That shit's all over the place...but I dig it! I love the wanky 80's metal soloing, too. (Namely, because I just listen to this kind of music anyway.) Actually there are plenty of metal bands that use somewhat "dissonant" arrangements at times though.

Yeah, but I think as it goes for most talents, you either pick it up pretty quickly...or you don't. If you have a natural talent for something it's generally just a matter of refining skill to its fullest potential with adequate practice.

No, I am quite sure it was 18, he's said it several times while criticizing the oversexed American youth of today. He was bitching about kids losing it at age 11 I think.

Can anyone here teach me some shredding basics? I've been playing guitar for a year and I still can't solo or improvise for shit.

Look up the basic scales online and practice them a lot. Not just going up and down but practice them along to music. Try to find melody in them and stuff. Major scale and minor pentatonic is a good place to start, those are pretty much the only 2 Corgan uses. Then get really good at moving your pick hand at a million miles an hour. I guess some people have a really hard time with this... my bandmate has been playing guitar for over 10 years and he is really really excellent, but he can't shred or play over a certain speed to save his life. I suck and am really really sloppy but I can play fast as shit.

Hammer on/pull off, finger-tap the fretboard, practice on scales...and let your fingers show the string who's boss. You have to hit that shit with some force if you're not going to pick the notes individually (which would kind of blow the technique) and if you want to keep playing in time.
