if you go to run in the start menu and type regedit

it will present you with the windows registry explorer

on the left there will be a sidebar

here there are five folders

open HKEY_CURRENT_USER

then Microsoft

and finally Windows --> CurrentVersion

click on the folder Internet Settings

now if you look to the right there is the panel right? with lots of blue and red files which make no sense

you want to right click in this area

and make a new DWORD

name this DWORD --> MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

(exactly how I have spelt it - caps wise)

set it to --> a

in the panel the new DWORD should be 0x0000000a (10)

now make another DWORD and call it --> MaxConnectionsPerServer

and also make it's value --> a (0x0000000a (10))

this will make (at least ie) ALOT faster

basically the default for these DWORD's is 4

if you imagine a pipe with water running through it the wider it is the more water can pass through it

but if it's too big -- it could not run (or very slowly anyway - you get the point!)

that's what this does .. it gives you more connections to any one server so you can recieve information faster because it's in smaller pieces..

phew :)

hey thanks!

next -->

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

and then Control Panel

click on the folder Desktop

there should be a red box called --> HungAppTimeout

double click it and set to --> 2000

(this will make your programs close more quickly)

there is another one called --> WaitToKillAppTimeout

set this to --> 5000

(this will make windows shut down faster)

basically the defaults are set at a really stupidly high level just in case someone has a really reaaally slow computer

these levels I have set are safe

in fact you can set them both at 2000 tbh!

Tell me how to completely erase vista and replace it with XP without destroying my computer. I fucking hate vista. It also glitches and gives me black screens.

I'm going back to an osx when this one dies.

i guess you could rent an external hard-drive and move everything onto that?

the only way to (safely) switch OS' is two wipe everything -- because everything in the computer is affected - the registry is one of the most important issues with this..

there is an especially large gap between changes made in XP and Vista - XP and 2000 are relatively similar (I know you didn't ask! haha)

yes! i mean i wouldn't apply tweaks to a machine with 64mb of ram - but seeing as how most machines around now have over 256mb -- i.e yeah it's safe!

JapanAlex
03-22-2008, 10:36 PM
also there is a tweak about getting the most out of your internet connection

I may post about this but there is a site here which is pretty good at explaining things and the guy in the forum will answer any threads in like and hour! lol he must have no life but he's nice..

www.speedguide.net

basically everything on the internet is sent, from the website to your computer, in "packets"

a packet is like a bag full of website goodies (ie pictures, flash, html etc)

the default XP packet size is something like 546? I think.. hmm

anyway -- the packet size is called the "MTU"

in the same registry explorer i talked about above you can change the size of the "MTU"

this will allow larger bags of goodies to be sent to your computer - thus faster downloads/uploads/surfing!

did you set it to boot from cd before the hard drive in the bios?

how do you do this?

JapanAlex

press F2 at startup

then go to --> boot

change the boot sequence to CD

Floppy Nono
03-22-2008, 10:46 PM
well you access the bios by pressing a button on start up. usually you see a screen when you first turn on the pc that says press Fsomething for a bunch of options. One of the options should be for the bios.

Are you using a store bought pc? what is the model number, i can try to look up what button you would specifically press.

TheMilstead
03-22-2008, 10:48 PM
Yeah, it's not always F2 as japanalex suggests. For example, mine is the Delete key. But your computer will tell you right when you boot.

JapanAlex

JapanAlex

GOSHDARNIT JAPANALEX IT'S NOT ALWAYS A FUNCTION KEY

oh chill out!

it's gonna be either F2 , F5 , F8, F10, F12 or the delete key

just google your PC brand (eg dell etc)

google search: dell bios key

you get it i'm sure :banging:

JapanAlex

Floppy Nono
03-22-2008, 11:07 PM
i found a post that says you can access the boot menu by pressing F12 on the model you have, xyumachine. I can't find a specific site for the bios itself but i think you could boot the cd from the boot menu option. I'm not totally sure. Check when you turn the computer on at the first screen you see, it should tell you the options you have in small font on the screen.

I would rather do this. Now I have to know how to do it.

Floppy Nono
03-23-2008, 04:49 AM
they're pretty easy to do for the most part. You just attach the given adapter to the end of the hard drive once you take it out of the computer and slip it into a shell and close that bad boy up! I don't know if you'd have to mount it with screws inside the enclosure, i've never had one like that but i suppose it's possible that it exists. I did this with an old 2.5 (laptop size) hard drive and made myself a nice little pocket usb drive out of it in minutes. For a desktop pc it would most likely be a 3.5 enclosure you'd need.

Starla
03-23-2008, 04:53 AM

well here is another internet speed trick -

press ctrl & R and type "regedit"

open and browse left-hand column

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Services

Tcpip

Parameters

****

Ok, let's add some new DWORD's in here ok! So right click and create new value

here are the names of the DWORD's you want to create:

1. EnablePMTUBHDetect -- set this to "0"

2. EnablePMTUDiscovery -- set this to "1"

3. Tcp1323Opts -- set this to "1"

4. TcpMaxDupAcks -- set this to "2"

5. SackOpts -- set this to "1"

ok :) now there are two more you need to create -- these are very important -- they will give you the maximum speed your internet provider (and windows!) is holding back on

you will have to add these two value's -- but wait till i've finished cos they are different for everyone

1. GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize

2. TcpWindowSize

you will need to check your internet speed for me okay and we can work together to get the best speed for you!

basically i said before about how the internet is like a pipeline and if you widen it you can let more through..

this is correct - but he's the more detailed version-

if the above two DWORD's are too small (for the provided speed) then you will not get your full speed

if it's two large your computer will loose packets of information from the server it is downloading from when you run a webpage

there is also a distance factor between you and any server you download from (different countries more distance)

JapanAlex
03-27-2008, 11:42 AM
okay PHEW!

so tell me your internet speed

is it 10Mbps? or whatever

just hover over the little internet sign in the taskbar

It's one optional GUI. Windows still loads fine and faster using the tweak I posted.

Don't listen to this JapanAlex guy he knows just enough to be dangerous

Is copying shit from another site really knowing anything?

Vista sucks. If they don't get it fixed it's going to be the next Windows ME. SP1 apparently didn't do much.

windows does not load fine

if you do not know the process names of everything you want to use on your computer you are fucked

so again, its mega stupid

ps. i know what you mean when you say "fine" but you are not understanding that the average user will not see that as "fine"

I had the same problem with Vista, ended up reformatting and reinstalling XP... what a piece of shit it is.

When you reinstalled xp, did it try to update you to the evil win 2 service pack?

JapanAlex
03-29-2008, 07:17 AM

The last update I downloaded for vista crashed my multi media keyboard driver. These updates do nothing but cause major fail.

so is there a single xp tweak listed in this thread that hasn't fucked up at least one person's computer?

I did <a href="http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm">these</a>, and when I got to Services, I changed them to what was in the "Safe" column. Worked out fine.

ok have your fun! :)

whatever you want!

they haven't done anything to anyone's computer - these are valid tweaks which many people know about

a noob

you obviously haven't tried this then

you need to know the process names of everything

including internet

so unless you write does everything before you apply this you can't do anything

its stupid and so are you

i know you're just having fun now aren't you..

you can't be THIS stupid can you??
