View Full Version : Billy Corgan mentioned on new Futurama DVD
hereisnowhy 01-06-2008, 02:55 PM If you watch Bender's Big Score with the audio commentary, when the final battle is starting the writers/director/actors start talking about how Zapp Brannigan's ship looks kind of like a canned ham. I can't tell who is talking, but the conversation goes like this:
"I think we really captured the grandeur of canned ham."
"Hey, that would make a great title for an album."
"Billy Corgan already made that song."
"Yeah, he did, haha."
Whether this is meant as a snide criticism of Corgan's subject matter or a salute to his prolificacy is not clear. In any case, I move to have "The Grandeur of Canned Ham" added to the SPFC.
i_adore_adore 01-06-2008, 03:13 PM interesting.
He does have some pretty odd song names, I reckon.
Frankenstein 01-06-2008, 03:19 PM zwan
Mayfuck 01-06-2008, 03:19 PM def should be the name of the next album, if not 'electric space theater'
i_adore_adore 01-06-2008, 03:34 PM electric space heater would be cool.

themadcaplaughs 01-06-2008, 03:58 PM I do not think it is meant to be a critical joke on Corgan's behalf. Matt Groening mentioned on a Simpsons DVD commentary that he saw Corgan at a wrestling match in 2003 and has gotten to be good friends with him.

Frankenstein 01-06-2008, 04:49 PM what the fuck is that
they make a canned ham joke about bc and you think it's not about zwan?
seriously?

seriously?
I hadn't thought of that. They would have to be pretty hardcore Corgan geeks to joke about the existence of both kinds of Zwan. Seems like a stretch, but now I'm curious.
^^ isn't that exactly what the futurama joke is about?????

seconded. it'll help the fact checkers and this will cut down on any misunderstandings in the future.

I don't know, it might have been just a comment that he has odd song titles. If it was a zwan joke they are seriously in the know as far as obscure Corgan trivia goes. One of us should ask them. Does anyone here go to that Comicon thing or whatever convention they show up at?
Frankenstein 01-06-2008, 07:44 PM lol comicon.
if they were going strictly off oddness why wouldn't they say Ween?
PPsan 01-06-2008, 10:02 PM It's not that obscure. I'm eating some zwan sausages right now, they go great with cocktail sauce!
stumpycat 01-06-2008, 11:25 PM Well, I (and most other people) have noticed that Matt Groening and co. do seem to really get off on interpolating numerous (sometimes rather obscure) pop culture references in their programs--like an easter egg hunt of sorts for those who are "in the know." That's always been one of the most rewarding aspects for reasonably astute viewers of The Simpsons, who can fully appreciate the less overt subtexts and references. A lot of the most entertaining shows operate on dual levels like that.
So, um, in short...yeah, I think it's reasonable it might have been a deliberate reference.

Ehhh, I wouldn't say knowing Billy was in Zwan is that "obscure".

how about knowing that zwan is similar to spam?
Rickpat12 01-07-2008, 12:25 AM how about knowing that zwan is similar to spam?
I'll give them that however that isn't obscure Billy triva as mentioned, that's more world trivia I guess?
stumpycat 01-07-2008, 12:31 AM Haha...go ask Joe Public about Zwan. A firm majority would look at you like, " WTF???" I mean, most people I've met don't even know who Billy Corgan is (let alone his "side band".)
commando 01-07-2008, 02:22 AM Zwan was a pretty kickass name for a band, though... especially since billy just made the word up and then found out later it's a meat of similar caliber of spam.
teh b0lly!!1 01-07-2008, 02:35 AM i actually said 'what the fuck' about what was on the plate
though now i am curious about the zwan thing
