Wouldn't 2008 be the 20th anniversary of the early SP recording sessions? If so, I say it's something to celebrate. :)

http://web.archive.org/web/19990224064336/http://www.netphoria.org/

if you go right to the bottom it has news from the 15th jan 1998 (and 400,000 hits), and says for earlier news to click "old news". so it must have been right at the start of 98 (400,000 hits in 2 weeks is a lot though...), or most likely late 97.

i recently found a box of with my pen pal letters of sp friends i had when it was prodigy and then maybe aol. i have a print out of an email saying that the person thought the first single was going to be zero and it was all so exciting and anticpatory. they are mostly from early 1995 i think. i smiled when i found that box

Zero nearly wasn't a single too, thanks to those bastards at Virgin.

Feb 1st 1998. I think we can go with the public launch as the start date.

have the boards been around for as long as the site itself? I guess I wasn't paying attention to netphoria then; I was just all up on amsp back then. It wasn't much different than this place, come to think of it.

what were you guys doing 20 years ago?
I was in the 8th grade, learning to ollie on my skateboard and listening to INXS.

surely i'm not the only old person here who wasn't still a toddler when sp started?

it's too bad i wasn't living in chicago at the time; I was getting into "good" music at that time (discovered punk, the cure, depeche mode, etc), so maybe I would've heard about them and liked them early on. Then again, I was only 14, so I guess I wasn't hitting up the clubs and bars just yet, so nevermind.

i was 6. i had a lazy eye busted teeth and probably a perm.
no, i didn't get a perm 'til i was about 11. THANKS A LOT, MOM.

but it's okay, its stuff like that that molded me into the person i am today.

skipgo
01-15-2008, 12:54 PM
oh i definitely had a perm in 1988. It was the decade of "big hair". I have a pretty funny prom photo where i had the jersey girl hair going on like crazy. talk about embarrassing.

the pumpkins should do something special on the anniversary of the first show...

i miss babysitting- it was such an easy way to make money as a tween/teen

20 years after the first album is put out? or 25 years.

i can see it happening. I wonder how many more years we have to wait?
i wonder if darcy and james could really turn down the opportunity? That's a huge deal in their field, I would imagine even they would show up for that.

I feel fucking old and melancholic.

In 1988 I was 11 and my regular listens were Bon Jovi, Europe, U2, Deacon Blue, Modern Talking, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black, The Communards, Michael Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Spandau Ballet, Whitney Houston...

Of course, I had no idea of the great contemporary bands that existed and I ignored virtually every great band from before 1982.

Strange to think about a beginner Billy in that remote era.

P.S: I am not ashamed of any of the artist in the list, no matter how cheesy they might look today. They all, in one way or another, lead me to my current musical taste.

I wasn't even conceived in '88.

Stop that, you're making me feel ancient! *uurgh* I was 9 in 88 and it would take me another seven years to find out about the Pumpkins. But Gish came out in 1991, maybe they'll mark their 20 years anniversary in 2011 instead? Then again maybe Billy don't wanna think about that he's been in the biz for 20 years and further fuel his pending(???) midlife crisis.

flyfire
01-15-2008, 09:49 PM
of course they will 25 years: 1991 - 2016 what other bands released in 1991 Pearl Jam, if they get in SP definately will.
