A previously unreleased Smashing Pumpkins song, "SuperChrist," will be released on a CD featuring bands staffed by employees of Guitar Center, Billboard.com can reveal.
The album will be available in a limited quantity beginning March 1 at Guitar Center outlets. The members of the Pumpkins chose the acts appearing on the compilation based on submissions from Guitar Center.
"Guitar Center asked us if we would be interested in contributing a song to this compilation of young artists to help draw attention to the bands," Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan says in a statement released to Billboard.com. "We loved the idea, and think Guitar Center is way ahead of the curve of what is possible between musicians and reaching new audiences."
"SuperChrist," which didn't make the cut for the Pumpkins' 2007 album "Zeitgeist" but has been performed live on the supporting tour, will be the subject of a new video, premiering Feb. 27 on MySpace.
"We didn't feel we understood the song and thought playing it on tour would help us sort it out," Corgan says of the song, which was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, Calif., with co-producer Kerry Brown. "He seems to bring out the psychedelic in us."
In addition, the Pumpkins are planning a new round of North American tour dates, with details to be announced.

Yeah, tour dates throughout Canada! Right, guys? Guys?
So the Linda Strawberry et al video shoot was for Superchrist, not Neverlost. This makes more sense.
Interesting that Superchrist was originally a Zeitgeist song, I've always thought it sounded like a "jam" song.......very similar to United States, as a matter of fact.
I'm not a huge fan of US, so I'm probably not going to be a huge fan of Superchrist....although "psychedelic" is tantalizing.
EDIT: Also, a full-length video for Superchrist, a non-album track? Weird.

evolution is solution, christ
one solution one makes you pure

i went and got one from the GC on halsted last nite. i fucking hate that place and the douchebag who seems to be the only one who ever rings me up. guh.
i have to say... on a clear recording, blasting through a good sound system, superchrist is pretty fucking awesome. i really didn't think there was hope for this song, but with a good quality version of it, you can hear all of the nuances of the drum fills, how tightly jimmy and billy play together, and the violin part doesn't even bum me out that much anymore.
i think julio had mentioned how there are parts that are reminiscent of lightning bolt, and i have to second this. the end is complete psychfreakdrone and i fucking love it.
goddamn you billy corgan, you did it to me again.
ps, the rest of the cd is fucking awful. not sure how many of you are aware of this, but the rest of the tracks ARE FROM GUITAR CENTER EMPLOYEES. if billy and jimmy really did have a say in who got put on this thing, then straight up, they have pretty crappy taste in music. i.m.o.

like i said above, i'll get to the scans when i get a chance. no time last night....and i don't have the ability to do it right now while at work.
it is a full cd in a jewel case with a booklet, back cover insert, etc.
for those interested, this is what it says about SC:
"Written by William Patrick Corgan, Faust's Haus Publishing (BMI). Produced and mixed by Kerry Brown, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin. Recorded by Kerry Brown. Mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Marcussen Mastering."

davin
03-05-2008, 10:33 AM
no, no pics whatsoever. the cover has a little girl in a summer dress mowing the lawn ...and it says "Fresh Cuts vol. 2"...and the rest of the inserts are basically words on top of a grass lawn background.
there is a sticker on the outer plastic wrap that says: Featuring the exclusive SMASHING PUMPKINS track "Superchrist".

Fucking crushing. Thanks Davin, this sounds so much better than the shitty video rip. Drumming is insane. The only thing that could make this better would be a few screams thrown in.

True that.
Also, even though I don't really like the little violin part, I'm SO happy that he decided to go violin there, and NOT "la la la la" voice crap like was so present in Zeitgeist and AG.
I hope he ditches the whole "50 Billys singing in a choir" crap and embraces other instruments in the next release, be it album or not.

you can blame RTB for that. He worked on Z and AG but not SC. As long as they work with him, it will be there.
Billy has commented about RTB's "vocal layering" and anyone who knows RTB's past work should be more than familiar. The difference is there's usually more than one person's vocals being used in the layering, at least for most of his past projects.
From everything i've seen/read, it seems like originally RTB was only going to be a partial contributor like Terry Date was. Then along the way BC & JC fell in love with RTB's work (which isn't bad by any means, just different for a Pumpkins album) and so they ended up using him on even more tracks and taking his advice on tracks that were originally supposed to be produced 100& by BC & JC themselves. Even Tarantula, if i remember correctly, was credited to just BC & JC on the Z album, but then credited to RTB as well, on the cd-single.

I see, that makes sense, then. I shall blame Roy for it all from now on. :)
Well then to rephrase, I hope they stay away from RTB for at least a little while. :) Because I like diversity in instrumentation more than layered vocals.

i don't think there was near as much controversy surrounding the band at that point (aside from jimmy killing melvion, but i'm not sure it had happened yet), the internets wasn't as widely used to circulate music, there was no video for it, and acendo wasn't any kind of attempt to show off guitar/drumming muscle.

In terms of rock, superchrist is what I had in mind a third of Zeitgeist would be like when Billy championed the album as a true return to RAWK! (or whatever words he used).
Then I heard the album and was literally confused at first...like, thinking "this isn't even close to as heavy as he duped me into believing". Listen to Superchrist's raw production. Nice!
Granted, Zeitgiest (minus the goofy backing vocals) is a step in the right direction from Machina 1, but pre-Z I was happy to express my confidence that Billy would be back to form after hearing him describe his intentions. Raw and heavy. In my mind there was no way he could mess that up. ...only he didn't actually go for that at all. **sigh** Don't get me wrong. I like Zeitgeist. But I only like it in a way that I like a lot of albums.
Granted, Superchrist is unfinished with respect to songwriting in my mind. But I'm trying to talk about the general direction Billy decided to go in more than I am about Superchrist specifically, especially since Superchirst didn't even make B-side status (accompanying a single).

You're not crazy. The actual bass guitar is low in the mix (or perhaps they high-passed it at 100 freaking Hertz like they describe in that one interview as a Roy Thomas Baker trick). But the guitars and drums are dripping in low-end so it wouldn't surprise me if it was intentional.

I agree that the guitars have enough low end that the bass isn't totally missed.
The song is fantastic in higher quality, you can really hear the interplay between Billy and Jimmy which propels the song. I never really noticed before, and it helps lessen the boredom from the repetition off the riff.
Still needs a guitar solo though.

She came back after some murmuring in the background and said, "yeah, we have a couple copies left." I asked, "volume two?" and she said "yeah, the new one."
I headed down and spoke to the five people on the floor, two of which claimed to be the store manager and they had no idea what the fuck I was talking about, or were too high to understand. Finally, after fucking around with a p bass for a while, I gave up and headed out. I decided to ask some kid who looked no older than 16 who was standing at the entryway and he said, "Oh yeah, there's a sweet Pumpkins track on it which is fuckin' sick!" I played dumb told him I was interested in the Spectre track and he was all... "yeah, man it's fuckin' sick too! They did an instore..." and started blabbing on. I said "yeah man, when will you get them in" and he was all "I dunno, soon man. Keep checkin' back and rollin' those sweet bass riffs, maann."

Guitar Center isn't bad. It all depends on what department you go into. The acoustic guitar guys in NYC are always nice and knowledgeable, and the dudes behind the accessories counter are always nice. It's more the wanna-be rocker customers the store attracts that give it a bad name.

noooo. no. it's not the customers so much as the douchebags who work there.
i picked up a used guitar there, was seriously considering purchasing it, but wanted more information. you know, where it had come from, if there were any things of note that i should be aware of, etc. the guy took it from me, looked at it, and said, "well, it's got 22 frets, no pickguard, two humbuckers, and a rosewood neck. should i ring you up?"
"why are you talking to me like i've never picked up a guitar before?" and i walked out.
