i've been listening to finelines a lot lately. this has still got to be one of the best rock records to come out since sp broke up. my only criticisms are that its a bit overlong for a debut at 16 tracks and that the shoegazey production tends to make it sound too soft- there's some really high-octane shit here but even the heaviest, most urgent stuff sounds mellow. fantastic album though- a dystopian update of the bends.

I agree.

It's a shame it's taken them like 6 years to put out something new.

If anything its a utopian update of the bends. I have no remark to make upon the quality of this album.

It is a great album, and though I am able to appreciate some of the criticisms against it I still say it is the more original of alternative rock to come out in a while. As I said before though, I actually prefer to consider it a double album with Between the lines because that 2nd cd seems to enhance and dig deeper into the bands potential and creative scope (the quality never faltering just broadening the bands spectrum), while also adopting a more downbeat approach.

So have you actually listened to Between the lines yet? Save a cover (madonna's oh father) and 3 live performances of Finelines songs which are performed differently anyway it is practically another album. It is essential imo if you like Finelines.

Edit: Ok scratch that, checking up like 4 of the other songs are actually covers, hadn't noticed that before. Listening to the originals though they are done justice, kinda weird to find out they are covers though, only one really sounds out of place on the album. Doesn't really contradict the prior statement though, there is still 11 songs of the bands there that add to the complete picture and it is testament to them that the covers just sit in there and sound their own within the album.

Also, Finelines was out before Machina.

My mind keeps telling me it came out in 1999, but yeah it's 2001. Have you listened to BTL or is there some reason you say nothing when I ask that? I wouldn't bring it up if it weren't for the fact that everyone says nothing about it when the quality is that of Finelines. I have no idea why it is disregarded, we are talking what Pisces Iscariot is to the Pumpkins!

oh really, to be honest i wasn't exactly aware that btl is a different record altogether, i thought it was just an alternate title to finelines. i guess i'll check it out though!
