iTunes plus isn't lossless

Olivier

its the itunes' version of 'lossless' though.

the drm free, "high quality" MP4 files.

what's the difference in quality between itunes and itunes plus?

Olivier
12-21-2007, 12:09 PM
CUPERTINO, California—May 30, 2007—Apple® today launched iTunes® Plus—DRM-free music tracks featuring high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio quality virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings—for just $1.29 per song.

iTunes will continue to offer its entire catalog, currently over five million songs, in the same versions as today—128 kbps AAC encoding with DRM—at the same price of 99 cents per song, alongside the higher quality iTunes Plus versions when available. In addition, iTunes customers can now easily upgrade their library of previously purchased EMI content to iTunes Plus tracks for just 30 cents a song and $3.00 for most albums.

no, apple's version of lossless is "Apple Lossless" which isn't used anywhere in the iTunes Music Store at all. iTunes plus is a 256kbps AAC file, vs the standard 128kbps. Apple doesn't advertise it as 'lossless' and for you to insist that is just plain wrong

What's a "mp3?"

I wonder if this makes it more likely that American Gothic will be available in iTunes Plus format. I understand the Pumpkins are no longer in contract to Warner, so they may set their own terms for iTunes downloads. Does the band even know the difference?

It's also unclear if American Gothic will be available in my local (Australia) iTunes store or if it will be in shops only. I can't see it getting into the shops in January - seems logistically impossible.

I'd happily buy it from iTunes Plus, but I don't buy music with DRM. I bought an ebook the other day with DRM - what a pain it was to get it working on my laptop and PDA. DRM is horrible.

And yeah, iTunes Plus is not lossless, but very few people can tell the difference between an iTunes Plus track and a CD track in blind tests. Most also can't tell the difference between 128kbps AAC and CD for that matter. Other factors affect the music quality far more than a small amount of compression (speaker quality, room acoustics, etc.).

My guess is that within a couple of years, most music will be available in 'lossless' CD quality anyway. It's just a matter of disc space/bandwidth. An iTunes Plus track is about 8MB for an average song compared with about 30MB for perfect CD-quality compressed to FLAC. Multiply that by how many millions of songs iTunes sells and the 0.5% quality loss is worth the 70% saving in bandwidth costs.

I still don't understand the anal-retentive attitude that MP3/AAC is some kind of blasphemy. CDs are lossy in that they are not at the same quality the music is recorded in - it is reduced to the CD specs. Reducing by a fraction of a percent further is negligible.

That said, I'm converting a lot of my music to lossless .wma for my zune on principle.

I was. Earlier in the year it was going for $18 for the whole thing and I was waiting for iTunes Plus to be launched to buy it.

I ended up downloading the songs in FLAC illegally because they took so long to release them without DRM.

I already had a lot of those tracks on CD anyway, so I'm not willing to pay the price they're asking now.

The Melty Man

I got them when they did have DRM for $18.00. Now all I have to do is upgrade my library when they bring out the DRM free versions. And between now and my last upgrade they've added the Dark Side of the Moon to iTunes Plus, excellent.

Although seeing as they're now charging exactly the same price for DRM and non-DRM songs on iTunes, I wonder why they charge us to upgrade what we could've bought for the same.

I thought about buying it back then, but I despise DRM and wouldn't be able to play the tracks on my MP3 player or my media center (which is where I play all my music at home).

did you pay more than 13 bucks for gish? that was 10 songs in the format of infinitely replicable pieces of digital data. only difference is it is read optically, not magnetically.

honestly i don't understand what your complaining about. i mean there is plenty to complain about apple and itunes, don't get me wrong. but you haven't really mentioned any of those reasons?

trev

exactly, that's one of the decent reasons that makes sense.

but for occasions like this when it is the best digital format you have access to, you have to suck it up and say "fuck you, corgan" and buy that lossy shit.

i mean when do you really think we'll get a digital lossless version of these tracks? or even machina II, which is more likely, but i'm not holding my breath.

No, I've never paid more than $10 for any full psysical ablum from a store. What I mean is that the data you're paying to retrieve is just fucking sitting there...no one and nothing packaged it, you're not paying for any physical replication, you're not paying for a booklet, not a CD...not employees working in a brick-and-mortar store. If a system can be so much more direct-to-customer, why the fuck is the middle man still taking a massive fucking hunk of the money? This could still be profitable for artists (probably labels, too) at a far cheaper price, considering the pissy little percentage royalties they receive from physical album sales. This al-a-carte format is partially to blame, too...I think people would be more pissed if they were paying for whole albums this way. Fucking fatass record companies can shove it. I-tunes too. Same principle.

A) Albums + Artwork
B) Lossless

ITunes is *completely* obsolete until they become lossless. They're still sub-par even if/when they do.
