I would have to take off Toy Story 2, braveheart, The Matrix, and The Sixth Sense. Those were all enjoyable movies, but there were others more noteworthy than these...

i saw fight club for the first time a week or two ago. it was midnight - 2am and i was in the social lounge and right at the end these two idiots came in to play beer pong, which is annoying 'cause the last 5 minutes were by far the best part (<3 that pixies song and the way it paralleled with the buildings falling down . . . yeah . . . it was just very propogandically powerful or whatever that oy) but yeah. i can see. i mean i didn't think it was so wonderful but it may have to do with i'm not part of that scene -- the disillusioned male or whatever. but. what was my point? yeah the ending was good. heh.

IT WAS NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR FOR CHRIST'S SAKE SO OBVIOUSLY SOME PEOPLE AGREE WITH ME THAT IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE, HOLY SHIT. I AM NOT GOING TO ARGUE WITH YOU ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT BABE WAS GOOD. BABE 2 WAS EVEN BETTER HOWEVER BUT THAT'S ANOTHER MATTER. IT'S JUST LIKE YOU TO COME IN AND PULL A BRENDAN SWEENEY. JESUS CHRIST.

remember these are ranked by imdb users.
agree with the good movies wrong order comment.

although Number One is correct. Shawshank should have won best picture. and where is gump? certianly it was an entertaining movie and hanks was very deserving of the best actor, but the flick should not have garnerd a best picture

and i don't see what the hell people saw in the sixth sense. i descent movie i suppose, but very predictable after all the reviews dared me not to guess the surprise ending. i can't believe this was even nominated for best picture.

no just check out the site. there is a list of the 250 greatest films as voted on by the users. it has the name of the movie and the rating out of 10 as voted by the users. this rating is derived some crazy mathematical equation they use. a film has to have a certain number of votes and what not. i'm assuming the list in here is just the films from the 90's plucked out of the big list

here is the full list

http://us.imdb.com/top_250_films

it explains it all at the bottom

oh. it's just like rotten tomatoes or whatever. it wasn't an official vote i think they were just compiling ratings that users have given movies over the years. like when a user reviews a movie they have to rate it. right? i think that's what it is. i'm pretty sure.

Top 100 movies of all time. This list was compiled by critics, directors, sreenwriters, actors...

1 Shawshank Redemption, The (1994)

100 years from now people will still be talking about this movie (and probably watching it on TNT every other day). It's amazing it didn't get the recognition it deserved back when it came out. I don't remember if it was up for an Oscar against Philadelphia or Forrest Gump, but who remembers either of those today as a "best picture"? They're not even on this list.

2 Schindler's List (1993)
3 Usual Suspects, The (1995)
4 Pulp Fiction (1994)
5 Silence of the Lambs, The (1991)

A decent top 5. My opinion may put American Beauty in there... I'd probably take out *gasp* Schindler's List to make room.

6 Goodfellas (1990)

Never seen it. I haven't seen The Godfather trilogy either. :/

7 American Beauty (1999)

See above.

8 Matrix, The (1999)

Um... no.

9 L.A. Confidential (1997)

Like Shawshank, highly underrated. I don't know that time will bless it like it has Shawshank, however.

10 Fight Club (1999)
11 Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Leaving these off would have been a sin.

12 Vita è bella, La (1997)

Roberto Benigni can suck it.

13 Se7en (1995)

A surprise entrant I think, but welcome.

14 American History X (1998)
15 Léon (1994)

Haven't seen either of these. Is the Professional really that good?

16 Toy Story 2 (1999)

NO. Toy Story- definitely. This- hell no.

17 Sixth Sense, The (1999)

Ten years from now I don't think this will be on the list.

18 Reservoir Dogs (1992)

It's great, but not *that* great.

19 Braveheart (1995)

Still one of my favorites of all time. But I can see why others wouldn't want it on here.

20 Fargo (1996)

I really need to see it again.

21 Lola rennt (1998)

Never seen it.

22 Straight Story, The (1999)

If this is on here, I'd make a case for The Iron Giant.

23 Festen (1998)

?

24 Mononoke Hime (1997)

I haven't seen it, but I'm curious about it. I haven't heard one bad thing about it.

25 Green Mile, The (1999)

No.

Where's The Lion King? Terminator 2? I suppose I'd throw Forrest Gump on there... Hoop Dreams is excellent. That's all I can think of... for now.

I've seen these and agree they are all great but they are sort of out of order. The Matrix better than Se7en? That is one of the many things I disagree with. They all belong there but the only one I agree with is the Shawshank Redemption, it's a long one but it is the best movie on that list. "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin." What agreat line in a movie full of them.

Hey, it's just a list of things that came to mind. Certainly not exhaustive or ultimately authoritative. But just some things that weren't up there that maybe had at least some merit being there.

The main problem with anything involving recent culture is that people tend to flock to whatever they're most recently impressed with. The top 25 films of the 1930s or 1960s would be much more diverse and respectable. I'd assume that as time passes on, the IMDb list will slowly normalize itself. Just like all the recent movies that make it to the top 250 list, most of them do drop out over time. People won't be watching Braveheart 20 years from now and give it props anything like what it gets now.

I mean, isn't that technically the definition of a classic? What lasts beyond the immediate consumption of a culture? Yet another can of worms I'm opening there, probably...
