if you knew anything about pearl jam you'd know that they have a reputation for being an honest, un-pretentious band that provided a huge contrast to cock rock. 'no code' is cock rock and you are not drooling on yourself.

anyway, i think they're mediocre. so thumbs down. eddie vedder's punk speech was great though.

From what I've heard, thumbs up. I really like the image they present. Totally unpretentious. "I am Eddie Vedder and I sing in a rock and roll band. This is how I feel about these issues and this is how I will silently protest." And that's it. So simple. God, I love that.

I love the "their songs sound the same" argument. Maybe the criticism is warranted on Ten, and to a lesser extent on Vs., but after that, it's just complete bullshit. Besides, every single song on Nirvana's Nevermind, or even early Beatles albums, sounds the same, but it's too bad that you couldn't write a song 1/100 as good as the worst songs on there.

At any rate, Pearl Jam is such an unpretentious, earnest, honest rock band with infinite amounts of integrity. Even if you don't like their music, I find it implausible that you would dislike what they stand for if you truly understand it.

Plus, they are flat-out consistently good.

its just a lame argument if you ask me. if you don't like the music, whatever, but the "it all sounds the same" argument just doesn't sit well with me.

First off, thumbs way up for PJ. I've been a huge PJ fan since Ten & have enjoyed every album they have put out so far. Second, I agree totally with raindrops + sunshowers and Ravenguy2000 about the sounds the same argument. Third, Siamese Dreamer please shut the fuck up. I hate even responding to your stupid comments but here it goes. You have know idea what you are even talking about. If you knew anything about Nirvana or PJ you would know that the whole Nirvana vs. PJ feud was hyped by the media. Why should an overhyped feud many years ago be the basis for you not liking a band. Since you are such a baby heres a link for you.

... from the http://www.pearljamnetwork.com/features/faq.shtml#6.5

6.5 What is Pearl Jamís connection with Kurt Cobain?
Cobain was the lead singer of Nirvana, as Iím sure you know, but the media made this big rivalry between PJ and Nirvana. At first Kurt went along with the rivalry openly insulting the band, but he later reconciled and admitted to liking Ed as a friend. The media made the rivalry out to be much more than it was, and there was actually a lot of mutual respect. After Cobain committed suicide Ed was very shaken up, as you could see from the live performances after Cobainís death. There was a period of not knowing if there was a future to Pearl Jam.

I seriously hope that nobody here who says it all sounds the same listens to Weezer, Tool, or The Ramones.

Most Pearl Jam songs have a lot of complexities, and you can't really just sit down, listen to a PJ album and on the first try completely soak it all in, and comprehend it. You have to grow with it and learn with it and get your fingers muddy with the album and go looking for yourself for what you love about it.

Which is why I can't buy 5 CD's a week. Of any artist.

Kurt would have gotten over it. He disliked their debut album, but he was basically mouthing what Mark Arm had been claiming in 1990. Mark Arm got over it, and Kurt would have too.

As far as I'm concerned, Pearl Jam is the best band in the world right now. Better than anyone else currently together. Every one of their albums are brilliant, every one of their songs heartfelt, honest, and passionate. To tell you the truth, I'm a bigger fan of PJ than I am of SP. Are you ready to banish me yet?

they have the heavy-soft dynamics that I like in my favourite bands.
They aren't necessarily as diverse as some of those bands, they rarely change styles for instance.
But they're good at what they do and each album does sound adequately different to the last.

I have a soft spot for ten.<font color=black>

They really aren't anything too spectacular in my opinion....but Ten and Vitalogy are great albums. Vs. and Yield are pretty good too...I don't have No Code.

But I think that Binaural is just awful. Completely unlistenable. I've listened to it once, and I don't think I'll ever listen to it again. And no, it would never grow on me. Don't ask me how I know that...it just wouldn't. I hope their next album is better.

i didnt like Binaural that much either. "insignificance" and "sleight of hand" are the only gems on there. even Stone Gossard said they can do much better than Binaural. he said he wants the next album to have the same energy Temple of the Dog had. whatever that means.

Quite honestly, I only posted this to see a flaming folder icon next to a topic *I* posted.

If you only listen to an album once, really, your opinion is pretty much completely invalid, no matter how much you disliked it the first time.

You just do not understand.

I struggled to get through each song. I wanted desparately to skip each and every song. By far the worst album I've bought in a long, long time. I've disliked other albums on the first listen, and I've given them other chances. Binaural is different. I'd listen to a Blink 182 album twice before I'd listen to this one again.

But just to make you happy, I'll listen to it again tonight and tell you what I think.

Please do...it's one of my favorites. Actually, they're all my favorites, but I worship Binaural.

I like them alright, but I don't own many of their albums.
