Wow, he's just cranking them out.

I am still hoping for a Fire Theft reunion but can't complain because i loved his last album and the two shows i saw of him supporting it.

I wouldn't mind terribly if the guy starts playing Sunny Day stuff live like Ken Andrews has been doing with the Failure material...but for now who cares, at least he's still making music.

something tells me you weren't a Sunny Day fan.

oh well, to each his own....though i still think you are exaggerating when you say "shitty". :Skeptical

i never said i don't enjoy them, just that i'm not overly-excited or pumped for the new album.

I'm a huge SDRE fan. I just wish Jeremy Enigk didn't find Jesus.

yea, you know...i've said that about a few too many frontmen of bands i like in the last 10 years... :(

did you like the Fire Theft stuff? i was really lovin' that album and their tour in support of it was truly kickass. i hope all those guys are still on good terms, last i heard they were. a

s much as i respect him for only playign solo material i really think it might soon be time for him to crank out the oldies since he is responsible for writing most of it. as i mentioned above, Ken Andrews did it with his old bands' material and it wasn't "cheap" or "lame" at all -- to be honest if fucking ruled.

anyway, we'll see. i'm just glad the guy is woriking hard because he genuinely was in a great mood and in love with playing his new material the couple times i saw him support World Waits.

i'll stop right here before delving into any wild theories about similarities between BC, KA, and JE....but lets just say I hope he gets back to his roots and starts playing with a band again. Even if its new stuff like Fire Theft, I still think it will rock nicely.

I really enjoyed Fire Theft's album.

Ken Andrews of Failure was fantastic ... He didn't really do much that piqued my interest, like Greg Edwards' Autolux. Autolux pwns. YoTR was pretty good, but Satellites was kind of a bore, imo. On! was about the same. Not nearly as diverse or interesting as Fantastic Planet.

Since we're sort of on the topic, I can't off-hand think of a single frontman that made a terrific solo album that was every bit as good as the original band ... :)

davin

right on man! I love Autolux. they do fucking pwn. Saw them play with Secret Machines @ metro February 2005, as well as open for NIN after that. i love them...and their tshirt designs, heh.

thats why i joked about making that comparison above. SP, Failure and SDRE all are fucking awesome...and the bands since then we're all decent, but not as good as the original (Zwan, YoTR, Fire Theft)...though I have to say Fire Theft > YotR >>>> Zwan, relatively. ;)

You're right about the solo album thing. Same goes for Thom Yorke, Jerry Cantrell.....the list goes on. HOWEVER, of all these solo efforts I must say that Enigk's and Andrew's (including ON here) have been the most enjoyable for me, in terms of how much i actually listen to those albums in comparison to the original material...if anything, just for sake of hearing something new from these artists.

i saw them open for SM in march of 05. they were pretty good. it was a pretty small venue and they had these bleacher-like seats.

anyway, during SM, these two kids were rolling a joint on an Autolux LP.

Hey Davin, you have a really great taste in music. Way to go on the Jeremy Enigk/Ken Andrews comparison. They're similar in the ways they dictate their careers. The Fire Theft was good, but probably not great. I miss the Fugazi influenced sound Jeremy used to churn out on "Diary" and "LP2" (yes, I'm a HUGE SDRE fan and I've met Jeremy on countless occasions). I like his solo stuff, but it would be great if he turned everything up again.

Did you hear Jeremy has indeed been playing SDRE material during his more recent shows?

But you were always one to stay the same girl
I know you want to be the rain
And i know that we could fall in there
For a time and then unfall again

davin seems to be a fan of lyrics that are so disjointed and abstract that in actuallity: it's just crap in the disguise of art.

oh damn! NO i did not hear that! that is awesome!

i saw him at Double Door last year as well as Lolla last summer and he was just playing solo stuff...including a couple "new ones" which i assume will be on the new album.

August 21st is my birthday...so nice little present for me. :)

as far as Ken Andrews and Jeremy go (and even Billy Corgan to some degree) I think one thing that helps me enjoy some of their arguably weaker music is the inherent fact that everything these guys touch/write has a sound that is undeniablly "their style".

thats why i don't expect any band these guys are in to deviate too far from what i already know i like. so i guess that counts as a bias, to some degree...but i don't care. :smoke:

Nothing really. Make sure to pick up their Demonstration EP . Also, UNKLEs latest album, War Stories, has a song mixed by Autolux that is undeniably them. That's a great album as well.

davin

oh sweet, didn't know that about UNKLEs.

do you guys like any of the stuff Ken Andrews produced? Any Starflyer59 fans?

Year Of the Rabbit isn't bad, what ever happened with that?

davin

one album, a couple b-sides, and that's about it. KA went on to solo stuff, producing, etc....the rest of the band went on to The Joy Circuit and released an EP.

Most recently KA has been playing YotR stuff at his live shows.

It's funny because back in February or so, I went to a free Helmet show in Hollywood. It just so happened that Ken Andrews was at the bar as well as Chino Moreno from Deftones on the other side of the room. It was rock stars galore!

But back on the Jeremy side, I've met the guy on numerous occasions and he has to be one of the most respectable musicians I've ever met (as opposed to meeting Billy Corgan three times). The guy actually let me walk with him to Starbucks and have an in depth conversation with me. That night they played "How It Feels to Be Something On" but of course not for the first time. I'm looking forward to Jeremy coming back.

I really liked Return of the Frog Queen, but then he didn't do any solo work for years, and now I haven't listened. I know it's really different. I should pay attention.

sdre were amazing, the fire theft are/were not as good, not really gotten into enigk's solo stuff.

Jeremy has definitely gotten softer since even the Fire Theft. I agree, everything he's done post SDRE hasn't been that exciting, but it's enjoyable. He seems to be over doing the whole piano/acoustic approach. Hopefully with this semi-revival of SDRE he'll step it up a bit and turn the amps up again.

i just posted the new album in the YSI mega thread.

Aeroplane -- you should definitely check out fire theft, i can upload if you want.

jenga66 --when you say "that night they played How It Feels to be Something On" do you mean Jeremy while on his solo tour? when did that happen. that would be AWESOME. its my fav SDRE album.
