There's actually a 3rd deer in that pic. Look at the ear in the bottom left-hand corner. I suggest a thread title change to "Two deer, an ear, and a cat".

I admit, I didn't look very carefully at your post. But now I'm just confused.

There are two people, sppunk and this deviantart person, in on the conspiracy to claim authorship of the photo? Are they the same person?

Even that Fishbone site says he/she got it from someone who "received this from one of our agent's offices," which makes it sound like some stupid chain letter that has been around the 'net for years and would end up on Snopes. (It hasn't.)

This is just weird. I don't care if sppunk claimed he was there, I just want to know where it really came from.

Ooh! I am searching as I post. Do a search for "Marilyn Thornbery." She's going around to all the blogs where this pic has been posted, claiming it's hers. I haven't seen yet if this is true. She claims she has several more photos in the series to prove it.

This picture came to me by way of a forward. The source of the picture was attributed to a lady in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, taken on Saturday.

Deer on the deck. Looking in the sliding glass door. That would certainly bring excitement in this household! I wouldn't want the deer to be finding their way through the window...

Brings to mind the story I read over at Simply Outdoors (http://www.simplyoutdoors.net/2008/01/24/the-lighter-side-of-simplyoutdoorsnet) about Jeff's deer hunt that seemed to find the bucks confused.

At any rate, I wanted to share this picture of a buck, nose to nose, looking longingly into the eyes of an individual of the opposite species. You just wonder what they're thinking???

POST UPDATE March 5, 2008: The original photographer of this picture has offered the facts. Please read the following -
This is in regards to the deer and Cat photo.
It had been brought to my attention that some one claiming to had taken this photo is from Wisconsin.
i am just here to say this is not true, i am the owner of this photo and it was posted in the " country Extra" magazine - Jan issue of 2008 - page 22.
It clearly states Marilyn Thornbery, outta Colorado was the photographer.
i took this shot and a series of approx 10 more in sequence of the interactions between my cat and the deer. so if your reading this Post and can pass along the information and give credit due where it belongs, i'd appreciate it.
Thank you, M. Thornbery

I got this Email too and I seldom forward anything but this one as it was so nice . I sent it along to several friends . 2 days later I was reading The Country Extra Magazine and there on page 22 was another picture of the same deer .The caption under the picture read [Nose to nose."I found this scene when I went to investigate the funny noises my cat was making at the patio door",says MarilynThornbery of Kiowa,Colorado."I put cracked corn out to help the deer, and this one climbed up onto the deck to look for more food."] It realy ticked me to think I passed along a lie .

Clyde Newcomb, Plaster Rock

OK, I never post to any forum boards but feel I must in this case. My mother IS the owner of this photo. She took it back in January 07. Her name is Marilyn Thornbery and indeed from Kiowa, Colorado. It is her cat Freedom in the picture. Ask any of these others that are claiming it to show a picture of the "cat" in the photo....or a picture of the deck. Anything.....Please gives credit where credit is due, and to the others......do NOT steal the works from others. If there are further questions please inquire with Marilyn at Tumbleweed@hughs.net

Kent Thornbery, Denver

Jeff, in my area of Albany, NY, said it was his. The photo was shown on a TV Weather segment with credit going to "Jeff and Sue." I asked the metrologist if I could have the photo so I could share it with the various golden retriever email groups I'm on. Shortly after I posted the photo I received a reply from a list member stating that the same photo was on the John Deere site, but it was from upper MI, not NY. Something didn't seem right and I wanted to find the REAL owner. I started surfing on Friday and finally, yesterday, I came to this forum and read the post submitted by Clyde Newcomb. I first tried to see if I could find any info the magazine had, but found zip. Then, I surfed using Marilyn's name and that's when I came across her email address! I email her asking if she was the owner of the deer and cat picture. I explained that a couple in my area claimed it as theirs. She immediately wrote back saying she took the photo. Sadly, she had no idea what was going on!

TOOL HELP (http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/onsite.php?page=tools)

<script type="text/javascript"> makeCompatibleBookmark(); </script> Andrea McAuliffe
Telegraph-Journal Published Saturday February 2nd, 2008
Appeared on page A1
The photograph was delightful, a nature lover's Kodak moment. An inquisitive male deer nosing a black and white house cat against a windowpane, captured on a snowy day in a backyard near Fredericton.
It arrived at the Telegraph-Journal last week, submitted to the Saturday Sightings column. It was, the e-mail noted, shot by Art Carr of Douglas, three years retired from NB Power.
Reaction in the newsroom was unanimous. "Awwww, so cute!" Plans were made to go big with 'Deer meets cat' as soon as the photo's provenance could be confirmed.
The first phone call to Art Carr reached the wrong Art Carr, who also coincidentally, was an NB Power retiree but knew the right Art Carr, the one who reportedly took the photo.
He denied taking the picture, though he knew all about it. The mule deer shown is not native to New Brunswick, he said, calling the whole thing a hoax.
A former co-worker found the picture on the Internet and captioned it - Look what Art Carr does now that he's retired from NB Power - and sent it around. It fooled people because the cat looked just like Carr's cat, Spooks, and everyone knew Carr liked to feed deer in his backyard.
Over the next few days the photograph arrived again and again at the newspaper, e-mailed from all over, still claiming to be from Art Carr's place in Fredericton. But something did not seem right, and the mysterious deer photo began gaining widespread attention.
Since it began circulating on Jan. 15, Carr has received dozens of calls.
"In the first week, I got four or five a day," he said. "And they keep coming. I just had a woman call this morning. Her son lives in Arizona and he got the photo. She lives here."
Newspapers have phoned and one person from Nova Scotia asked to buy the rights to the photograph to put it on the cover of a book. There were reports Friday of the picture popping up on the Weather Network, and there is hot debate online over its authenticity.
Rod Cumberland, New Brunswick's deer management biologist, said he thinks the photo is fake, doctored with Photoshop. He said the deer in the photo is a mule deer, a yearling, and that they are only common in western North America.
"The distinguishing features that identify it as a mule deer - and not a white-tailed deer - are the size, and coloration of the ears, the dark hair between the ears and eyes, and the formation of the antlers," he said.
"Photoshop software really has caused these things to become prolific and falsified routinely, so I'm usually a bit skeptical initially."
Cumberland said a similar photo of a cougar peering through a window at a baby made the rounds last year, purportedly taken in the French Village part of Rothesay.
But Tim Pfinder, a digital photographer at Photography Flewwelling in Saint John, believes the snapshot is credible
"There's nothing about this that indicates to me that it's a fake," he said, adding that the cat-to-deer proportion and the lighting are both perfect.
"Light is almost impossible to fake," he said. "But the lighting in this photo is right."
For now, the mystery remains unsolved. Are rogue mule deer roaming Fredericton? Or is someone trying to pass off one coast for another?
As for Carr, he is taking his sudden celebrity in stride.
"I think it's quite funny," he said. "Who would ever think that some little thing like this would go so far?"
