I was thinking about this the other day, and seeing that I'm unlikely to be owning it any time soon, I'd really like to see some good pics of the gatefold inlay and the booklet it came with. It must be a really nice package, shame it goes for so much on ebay.

I don`t get it, several seller on ebay have come up lately with a new version that doesn`t have the white box with or without the number and claim it`s a reissue.
Just like this one:
http://i2.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/d0/8a/0d99_1.JPG
But apart from ebay there`s nothing to find about such a reissue.
So I assume these new versions floating around on ebay are bootlegs?

They should start releasing CD's with the same packaging as records....
anybody remember what packaging cds came in during their early days?
they came in boxes that were really long, i'm googling for an image, with no luck at the moment!

Long? Never heard of 'em.
The oldest CD I had (Neil Young Harvest Moon) came with those instructions on how to clean them and how they would get ruined if used on a turntable. The plastic was very good and thick, unlike the ones that come out nowadays.

i got one of those. (well, someone was nice enough to get it for me. i normally don't spend any money on bootlegs, but in this case i wanted to check it out for myself. and it wasn't as expensive as the ones on ebay, so.)
there are a lot of small differences between the official release (with the white box) and this "re-release" without the white box. there are little color differences everywhere. the labels have the same text, but are also labeled with an extra letter (from A to D, indicating the six different sides). the matrix numbers are different. in fact, the whole pressing is different: the grooves don't look the same. new pressing plates were made to create this "reissue". the book and the inner sleeves are made of very white paper. and so on...
basically, none of these differences necessarily makes this a bootleg. but if you add them up, and take into account that these only recently started popping up (most of them in the netherlands), without any word from the record company about this re-release, i think it's safe to assume that this is a bootleg. a very well made bootleg, but still, nothing official.
to me it looks like someone with the right equipment made scans of all the artwork and did the best they could to reproduce it. the result is close to the original. i think if you don't have the original, most people wouldn't even notice.
i haven't listened to the entire album, but i checked some songs already and i didn't immediately notice a quality problem.
a quality problem could give it away as a bootleg. but once again, nothing convincing here. very well made.
i've also seen a couple of yellow vinyl mcis 3lps showing up on ebay recently. my guess is that this is the same bootleg, only on yellow vinyl now.
(compare with the machina promo 12" bootlegs: i think there's three different ones of them. all on one vinyl, incomplete, but with the same tracklisting, one of them is even a picture disc.)

They were called long boxes, it was a lame attempt to prevent theft. Somewhere around 1990 there was a huge consumer backlash about the waste of paper caused by the extra useless packaging.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longbox
Longboxes were used because they allowed CDs to be sold in the same bins as vinyl. By themselves, CDs were too short to be visible. Longboxes were used to make them taller.
This made it easier for retailers to sell both side-by-side without having to invest in separate shelf-space for CDs.

here are some pictures that compare the numbered release with the mysterious new version without white box.
the numbered version is always on top.
note how the colors are never the same. usually they're a bit more yellowish. it makes the band members look like they have some liver disease.
as mentioned earlier: the book is printed on very white paper. i don't think the original numbered and unnumbered versions ever looked so white.
the inner sleeves are also different: the original releases had sleeves with some plastic (?) on the inside (anti-static or something). this new version has inner sleeves made of just paper.
i found a tiny picture of the yellow vinyl bootleg on ebay.

well i bought my "fake" mellon collie vinyl for 20 € on amazon - and the sound is good - as well as the design (well there is no number)
so even if it's not an offical release i'm pleased with it
looks and sounds real - that's all i wanted
I actually really dig this tracklisting and each disc's heading. I am going to listen to all the tracks in that order today. It's been a while since I've listened to MCIS. hooray!
I do have a question, however. What is "infinite sadness" (track 5 of "Starlight")? I know "tonite reprise" happens at the end of one of the songs on the CD (farewell and goodnight?) but I didn't know there was another thing. Can j00 guyz tell me?

infinite sadness is a previously unreleased track. but it can be found on mashed potatoes, where it was still called mellon collie. (http://www.spfreaks.com/Default.aspx?page=COLLDETAILS&item=282)
both tracks have also been released on itunes and such: http://www.spfreaks.com/Default.aspx?page=COLLDETAILS&item=2024

Oh ok. Yeah, I see, I got mixed up. Let me explain so I at least don't look like a COMPLETE idiot. :)
The first piano track, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", appears again as a "reprise" (at least in the MCIS tab book) at the end of Farewell and Goodnight (at about 3:29).
I got that "reprise" mixed up with the title "Tonite Reprise". I have heard Tonite Reprise from the AFH Boxed Set that I borrowed from a friend years and years ago. It's been a long time so I was a little confused.
And to be honest, no, I've never heard "Infinite Sadness" before, as I don't think I've ever heard anything off Mashed Potatoes (and if I have I didn't realize it). But thanks for the links. A bunch!
Edit: Also I don't use itunes, have never purchased music from itunes, and don't have $100 on me for "Rarities & B-sides" so I'll just have to wait. :) Thanks, again, though.

Without physically comparing, you could assume the pressing plates for these bootlegs are made from CDs as they would not have access to the master tapes. It may "sound" clean but its most likely just a copy of the CD transferred on to vinyl.

The MCIS vinyl bootleg isn't just available on ebay, but in shops too. Last week I saw one hanging out in this vinyl store, I got very excited but then I saw it was a bootleg being sold for 60€. Also, this guy sells these bootlegs daily 'cause I see new copies of it every week, pretty sad if you're a collector.
There also appears to be a red bootleg version floating about now...
