Anyone know anyone that had one? I just found out my dad has one. I'm pretty sad right now.

Aw man, sorry to hear that. :(

They thought I had one for a bit there when I started having seizures, but it wasn't. Do they know what kind of tumour it is? What are his options?

the chance of survival is very low i think, it hasn't improved much since the 70's. where is it positioned in the brain, are the cells growing fast?

my parents best friends where a couple and the husband in that couple died from a brain tumor. it was a very nasty thing with changes in personality etc, it grew inwards towards the brainstem.

it really depends - benign/malignant, how big, placement, etc. he can have really good chances.

yeah sure you're right. that's why i was asking about where it was positioned and how fast it was growing etc. generally though i seem to recall that it's pretty bad prognosis, i'll check on that

Aeroplane
08-21-2007, 08:53 PM
i think it's more dependent on malignancy or benign.

I haven't talked directly to my mom yet, I'm scared I'll turn into a blubbering fool, but what kiley told me is that they gave him something to stop the swelling or growth (I don't know) They have to go to nashville to see a specialist to find out if its operable or not.

He was going through some weird emotional shit over the last few months. My mom and me just thought it was a mid-life crisis--guess we were wrong.

i think it's more dependent on malignancy or benign.

i thought growth rate is one factor that is taken into account when you decide if a tumor is benign or malignant. "Benign tumor: a tumor (solid neoplasm) that has self-limiting growth and does not invade other tissues nor metastasize. Usually not cancerous."

dean_r_koontz
08-21-2007, 09:03 PM
"In general, malignant tumors grow faster than benign tumors and are more likely to cause health problems."

toby if i liked you any less i'd totally be going for the john kimble jokes now

but sorry to hear that, sucks dood :(

dean_r_koontz
08-21-2007, 09:04 PM
i also think it would be quite weird if the placement of the tumor didn't have much impact on the danger. if it's positioned in some part of the brain that transits signals from the retina, you might go blind, if it's positioned in a place that takes care of important regulatory functions you'd go dead.

smurfing
08-21-2007, 09:05 PM
if it's going to go tetsuo on him it doesnt really matter whether he goes blind a week before he dies or after

Aw, Toby I'm sorry. I would wait to hear from your family regarding what type of brain tumor it is and what the specialist says before you do anything. Get upset if you want to but do not assume the worst just yet.

I've known someone who had a tumor, but not in their brain. They survived. I hope your dad does, too, Tobes :(

dean_r_koontz
08-21-2007, 09:11 PM
well a tumor that only has a very slow growth or just grows for a bit and then doesn't grow much can still be much more dangerious in one place than another.

The little boy up the street had one when he was born (shortly after?). At one point it got pretty serious and no one really thought he would make it. He is now 5 and perfectly healthy. I hope everything turns out alright for your Dad too.

it's the companies that sell the anti-tumor drugs who have bribed all the worlds scientists and doctors into believing that it exists. it's all in the papers and history of oncology.

He's doing well after the surgery. Up an walking around today, but hasn't ate since tuesday. The initial test on the tumor showed non-cancerous, but the surgeon said it looked malignant to him. Tomorrow they'll know for sure and I'm really hoping for the best. We're driving up on saturday for a wedding so we'll be able to see him this weekend :)

Good news, everyone!

Turns out he has some condition where the tumor was both malignant and begnin and he'll be able to live for years and years. They are going to go ahead and do chemo to make sure they kill all the cells and he'll have to check in with the dr. every 6 months to make sure the tumor isn't coming back and if it does they'll just remove it and go on with his life.
