man, this album is SO GOOD on first listen i had to create a thread. i'm not one to jump the gun before things absorb, but srsly, this record is great.

they're definitely redefining themselves as more than just trip hop. this album is on par with what i was expecting to hear on In Rainbows, more so than what I was expecting to hear on a Portishead album.

man, its good.....i mean really, really good. :banging:

shut up, really?? :) her voice makes me melt. joe was talking about it the whole car ride home.

they should either cover Wandering Star or Sour Times.

KrazeeStacee
03-07-2008, 04:31 PM
Yeah her voice is pretty awesome. Did Joe add them to his myspace? I checked cuz I wanted to add him as well, but I didn't recognize any that were him.

Also, the St. Patty's Day show is tenative now. It's possible they've moved it to the 24th (they being the idiots over at Subterranean). I'll keep you updated. We don't know what the hell is going on right now.

sub-t is so weird.... my roommate was part of a "lit magazine" launch party there, and they were all very weird about it.

well, let me know! joe might not have added them yet because he was getting ready to leave for new york. i'm not sure when he'll be back, but add him through mine!

YES! it's time to go. i'm outta here, talk to ya later. :)

AHA! I was trying to find him on your friends list and I saw someone that looked like him but it was hard to tell and it said "currenly in NY" and I was confused. I also didn't want to just add some random person off your list I didn't know lol

Have a good weekend! Talk to you later.

sort of reminds me of the way blonde redhead re-invented themselves for 'melody of certain damaged lemons' - they sound completely fresh again. a couple of tracks w/ banjos, or maybe that's a mandolin or ukelele on 'deep water'. either way, they work well in the mix. 'we carry on' sounds a bit like clinic w/ beth gibbons singing. the ending of 'silence' is sorta shocking on first listen, yet was completely perfect, esp when the song title is considered.

Downloading it as we speak. Portishead is probably the only band I can think of that has so far had pretty flawless discography. If this lives up to their standards, it'll be my favourite album of 2008 so far.

Dunno what to think of it after first listen. This is definately different than what I expected and Beth sounds like an angel here.

"Threads" is incredible in all it's haunting glory. "Small" and "Magic Doors" are excellent as well. This will take a while to sink in.

same here. at first i thought Coachella would be the start of something here, but they're heading back to Paris afterward to finish the EU tour through May.

i almost feel like if I don't hear something by a week before Coachella, I may have to reconsider that. sigh. hopefully by then there will be an announcement.

After two listens I am totally digging this album. For me this is one of the first albums in a long time that I feel in love with it on a first listen.

I see on a few other boards and blogs that people are somewhat trashing it though as being too close to Dummy and a throwback to the 90s. Not sure exactly what these people were expecting but the fact that we have any new Portishead is a good thing and this album is definitely good.

i'm in the same boat with pakula in that i feel in love with this album the first time i listened to it. it's been a while since that's happened with any band... even the new Kills album, who i absolutely adore, had to grow on me a bit.

i've been listening to this album nonstop. in fact, i'm listening to it again right now, heh.

the way the Rip builds and builds sends shivers down my spine ever time i listen to it. We Carry On is currently my favorite track, but everyone of them are really really good. i almost feel weird gushing like this, but it's just that good. period.

does anyone know when the physical release is coming out? any guesses on what, and if, the first single will be?

i love how the restraint and simplicity exercised on these Portishead tracks still results in powerful and soulful songs. The gritty/dirty/sleazy sounding guitar and synth tones throughout the album help add to this. Like the ending of the album.....so intense, relative to its simplicity. Then you have the vocals, in complete contrast to all of this....sounding more mature (and more like Tori) than either previous album imo.

It definitely doesn't sound like dummy, but i will agree it sounds more like dummy than the selt-titled.

I also got into this album really, really late. At first I wasn't crazy about it (my only previous exposure to Portishead was a song on a mix CD) but kept it in iTunes anyway. Every so often a song from the album came up on random and usually got my attention. I think it was "Threads" that finally convinced me to play the whole thing again and about two days later I bought it.

apparently, to your standards. and? you'll have to get past this fact that there are things that people, maybe sometimes masses of people, appreciate, that you do not. if at some point in your life you discover you enjoy something you previously did not, good for you. i've had many a moment. so who cares. you don't like or get something. it's okay. we can still be friends and jerk each other off.
