pc it would most likely be a 3.5 enclosure you'd need.
Starla 03-23-2008, 04:53 AM Ok, I can do this. I'm hoping nothing was damaged on the HD when the power pack blew. It's a crappy comp and they quoted me around $400 to fix it completely.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 04:57 AM lol for that much you'd have been better off saving up a bit to buy a lower end pc superior to that one ( i assume it's rather old). Technology sucks in general anyway, i wish netphoria was just a bunch of cave paintings.
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:07 AM I wonder what an emo girl would look like when scribbled on a cave wall...
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:07 AM Better yet, in this life you need a time machine.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:13 AM no way, you just need a rewind button!
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:15 AM Wish I had a fackin' rewind button... *grumbles*
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:16 AM me too, nick, me too
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:18 AM Let's make out.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:21 AM ok but i warn you, i'm probably going to cry afterward and put lyrics to fall out boy song in my away message
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:25 AM Sounds good. I'll go with The Promise Ring.
Ready.... GO!
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:28 AM
When I wake up,
I'm willing to take my chances
On the hope you hate him more than you notice I wrote this for you.
( For you so)
You need him.
I could be him....
I could be an accident but I'm still trying.
That's more than I can say for him.
Where is your boy tonight?
I hope he is a gentleman.
Maybe he won't find out what I know:
You were the last good thing about this part of town.
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:29 AM :hanging:
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:30 AM i suddenly find myself playing and humming that song Hey Leonardo (she likes me for me) and i don't know why...
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:34 AM We need to get a list going of all these embarrassing bands.
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:35 AM they'll all come from me, i've been on a reliving bad 90's music kick. Last night i listened to s club 7 and i kind of liked it. But only their first album, not the 2nd one where they went all balladish
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:39 AM Oh wow, S club 7. I was willing to go as far as TBS, but man... that's really in there. That's like... beyond All-4-One and Simple Plan. I completely forgot they existed. In this life if I had a time machine I'd probably stab a few of these bands' founding members early on in their lives tbh.
Future Boy 03-23-2008, 05:39 AM Ok, I can do this. I'm hoping nothing was damaged on the HD when the power pack blew. It's a crappy comp and they quoted me around $400 to fix it completely.
you can get some cheap enclosers at newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=92&name=External-Enclosures) you need to know what type of HD it was though
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:42 AM Oh wow, S club 7. I was willing to go as far as TBS, but man... that's really in there. That's like... beyond All-4-One and Simple Plan. I completely forgot they existed. In this life if I had a time machine I'd probably stab a few of these bands' founding members early on in their lives tbh.
i remember watching the tv show about them on Fox Family after school at like 5 pm, it was a sad period in my life when i look back on it.
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:44 AM :(
So why are you up so late? On a bad sleep schedule or is Easter just that exciting?
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:47 AM bad sleep schedule, its my spring break this week and i don't feel like sleeping much i guess. party on!
duovamp 03-23-2008, 05:51 AM Spring break, woo!
Floppy Nono 03-23-2008, 05:51 AM aww yeah, i'm getting down with my bad 90's loving self!!
dean_r_koontz 03-23-2008, 06:19 AM japanalex is trying to take a place in this community that is already taken by deviousj (who is now on vacation) by being helpful and knowledgeable about computers (not really because it's stolen information). stay put and lee will take care of all your computer problems.

I had the same problem with Vista, ended up reformatting and reinstalling XP... what a piece of shit it is.

how am I trying to take a place? haha it sounds like im some sort of plant!
leave me alooone lol all i wanted to do was have some fun with some random people who didn't care about anything they said
but obviously you do have feelings.. (cute lol)
in real life i have to be all serious n all
anyways -- im gonna post a patch which you can merge into your registry
the patch will contain XP tweaks which are safe not all the ones which are bullshit
like "large system cache"
oh and deany -- i never said i was a computer whizz -- but i have been making PC's for several years (around 12)
and i have about as much knowledge on PC's as any microsft employee
and if i don't? all i need to do is call my friends who WORK THERE!
Fonzie 03-24-2008, 12:09 AM fuck
because of your tips, my pc won't boot.
JapanAlex 03-24-2008, 12:21 AM fuck

lol what computer are you on now??
Future Boy 03-27-2008, 04:08 AM lets just assume yes
Future Boy 03-27-2008, 04:13 AM Ive never known JapanAlex to lie.
JapanAlex 03-27-2008, 06:24 AM well why would i lie?
*evil cackle*
ps. cackle comes from the pumpkin
Richard III 03-27-2008, 07:43 AM I tried the tweaks and my PC works fine.
JokeyLoki 03-27-2008, 07:55 AM I used most of them, and mine works fine...
dean_r_koontz 03-27-2008, 08:36 AM my computer just stopped working after i implemented the advices. it says "internal terminal error" on the screen. well done japanalex.
JapanAlex 03-27-2008, 11:19 AM lol
well all i can say dean is that you must have typed an EXACT different VALID name
and put in a value which would cause an error! the registry is dangerous if you do that ... but you can't be that stupid... can you?
ps. I know you're just trolling -- but if something has seriously happened -- tell me what happens at boot and I'll help you fix it
JapanAlex 03-27-2008, 11:39 AM well here is another internet speed trick -
press ctrl & R and type "regedit"
open and browse left-hand column
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Services
Tcpip
Parameters
****
Ok, let's add some new DWORD's in here ok! So right click and create new value
here are the names of the DWORD's you want to create:
1. EnablePMTUBHDetect -- set this to "0"
2. EnablePMTUDiscovery -- set this to "1"
3. Tcp1323Opts -- set this to "1"
4. TcpMaxDupAcks -- set this to "2"
5. SackOpts -- set this to "1"
ok :) now there are two more you need to create -- these are very important -- they will give you the maximum speed your internet provider (and windows!) is holding back on
you will have to add these two value's -- but wait till i've finished cos they are different for everyone
1. GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize
2. TcpWindowSize
you will need to check your internet speed for me okay and we can work together to get the best speed for you!
basically i said before about how the internet is like a pipeline and if you widen it you can let more through..
this is correct - but he's the more detailed version-
if the above two DWORD's are too small (for the provided speed) then you will not get your full speed
if it's two large your computer will loose packets of information from the server it is downloading from when you run a webpage
there is also a distance factor between you and any server you download from (different countries more distance)
JapanAlex 03-27-2008, 11:42 AM okay PHEW!
so tell me your internet speed
is it 10Mbps? or whatever
just hover over the little internet sign in the taskbar
Nimrod's Son 03-27-2008, 01:04 PM Here's the only tweak you'll need... XP loads explorer into active memory whether or not you're using it. To stop that from happening and gain more active memory as well as reduce crashing:

Not really.
Gish08 03-28-2008, 08:51 PM Vista sucks. If they don't get it fixed it's going to be the next Windows ME. SP1 apparently didn't do much.

and no disabling explorer.exe is pointless
i know im in a forum with teenagers so i have to understand that a few of you are obnoxious
JapanAlex 03-29-2008, 02:49 AM It's one optional GUI. Windows still loads fine and faster using the tweak I posted.
Don't listen to this JapanAlex guy he knows just enough to be dangerous
windows does not load fine
if you do not know the process names of everything you want to use on your computer you are fucked
so again, its mega stupid
ps. i know what you mean when you say "fine" but you are not understanding that the average user will not see that as "fine"

Starla 03-29-2008, 06:31 AM I had the same problem with Vista, ended up reformatting and reinstalling XP... what a piece of shit it is.
When you reinstalled xp, did it try to update you to the evil win 2 service pack?
JapanAlex 03-29-2008, 07:17 AM i have the new service pack 3
i can't get automatic updates cos the service makes my cpu usage skyrocket to 100% everytime i switch on the pc
yeah.. i should probably get round to fixing that!
Richard III - thanks lol (jee shucks :D) but i'm no IT pro - i just have learnt alot from IT pros
if they don't want to take my advice (cos their so damn clever) then who cares? it's an open invitation -
I just don't like assholes! nigg nugedy nigg nagg please
Starla 03-29-2008, 07:38 AM The last update I downloaded for vista crashed my multi media keyboard driver. These updates do nothing but cause major fail.
hastduvergessen 03-29-2008, 02:32 PM windows does not load fine

JokeyLoki 03-29-2008, 04:17 PM so is there a single xp tweak listed in this thread that hasn't fucked up at least one person's computer?
I did <a href="http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm">these</a>, and when I got to Services, I changed them to what was in the "Safe" column. Worked out fine.
JapanAlex 03-29-2008, 09:04 PM ok have your fun! :)
whatever you want!
they haven't done anything to anyone's computer - these are valid tweaks which many people know about
i was just trying to inform you - if you didn't already know
obviously noone cares about having a faster more effiecient windows and faster internet WITH FASTER DOWNLOADING FOR MUUUUSIIIIIIC?
jesus christ people are fucking pussies
JapanAlex 03-29-2008, 09:07 PM a noob
you obviously haven't tried this then
you need to know the process names of everything
including internet
so unless you write does everything before you apply this you can't do anything
its stupid and so are you
i know you're just having fun now aren't you..
