View Full Version : Zeitgeist Elimination Challenge (Round 6)

davin
10-02-2007, 10:26 PM
ok people, lets keep the level of participation up.

you remember how this works. you pick the song you like on zeitgeist THE LEAST of the remaining choices, and every 5 days (or so) we'll start a new thread/poll with the least liked song removed....and we'll do this until we're down to a champion.

Poll limit is 12 so we started with the standard album tracks only. Poll is PUBLIC and will be open 6 days (we'll reduce further if voting drops off sooner).

Round 1 loser was Pomp & Circumstances
Round 2 loser was For God & Country
Round 3 losers (due to a tie) were (Come On) Let's Go and Neverlost
Round 4 loser was Starz
Round 5 loser was Thats the Way (My Love Is)

:smoke: :p  :)   ;) :noway: :D :erm: :(  :o  :O  :unhappy: :eyesp:

7 Shades of Black is absotively posolutely the BEST song on the entire album. I can listen to it 100 times and on the 101st time still be thinking it's awesome.

The rest of my votes will be something like:

1. United States
2. Tarantula
3. Bring the Light
4. Doomsday Clock
5. Bleeding the Orchid

Leaving the wonderful 7 shades.

Goddamnit. I've been voting for United States since round 2 or 3. How can it still be there while undeniably great songs like TTW and 7 Shades get bunches of votes? TTW and 7 Shades are good but they're no SIYL or AOI. Definitely not. And GatGC is good but its no United States.

So I dont agree with your analogy. But I definitely think 7 Shades of Black is one of the best songs on the album. I love the booty-shaking "you dont want me no mo" part and the chorus is really kickass- i love the lead guitar part under "anyone at all" - so Pumpkinsy!

I like "Bleeding" because it has a goth doom and gloom vibe. That's always been a part of SP's sound and its a part of the band's style. HOWEVER, next round my vote is going to go for "Bleeding" because it seems to be leading the votes behind US. So maybe US will scrape through this round (I'm guessing "7 Shades" will get the boot) and then the votes of the majority turns towards the next least-popular song. Sure, US has always been high up there, but I think the majority will then move onto the next one, excluding United States, because the only people who vote for United to be voted off are a consolidated bunch of goddamn crackpots who keep voting for the same thing. Think people who vote for the NDP or Ralph Nader. They'll always be there, causing a ruckus, but the true public consciousness will win out.

Why all this very convoluted strategic voting? Because "United States" is the best goddamn song on the album, that's why!!!!!

As much as it pains me, I had to go with United States. The Zeitgeist version of it is just too poor to make the grade. I listen to bootlegs of this constantly though. When it rocks it really fucking rocks. The ending riffs live are superb, but the echo vocal effects and the middle- section wankery just kills the studio version.

It's a shame, really. This could've easily been the best song in Zeitgeist and on par with old epic hard-hitters such as Aeroplane Flies High.

???
10-03-2007, 06:21 AM
yeah 7 shades is the best song purely because its got that edge and attitude that sp's older hard songs had, like zero and teitbite. that edge is absolutely lacking anywhere else on zg. also the music is pretty cool and different, i'd say its certainly the least generic song on the record.

Its supposed to be a relative comparison. I wasn't really trying to make direct comparisons and say 7 Shades is as good as AOI, or that TTW is as good as SIYL (though its very close in the latter case). I'm just saying that that within Machina itself, AOI and SIYL are much better songs than GATGC, so it'd be strange to see those songs be eliminated in a similar Machina themed challenge while GATGC remained. And in my opinion, 7SOB and TTW (and Starz, and (Come On) Let's Go! and For God and Country...etc.) are much better songs than United States in much the same way AOI and SIYL are better than Glass and the Ghost Children.

Sorry, TTW is nowhere NEAR as good as SIYL. The latter has one of Corgan's finest, most passionate vocal deliveries, the former is one of his flattest! I do like TTW, but it's child's play compared to the power of SIYL. Plus, dueling ebow vs octave chord solo!

I'm going to work for probably half a day, it's a small business that I run so I can basically do what I want... but I do need to show up and get some shit done (plus I need money) :/ I feel kinda shitty this morning but not too bad... also taking 2 antibiotics and steroids, they make me tired and nauseous.

So glad to be out of the hospital...

And I find United States to be more enjoyable than 7 Shades of Black, so I voted for 7 Shades. That "either or" line is sooo awkward.

So all those really really weird sounding echoes are LESS awkward??? Nope.

When that part of U.S. happens, and I'm driving down the street listening to music, if I don't feel like skipping the track, I roll my windows up and install sound insulation in my vehicle's walls to save the ears of other drivers so that I don't cause an accident.

When 7SoB plays, I mount external speakers on my hood, trunk, tires, everywhere, and the whole world comes to peace.

The very last one sounds like the rest, where it's as if Billy has attained some mental disability and it has transferred into his echo effect.

7 Shades of Black is one of the best songs on that whole album. Bleeding the Orchid, now there's a rotting piece of shit song that doesn't deserve one minute of my time. Bleeding the Orchid is like a really gay version The Crying Tree of Mercury, but with less fullness. I fart in the general direction of Gaying the Orchid.

The problem with Shades and Orchid (and others, but these two especially), is that they are blatent retreads. They are meant to sound like MCIS and SD era pumpkins, and they do... but they don't match the quality. That's just what Billy wanted to do, I don't like it either. They are still pretty good songs, but lack the originality that SP usually brings with every album.
And the US backing vocals would have been okay if there was like one echo or something, at the misunderstood part. Being everywhere, they are really :erm: inducing. I still like US a lot though, at least in comparison with the rest of the album.
I like some of the background vocals a lot, but US and the beginning of Starz are so bad I'm kinda embarressed when they come on while I'm in the car with someone.

i never thought us would get so many votes- but the 'guitar noises' in the middle of the song are annoying to a lot of people though. its tradition for them to put a long, "epic-y" song on their albums, maybe that's it's purpose. it's no silverfuck, but i like it a lot. it's peak is great, the crunching guitar sound is what i love about this band.

Not necessarily. All the people who voted for United States will vote for a different song next time, if a majority of them vote for any other song, then THAT song will be removed.

As for 7 Shades of Black sounding like an attempt at being a song from MCIS, and it certainly has tones of Bodies and the like in it, a given, I have to disagree that it's an attempt at being another song, rather the end result is that it happens to sound like a song from MCIS. You see, since Corgan's writing these songs they're all coming from the same place. So when he reaches to write another song, it's a reflection of himself (aww), and so when he writes songs of COURSE some are going to sound similar because the same person is writing them. It's like with ZWAN and how he had to purposely write songs differently because the other gaylords in the band were complaining about how the songs sounded like SP songs. Of course they're going to sound like SP songs, he wrote nearly everything that came out of SP, so logically many SP songs will sound similar. I don't hear 1 song from Billy, then another and assume he tried to make it sound like that other song so much as he was feeling the same way, or pulling from the same emotional pool to create the song. Songs of his sounding similar I don't consider attempts to sound like other songs. That is an externality of the same person writing the songs. He's not trying to recreate MCIS, if anything he's only proven he wants to go forward and never look back (Adore didn't sound like MCIS, did it?). He's trying to push his band forward so he can look like he's dictating the music world, which is something he used to be able to do quite well. Now it's a different story, but he wants to be in the front of the rock scene, a leader not a follower. Thus, he's not trying to write songs that sound similar, it just happens that since Billy = Billy that Billy songs = Billy songs will be a potential outcome.

Concerning Tarantula, I think it hasn't gotten many votes because no one considers it a threat to whatever song they want to win. Also, I think it's a song most are apathetic about. Few want it to win the elimination, but also few hate it so much that they feel the need to vote if off now.

And of course, it's been around the longest and everyone has gotten used to it. We've either learned to appreciate the parts we didn't like before, or we simply can't hear the flaws anymore.

I totally agree with you... but with 7 shades in particular, BC has even said he got into his '96 persona (or something like that) to pull out the song. Normally Billy tries to challenge himself; they did experiment with this album a little (vocals), but they obviously tried to sound like themselves too. To use your example, Adore, BC totally changed directions (it was forced because of the JC issues, but I think either way the album would have been radically different in some way).

I still enjoy Zeitgeist. It's okay that 7 shades sounds like it could have been on MCIS... it would bother me if the whole album sounded like MCIS or SD, but it's just certain songs and aspects, not the whole thing. If SP didn't sound like SP, something would be wrong... but SP sounds like a lot of different things at different times, that's one of the great things about the band.

I'm a songwriter myself and have a style of my own which is much more boxed in than Billy's. The variance he has in his catalogue is nothing short of amazing.
