I think the first Frogs album (originally only released on vinyl... 1000 copies) is one of the best pop albums I've ever heard... but most people only know their later stuff.

I don't know about five, but I really got into discovering new music when I was looking for "Greatest" lists that included the Pumpkins and a few other bands...essentially someone who liked at least some of the things I like.

All I can say is that it turned me into a real music lover and got me to open my mind to new music. Hope this helps someone else too, even if you only end up discovering one or two new bands.

I really think that both "Murmur" and "Reckoning" by REM are awesome, awesome albums that don't get mentioned very much. Especially their 2nd, "Reckoning"... easily one of my top 5 albums.

The Kinks- Village Green Preservation Society, and the Zombies- Odessey and Oracle are two of the most amazing pop albums of all time. I'd put Village Green above most Beatles albums, myself.

Tall Dwarfs- Hello Cruel World is a home-recording classic that hasn't been heard by nearly enough people. If you like weird, primitivist lo-fi pop, by all means check this one out.

Gary Numan's Pleasure Principle defines 80's synth-pop, and the fact that it contains the song "Cars" means that it's never going to be recognized as a classic, just a kitschy relic.

Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is definately up there. I'm sure most of you would agree that it's generally seen as an obscure underground classic and is given a fair amount of attention, but in my opinion, it's the greatest album of the last 20 years. Until every man, woman, and child in the world owns a copy of this record, it hasn't had enough recognition.

as i'm reading this thread, i'm listening to "sitting still" and "catapult" on murmur and i'll have to agree it's a phenomenal album and it's a definite essential for anyone who likes rock music

Stone Roses debut LP. I never hear anyone post about the Roses, they are the ultimate pop gods, at least to me.Ride "Nowhere" Charlatans "Up To Our Hips" are also good but not essential. R.E.M. Murmur is Definately ESSENTIAL. I have it on vinyl,so tasty.
