I emerge from my seemingly eternal self-imposed silence to bring good news! The collective We is happy to announce that We have just finished a new acoustic e.p. entitled 'American Gothic' that features 4 new songs:

* The Rose March
* Again, Again, Again (the crux)
* POX
* Sunkissed

Even better is the news that these songs will be available on i-tunes starting January 2nd...the collective We looks forward to you hearing these new songs afresh and us playing them to you anew on the upcoming European and Australian tours...

Since the holidays are upon us, the collective I would like to take this opportunity to give gratitude where it is due, and that is to those that are not hypnotized, or so numbed by darkness that they cannot hear the chime in my words...I wish you a warm holiday and a brilliant New Year to come, and may you get all you deserve! (again) From my heart to yours, sincerely, I hope you feel the love that we have for all of you, even for those of you who are lost and seeking, bruised and still keeping...i hope these words find you as well...

The new day has finally come as we turn the corner on the end of one energy that no longer serves us and begin to embrace the new dawn that will...and no, I am not speaking about the band or the music business...what is past is passed, and we all wear the black arm bands in honor of, but life happily, as it should, marches on...hopefully to a good beat...

Thanks to New Orleans for showing Us the meaning of hope...and thanks to the old guard for showing the same dull move, you know the one that never works? Art band that said old guard wishes they were in so bad that they wish importance upon it? Check! No matter what you crutches all dream up, Led Zep is still a 100 times better! Go Zep! Go Team! Rock on! Long Live the Mighty SP!
And...

Thank YOU for showing up! And yes, I mean YOU :)

lovingness, happiness, BC

Corgan never ceases to confound us. The song titles are choice (much better than Zeitgeist's) and although I would have picked a different Residency song to in<clu>clude, The Rose March isn't bad.

I would love it, if they did this sort of thing from now on. Release about 4 to 6 songs every six months to a year, instead of releasing an album's worth every 2 to 3 years. I hope this also leads to less production in the end. After listening to Machina again this morning, I again realized how overproduced it sounded.

how does that mean they won't put it out on cd later? Stellar was "i-tunes exclusive" at first, too. ended up on torrent sites right after. then hey it's on the best buy thing.

it's no big deal, i can just see them doing a few of these then later putting them all on a cd.

How many devices these days can't handle unprotected AAC? iPod and Zune both do. If the .001% of the population with some shit-box player can't play it, then they can transcode the 256 file to CD and re-rip it, or upgrade to a decent player.

This sounds like it's going to be cool. And reasonable cover "art" for a change (simple and reminds me of older pumpkins stuff).

Can't wait to hear it. I remember not really liking The Rose March very much, but it's not bad.

I, however, don't want to see this "release music every 4-6 months on itunes" stuff unless it's just a supplement to more albums. Like they've done. So that's good too. Hoorays all around.

the EP will be available for individual purchase on iTunes or as part of a deluxe iTunes version of the band's critically hailed 2007 album Zeitgeist. In the U.S., iTunes is the exclusive retailer; elsewhere in the world, American Gothic will be available as a physical product at retail. Fans will also be able to download the EP artwork for free via www.smashingpumpkins.com on January 2.

"I have performed 'The Rose March' occasionally solo on tour, and the response from the audience always seemed to indicate the song had the 'X' quality." The song had an early unveiling in November 2006 when BILLY performed it at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles as part of a series of shows assembled by Pete Townshend's girlfriend and songwriter partner Rachel Fuller. "Afterwards, Pete came up to me and asked me if we were putting that song on Zeitgeist. I told him we weren't, and he told me I was crazy. That stuck with me--Pete certainly knows more than I."

Featuring the songs "The Rose March," "Pox, "Again, Again, Again (The Crux)" and "Sunkissed," the EP will be available for individual purchase on iTunes or as part of a deluxe iTunes version of the band's critically hailed 2007 album Zeitgeist.

Notice William forgot the " after Pox? Maybe the songs are:

"The Rose March"
"Pox, "

" the EP will be available..."

It was Mr. Militia who forgot that closing quotation mark. But I like your interpretation better than mine. I thought one of the songs was called:

"Pox, "Again, Again, Again (The Crux)" <-- the quotation mark before the first "Again" is meant to be part of the song title.

So The Rose March is from the Pete Townshed shows, wow, that's pretty sweet. Kinda makes you wonder if some of the other residency songs were made at a way earlier date too. But hey this sounds promising, acoustic Pumpkins are good pumpkins. I also second the question on whether or not they changed the name of a residency song and threw it on here.

I don't have any reason to think it would be on any label but Warner/Reprise. I don't know how many albums his deal was for, but I'd think that if he was planning on releasing this EP worldwide, we'd have heard about a different label handling the distribution.

would it be possible for their deal with Warner/Reprise to be different with the international outlets of the label? It would explain why this is being physically released everywhere but the United States.

I'd be surprised if they re-signed with Warner/Reprise. All things indicate that Corgan is disenchanted with the majors in general.

You are probably right. I'm pretty sure the contract was up after this album though. Maybe that doesn't i.n.c.l.u.d.e EPs or recordings made during tour breaks, or he just signed a 1 release deal kinda thing that Radiohead did.

Well Warner is a worldwide company so for him to release it on an indie (or himself) would be more work for him than I'm sure he wants to deal with, especially when it comes to licensing it to different countries and territories.

Also, assuming that BC's deal was for only 3 albums (Zwan, TFE, Zeitgeist), he could still release material through them without resigning an extended contract, especially something like an EP.

If that is the deal, then this is a break in form....the labels generally don't play small ball by doing EP deals. He could be still releasing it via Warner's, but there's gotta be something about it that keeps this thing from being physically released in the United States. If this was an iTunes-only deal there would be no physical release to speak of...but it's not, with exception to the United States, there is a physical release.

True, Warner's is a world wide company. So are all of the majors. However, they still have different divisions and each country has different methods of doing business.

Not true.

Labels do those kind of EP deals all the time. A lot of times the contracts ******* clauses for singles/EPs.

What I am betting on here is that the label is making this a digital-only release because it knows this is not anything that would sell hundreds of thousands of copies, so they're not putting any real marketing or production dollars into it.

Also, Billy had a lot of power when signing w/Warner, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has the right contractually to release digital-only music in the US with Warner having the option to release physically in any territory/country they want.

Billy has always embraced the internet and preached it even when signed with Virgin, so I'm sure he has a lot of flexibility in this area.

From the few things he's said on tours, he doesn't seem too happy with them now either. If they stay with a label I could see either their deal changing to a point that has the label acting in a capability that is less hands on. That seems to be how things are going as a whole. Personally, I'd like to see the band just sell all their stuff themselves digitally. Even if they set up a download store at their site and give the option for FLAC and MP3. If they want physical distribution, they could strike their own distro deal and skip the label altogether.

the whole thing (visually) makes me think of depeche mode

I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin', but I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band.

Visually.

The painting "American Gothic" is at the Art Institute of Chicago, btw.

Drums are acoustic

MistaMista1

This is true. You just don't see Jimmy accompanying Bill on their acoustic sets or anything.

I guess that's why they say "solo acoustic sets."

that sort of drum playing can be awkward like yr just their to fill in - remember when they had jimmy playing those tiny bongos? :shame:

The bongos add to the Viewphoria acoustic Cherub Rock!!!

I think I just generally estimate the collective I.Q. of Netphoria as not being able to grasp a more advanced linguistic concept such as sarcasm or irony. What's up with all the comedians on a message board, anyway? Nothing worse than failed attempts at humor.

Correction: Chamberlin played bongos on Mayonaise. He plays a three piece drum set (a ride cymbal, kick drum, and a snare) with brushes on Cherub Rock. I imagine he'll go with something similar on this EP, although we've heard him play soft enough for such music (see Obscured or Farewell and Goodnight.) I think that versatility is what makes Chamberlin such an admirable musician.

You're right. Good memory. Maybe some soft rolls and gallops or whatever like in Whirl.

I think of the djali zwan when I think of billy-acoustic. The drums are subtle and really set off the songs.. I am optimistic for this release. Pony Express is still up there in the upper eschelon of bc songs for me. Completely sublime.

I suppose there's no hope of a vinyl release....
