View Full Version : So the UK Immigration Office just told me that I'm a British Citizen

I am confused. They said that because my father's a citizen, was married to my mom before I was born and despite having me in the US, that I am "automatically British and entitled to a British passport."

This does not strike me as correct - but maybe I'm just expecting things to be more difficult here. Anyway, if this lady is right - crikey moses!

And it might get me a break on tuition, which is much more important.

Yes, I saw that there is a residency break. But I have been advised that there are some additional fees that apply to international students as well.

You mean one of your parents is British by birth? I think that would make you a citizen. Enjoy your purple passport!

Also socialism

yup, in the UK no less. I'm going to finish my research on the roman economy, and hopefully get myself involved in a line of work I enjoy a lot more.

Well, before 1983 it has to be my dad - which it is. I just thought it was a lot more difficult than this.

^ pretty sure they changed that. i think it goes back to the mid-50s now

edit: 1961. you have to register as a british citizen first

i'm a panamanian citizen for the same reason as well. apparently, since my dad is panamanian, my siblings and i can claim citizenship as well as all of our children, indefinitely

They have some whacked out nationality laws like that in Denmark too. It's really confusing and has to do with where your parents are born and where their parents were born...I don't get it.

c-dogg, is your maternal parental unit also a briton?

maybe it's because we fall on different sides of the cutoff birthdate. but i eventually found that i would have a bit of a time getting british subject status but an easier time than most. my father was born there but married here.

Awesome. If I found out I was British, I'd move there.

High taxes, yes... but it's such a better country than the United States. We could learn so much from their government and how it operates.

no. Sounds like the same deal. My mom is a US citizen and they were married here.

My dad also served in the military.

I have a similar situation, my father is uk military, while my mother is German I was told ( i have no idea if this is true for dual nationalities) that if I wanted German citizenship I would need to do national service in Germany. This seems like abit of a bummer. Anyway welcome to the UK club.

i think ´they can get you only until 27. i had a class-mate who had triple nationality (don't ask me how, he was german, austrian and swiss) and he couldn't visit germany between the age of 18 and 27, because they cold have arrested him and put him into service or something like that. he got the citizenship long before he turne 18 though

Yeah. :)

The only time libertarianism has caused me problems was when I was arguing with a guy in Uttoxeter about gun rights. Guy was a conservative and was lamenting the "poor policing" to which I presented the case for concealed carry. I think he thought that I was crazy.

No, because I didn't mention it to this lady. But I think it does have some effect if you have a borderline case. I think I have a rather preferred status.
