JokeyLoki 03-09-2008, 05:29 PM I got inspired by Mariner's thread, and found my camera... also started doing some basic Photoshop tutorials. (I don't know why I made them a bunch of different sizes)
Messing around with saturation/color selecting/color replacing...

JokeyLoki 03-09-2008, 05:50 PM i cranked one out to that bench
It is rather sexy...
Floppy Nono 03-09-2008, 05:54 PM do you know if the bench is single? do you think i should go over and talk to it?
JokeyLoki 03-09-2008, 06:07 PM I don't think it's single... it lives with this one. Though it does look like they're a bit seperated.

JapanAlex 03-09-2008, 06:53 PM i am a graphic designer - coincidence? I THINK NEY!
ok lesson 1. (haha!) in photoshop:
if you go to the option "mode" and then switch from RGB to LAB you can get a more vivid or dynamic photograph
ok after LAB - go to curves and there will be three settings in the scrollbox - L, A and B
you want to go to B and then pull the righthand corner little black box to the left - say - half of a square on the graph
then the same with the bottom lefthand corner black box to the right half a square
this will bring the colours up and give you a MUCh better image - just fiddle around with it!!
then revert back to RGB - fin
JokeyLoki 03-09-2008, 06:56 PM Cool beans, I'll fiddle around with that... thanks!
JapanAlex 03-09-2008, 07:05 PM for an example ----
oh and I have added some clarity with sharpening - 120% 0.7 pixles and 0 on the bottom box

dark and light is too strong and more brushing needed but really late for work hahaahha!!!!

The only picture I was ever proud of was taken about three or four years ago. I found it again some time ago and was disappointed that it actually wasn't so great at all, especially not in b/w [I have no idea why I changed the colors].
Anyway, let's see if I can find it.
Wow, this is even worse than I remembered:

JapanAlex 03-11-2008, 06:11 PM Krazee Stacee -
I know you probably don't want to know this (haha) but - when you take shots of mountains and the sea (things with a good horizon)
well, there is a loose rule of thumb - if you split the picture into 9 equal squares and then align the horizon onto one of the lines -- i.e 1/3 or 2/3 of the shot you can make a really dynamic effect
did I spell horizon correctly?
horizen .. horizan? hahaha

I have to add that I was very much in love with that girl back then. Yes, this is a girl.
Hehe. Hey it's not so bad :) I remember looking back at old photos the exact same way. Being totally enamoured with the person at the time to the point where they could've been spewing shit out of every orifice and I still would've thought they were beautiful, but now I go back and look at the photos and think that the only thing that'd make them worse pictures is, well, if they really were spewing shit out of every orifice. Actually, that'd make them great. So nevermind.

Stacey, I didn't even know you dabbled in photography! The cemetary shots are really well composed and printed nicely, too. If you have any more I'd l-o-v-e to see them.
I'd post some photos but I haven't had much time between school and other things to do much else than keep up with my 365 project. Though, I do like this picture of my feral kitty I took the other day. I have it in a gold, ridiculously ornate frame now. She looks so majestic in it :)

so far in this thread, kentaro's are the only good ones mostly cause he/she is the only one who knows what they're doing with a camera. kelsome's is pretty cool. everything else is either people who clearly have the right equipment but are completely uncreative with it (kimmy, byebyejune), entirely sophomoric (Kahlo), or just plain trash (everyone else in this thread)

I suppose this is a little true - although many people I know have very expensive camera's and no knowledge what-so-ever about photography
and then there are some of the most amazing shots done on very cheap camera's - (usually) edited afterwards on photoshop

smashkin33 03-16-2008, 09:06 PM I'm in love with my Holga... my only problem is that the processing and printing is so expensive. I spent $25 on processing 2 rolls the other day (single prints on one, double on the other). I really need to invest in a home processing kit. :(
when i was shooting on the holga a lot, i would just pay for the film processing (no prints)- it was a few bucks. i was in college at the time, and taking photo classes so i could use all the great equipment, like the medium format film scanners. it let me preview all the shots before i went ahead and made prints (either digital or traditional). this saved a lot of money. you can always use photoshop to make digital images look holga-esqe, but that kinda just takes the fun and charm out of shooting w/ toy cameras. it was fun walking around with a camera taped together w/ electrical tape, and a red filter taped on the front of it.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/smashkin33/beach.jpg">
i also had a lot of fun shooting with polaroid land cameras (the polaroid cameras from the 70's, with pull apart film, that you can get for dirt cheap on ebay now), which got to be too expensive- i was really into doing polaroid transfers. i don't have any of mine scanned, but this is how they turned out. they looked like watercolors- it was pretty time consuming too, but could be very rewarding.
here's what they look like:
<img src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_6tV1P6Mv5eI/RlyW2cwvH_I/AAAAAAAAAEI/O5nS44dPJc8/s400/springoak7.JPG">

celluloid_love 03-16-2008, 09:15 PM so far in this thread, kentaro's are the only good ones mostly cause he/she is the only one who knows what they're doing with a camera. kelsome's is pretty cool. everything else is either people who clearly have the right equipment but are completely uncreative with it (kimmy, byebyejune), entirely sophomoric (Kahlo), or just plain trash (everyone else in this thread)

anybody else here shoot with a pentax dslr system? i think i might be the only one here. canon & nikon are awesome, but i already had a slew of pentax 35mm slr lenses that are compatable w/ my pentax dslr- so that's why i went with the pentax body. i'm not dissapointed with the pentax at all, other than its a little harder to get accesories, and there are fewer lenses made by other companies (tamron, sigma) for them.

JokeyLoki 03-19-2008, 05:33 PM So what lenses would you guys recommend for a Rebel XTi? I know I need a telephoto, and probably a better wide angle... should I go with Canon, or are other brands better?

some people are real sticklers on staying with their camera brand lenses, but sigma & tamron make decent lenses.
imo, telephoto lenses are neat, but their novelty runs out pretty quick. i find i get more use out of wide angle lenses.
also, a normal lens with large aperture (like 1.4) comes in really handy. ("normal" being 35mm in the dslr format) the larger aperture is great for low light, i take a lot of live shots of local bands, and i'm able to get shots without using a flash.

if you have the money, get the following:
canon 10 - 22 mm as wideangle (alternatively the tokina 12-24 or the sigma 10-20 are ok as well)
perhaps the sigma 30 f1.4 (not absolutely neccesary)
a 50mm f1.4 (wait for the sigma to come out, it's probably cheaper than the canon)
something to walk around with, like the canon 55 - 250, the sigma 18 - 200 or better, the 28 - 300. in this lens you have everything you need. image quality might not be the best, but it's still more than good enough for personal use.

Canon 40D is probably a best buy
or an Olympus (is that spelt correctly - who knows)
you should just stick to the good old fashioned cell phone
... omg like totally retro
Kahlo 03-20-2008, 06:09 AM I'm doing a whole series of these shots, these ones are relatively new (Shot on monday) and will be in an exhibition later this year..

the shots where taken from within a 20 minute drive of where I live on the Ayrshire coast.

all three of the shots where taken from within a 20 minute drive of where I live on the Ayrshire coast.
first two are amazing, third one not so much. the person is nearly invisible in front of the very uneasy (that is not the right word for this) background. i think the bw doesn't help either...do you have a color version?
Kahlo 03-20-2008, 07:12 AM yep, i will upload it shortly. He is also standing at an angle, so i won't be using that image...
SlingeroGuitaro 03-20-2008, 07:23 AM i just saw your question about skye, alex- there is a path that leads to that waterfall. i was on one of those macbackpacker tours from edinburgh when i went up there.

I was reading about IS (Image Stabilization) lenses, are those worth the extra money? I plan on getting a tripod, so I wouldn't need it for those shots, but my hand-held shots can sometimes be kinda shakey...

i have never used an is lens so i can't really give you first hand experience, but from what i've heard they are generally worth it
Starla 03-20-2008, 02:43 PM I wasted my money on a canon sx 100 powershot that has image stabilization and I'm having problems with it. Maybe I haven't had enough time to really work with it yet. I prefer using my old pentax or brownie.
