I wasn't expecting much, but this is a thoroughly solid album. Much better than In Your Honor. I was expecting more over the top screamy rock songs, but this album actually leans in the songwriting direction. A lot of songs have acoustic guitar in them and then become harder towards the end. The Pretender is by leaps and bounds the heaviest song on the album and sounds out of place compared with the other songs. The album sort of pulls a "There is Nothing Left to Lose" and gets softer as it rolls on. The last track, Home, is mainly just piano and vocals. Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners is the first instrumental track they've ever put on an album. This album also has more lead guitar than I can ever recall being on a Foo Fighters record. My favorite track upon 2 listens is Long Road to Ruin, which I think is easily one of the best songs Grohl has ever written.

Final thoughts: Not the Colour and the Shape or self titled, but a very good rock record, very mature and emotional. Dynamic, well rounded, the most diverse Foos album. They cover every sound they've done thus far except the thrashy crunch the self titled record is made up of. If you don't like the Foo Fighters this album won't change your mind. If you like the Foos, this is their best album this century.

Its a lot better than their last two. In Your Honor and One by One were terrible except for a few songs. I'd say its their 4th best after the first 3.

I do not understand how anyone could prefer In Your Honor to this album unless you only listened to the acoustic side. Most of the electric side was ridiculously large, overblown screaming fits.

The Kaki King song is pretty much just cool fingerpicking. All instrumental.

And it's definately NOT cookie cutter Foo Fighters. It's not a big step in a new direction, but this is the most varied album they've done and the songs are mostly pretty creative and listenable. The Pretender is the most "cookie cutter" track on the record.

Too bad the band's kinda gone downhill lately studio-wise. There Is Nothing Left To Lose was their last great effort, I think. This new album is pretty boring and was quite hard for me to sit through on the first listen. I'd still love to see them live, though.

There's such a thing as too much. Same reason Zeitgeist gets old. Too much loud shit. With every song trying to outdo the last, it just gets boring after awhile.

A live show is totally different. The Foos put on the best concert I have ever seen.

YOOR TEH PRETENDER I WILL NEVA SURRENDER!

This album is what I was expecting from In Your Honor - and aside from a few great tracks, IYH was generally disappointing.

My initial impressions are that I like this CD - I actually like the pretender as well. I think like most Foo works since the Color and The Shape, it sounds "deliberate" - like they figure what kind of "style" they want on an album and sort of over-do it, taking the "natural" feelings out of the songs.

I really don't care for "Let It Die." It's like they took "still" and rocked the end of it in a really obvious and predictable way. "Long Road to Ruin" also is just pretty bland - sort of the "That's The Way" of this album.

I buy Foos albums more in hope than expectation these days, as soon as Dave Grohl starts shouting i lose interest. Especially when he does it throughout a song, i can take it in small doses. And £40 to see them live these days, no really worth it IMO.

I buy Foos albums.
why on earth would you do this?

i got 3 songs into this new one before deleting it. i still haven't heard in your honor or the one before that and i most likely never will.
the first three songs of this album let me know what i was missing with the last two: nothing.

I used to think Dave Grohl should just shut up and stay behind a drum kit, but even when he's drumming he's an arrogant pain in the ass.
