View Full Version : Baby GAP loves Smashing Pumpkins...Christmas Time
muzzled4life 12-02-2007, 02:46 PM Yes, in the store, on Baby Gap/GapKids soundtrack for the holiday is "Christmas Time" from the Pumpkins. I almost forgot about that song, its actually not that bad, given the season. Also, in the Fall Gap adult side had "That's the Way (My Love is)." Oh their sneaky tactics to push cableknit sweaters.
stripes 12-02-2007, 02:49 PM I've heard TTW
nofix 12-02-2007, 03:52 PM they play christmas time in a lot of shopping mall stores. i heard it at penny's last year. and i've heard it at the gap too.
Skradgee 12-02-2007, 03:55 PM heard it in Victoria's Secret last week. ooh la la.
smashing0 12-02-2007, 04:07 PM heard it in Victoria's Secret last week. ooh la la.

MonkeyMan 12-02-2007, 04:39 PM I've heard Christmastime in both JC Penneys and Eddie Bauer.
AnnMarie727 12-02-2007, 05:11 PM I hear Christmastime being played in the mall every year. It's awesome. How cute though in the baby gap :) !
christmastime is a wonderful song, easily as timeless as any traditional christmas song. terribly underrated. not many artists could do a really inspired christmas song but this is definitely one of them.

muzzled4life 12-02-2007, 06:03 PM link please?
Unfortunately, I work at the Gap, so thats how I know they are playing these songs, its just a part time job through college so I get cheap clothing and extra beer money. Hearing Christmas Time though made my day at work, provided sanity while I fold little pink dresses...otherwise BabyGap is torture for a 21 year old male to work at...i much prefer working the adult side...more attractive people on that end.

There are fans in Houston, then I guess.
This makes me feel bad for Iha, though...
JRiordan 12-02-2007, 10:33 PM On the Bengals @ Steelers game tonight, they played 1979 before one of the commercials
Then a few minutes later Al Michaels said something about "cleanliness is godliness" as QB Ben Roethlisberger was trying to dry his hands on his jersey (it's pouring rain n Pittsburgh)

Corgan Rules 12-02-2007, 11:52 PM christmastime is a wonderful song, easily as timeless as any traditional christmas song. terribly underrated. not many artists could do a really inspired christmas song but this is definitely one of them.
Agreed! It's my favorite Christmas song ever....or at least top 3 or so. I actually like the song, whether it's Christmas or not....
drowningspider 12-03-2007, 07:59 PM I got really excited the first time I heard Christmastime played at the Mall of America back when I lived in Minnesota. My boyfriend, who was with me at the time, had never heard Smashing Pumpkins before and gave me a really weird look when I said "Oh my God, they're playing my favorite band!" I guess Christmastime isn't really the best introduction to their work...
i_adore_adore 12-03-2007, 08:10 PM I guess Christmastime isn't really the best introduction to their work...
nonsense!
drowningspider 12-03-2007, 08:16 PM heh, let me clarify. Christmastime isn't the best introduction to their work when trying to impress your rocker boyfriend with your amazing taste in music.
i_adore_adore 12-03-2007, 08:41 PM Like I said, I don't even like Christmastime. I'd be pretty embarrassed if my friends heard it when I was with them.
But I think it's just me. I don't think Christmastime is a bad Christmas song in reality, but I dunno... for some reason I can't take it seriously as a Christmas song. For one thing, all I can think about is that ridiculous video (you know the one, where the one kid gets MSOTS and gets all depressed...), and for another thing, Billy doesn't seem like the type of person to enjoy Christmas. I know that's a horrible thing to say, and it makes it look like I buy into the whole "depressed rocker" steryotype, but for some reason... I just can't listen to Christmastime without cringing.

Here here ! I was very dissapointed when i first heard this song. I bought the CD thinking Sp would do some rocked out alt X mass song and instead it's pretty much solo Billy thinking he is Bing Crosby.
skipgo 12-04-2007, 05:36 PM Billy Corgan/Bing Crosby? hm...
i like this song; i made a mix of christmas songs for my kid and put this on there. As a pumpkins song it's not that great, but it's a good christmas tune; it depends on your perspective I guess.

I guess i was just expecting something else. It's very pleasant and full of holiday cheer and all that.
i_adore_adore 12-04-2007, 07:01 PM isn't that on mashed potatoes? If RSPAA is still down, then I dunno where else you could find it.

This is INSANE!
skipgo 12-04-2007, 07:13 PM yeah, i can see your point anvil hands, it's definitely not what most people would expect from sp, it's something my grandma would like. haha.
hey is there an mp3 of sp playing rudolph floating around somewhere?
stripes 12-04-2007, 08:11 PM I don't think Christmastime is a bad Christmas song in reality.
Okay, so time to cover it and up it on You Tube. Hurry!
you guys clearly don't appreciate what a well-arranged and orchestrated song Christmastime is. for someone without any classical training, billy wrote a marvellous thing here. it might not be an all-time sp classic or whatever but you could not name ONE other rock band/artist capable of writing a christmas song as traditional-sounding or authentic as this. (ed. well, maybe Queen. )it is utterly testament to billy's genius and his sensitivity to musical histrionics, something very few contemporary musicians seem to have without going overboard and writing cheesy shit. just to spite you all i'm going to listen to CT on repeat until i go to bed

Rudolph! (http://www.rspaa.org/rspaa/Miscellaneous/Mashed%20Potatoes/MP05%20-%2007%20-%20Rudolph%20The%20Red-Nosed%20Reindeer%20%28Live%2093%29.mp3)
I actually had TSP version of Rudolph a long time before I found Mashed Potatoes--I had it on one of those crazy old bootleg CDs (http://www.ognetty.com/PumpkinArt/bootlegs/SmashingThePuppets.htm) I bought as a teenager, before the internet became famous for stealing things. I kind of miss bootleg CDs. They had the best covers ever.
astrosfan719 12-04-2007, 09:47 PM Christmastime is badass and a great christmas song. Soon to be classic.

how are those lines worse than the lyrics to any other christmas song? virtually all xmas songs are literal like that.

i commend this post but you're still going in the grinder for ragging on teitbite
BlissedandGone2 12-05-2007, 12:49 AM christmas time is not only a great christmas song, but also a great pumpkins song and great song in general.

So what! like that's an excuse for writing MORE crappy lyrics? You just said something about how he didn't sound trite... all I said was that he DOES sound trite. Nothing about comparing Christmastime to other Christmas songs.

i appreciate it; i don't doubt for a second that billy is a genius. it's the reason i'm here talking about him everyday.
i like you isle. you're very passionate about your opinions, even when you're completely obnoxious about it. (not that you're being obnoxious now, but you know what i mean). I respect that.
i_adore_adore 12-05-2007, 09:34 PM skipgo, you like everyone, don't you? You even say Esty's intelligent.
And that's why I like YOU.
Though I still don't like Christmastime. For the record, it really has nothing to do with the song (even though the lyrics ARE cheesey....) It has more to do with me not being able to see Billy Corgan writing it. Sure, logically that would add to my admiration for him. But I guess I'm not a very logical person...
skipgo 12-05-2007, 09:48 PM i like most people here. there are a few who i think are worthless, but there's no need to name names, it doesn't matter. There are some people who stand out for me though, and I like to let them know. :)
remember when i did that "females of the sp board" thread.

what if she gives you one but it really sucks
drowningspider 12-10-2007, 05:29 AM It has more to do with me not being able to see Billy Corgan writing it.
I can empathize with this. What strikes me most about Christmastime is the fact it's written from the point of view from a parent, which seems like a really odd choice, considering all the childhood angst that was so prevalent in the work leading up to this (and the fact that Billy doesn't have any kids). I've begun to feel a little weird and sad when I listen to it because it makes me wonder if he thought he would have a family of his own by now.
