Beautiful is a really interesting, cool sounding song. I don't know what to label it, exactly, but I wish the Pumpkins would have done an entire album or at least some more songs like it. I really love the bass, and the song's beat, it's probably the closest to trip-hop the Pumpkins ever attempted. Also, the vocals and melody are quite nice.


It's an unusual song. They were thinking outside of their normal comfort-zone, and I'm glad they did. Does anyone else share a special fondness for this tune, or does anyone think it is crappy? I'd like to hear your opinions.

It is a fantastic song but I wouldn't call it trip hop. Songs like this and Lily, By Starlight are what make MCIS so great. As polarizing as many of the songs are from each other, they all somehow work and make sense together. The last 5 of Dusk to Dawn sound like they were created in another time. Any band I have seen attempt anything as grand comes off as contrived and forced. Ridiculous as songs like Beautiful seem, I believe the place where they are coming from.

It isn't true trip hop for several reasons, I guess, but the beat and the use of bass at the first of the song sound very near to it. It's such an original sounding song, and the emotional tone of it is complex. I freaking love it.

if i had more time to write I'd talk more about it, but fortunately it's almost time to leave work and go home for the weekend (woohoo!) anyway, I too love this song, as well as the songs mentioned by silverfrick. SP certainly had something special going on in the early to mid 90s, everything they touched turned to gold. These songs are no exception to that.

For a while the only reason I liked "Beautiful" was because I could hear D'arcy singing so clearly (I've always been fond of D'arcy's voice), but within the past year I've grown to appreciate it much much more. I freakin' love the outro. It sounds so dreamy, and it's just perfect. I was always glad it was there, but never crazy about listening to it. Like... Mellon Collie just seems absolutely flawless the way it is. Even though I sometimes skip over songs like "We Only Come out at Night" or "Cupid de Locke," ya know, the weird ones, I would never ever take them off of Mellon Collie. They're what make the album so special.

seriously. I'm listening to it right now, on XYU. Every single song on MCIS is gold.

The vocals are really well executed in this song.

I would personally say that the track list from X.Y.U. on is flawless, but I truly think that Beautiful is one of the best things the band ever made.

1. you can look at the singles. i know this might seem dumb, but if you look at each individually and look at the musical range between all of them, its really amazing. to create an album with such amazing and popular songs as the singles and at the same time have them be so different, youve created an album of epic preportions.
2. look at the bsides and the album together (tafh). that body of work is ridiculously something something. i cant think of words right now. im drunk and getting more drunk as i write this.
3. look at teh oddballs, we only come out at night, beautiful, lily, by starlight, all those guys and then compare them with the heavy tracks and the epic tracks and all the rest of tracks. fuckin a thats amazing.

Beautiful is my absolute favorite pumpkins song! Every part of it is amazing! Awesome lyrics and such emotional singing.

I agree, this is one of the best moments on Mellon Collie. I remember getting the guitar/piano book for MCIS shortly after starting to learn guitar (I was 11), looking for this riff second, right after the Ruby intro/verse riff. It's really... well... beautiful.

I'm surprised. When I heard "Daydream" first, I though "that is woeful and she can't sing", but her performance on "Beautiful" almost redeemed her, I have to say.

No... but for some reason some songs just seem to "go" together. I can't really explain it, and maybe other people DO perform rituals between each section. As for me, though, I've always thought of Mellon Collie in little groups of songs.

I guess the only real groups I have thought of are #10-#14 on Twilight to Starlight: We Only Come Out at Night to Farewell and Goodnight, and to some extent each of the first 2 pairs of songs (WBFTT/Bodies and 33/In the Arms)
