Live! From the line @ the fillmore. Te line is crazy today. If you want front row come in 2 hrs and you will be fine. Their are 4 of us here. Yup. I am number 4. It gets worst. No one seems to care....

i feel sorry for you Monte, you have to relive the same boring setlist with minor changes day after day but you are doing everyone a great service by taping and relaying setlists and stuff and i thank you for it. i can only imagine how worse of an experience this residency would have been if we had to wait for each and every song to be played to know the rough order of the setlist here at home.I probably would have totally stopped reading these threads after the 3rd or 4th day.

if they sold tickets the day of the show you four would probably be the only ones who even attend the dumb event. i just cant believe that billy hasn't brought out a single new old tune for you guys (unless i missed something and he did). i mean, he's spending so much time making all these cool acoustic songs and thats great so far they've all be pretty spot on songs but what new songs has he brought to the table in terms of rock music at his ROCK concert? Superchrist?

i know some people on here seem to be preaching the glory of it and how blown away they are but come on, it sounds so bland and boring. The middle part where he sings is pretty cool but the song in general lacks a raw edge and creativity that have been a mark of the residency created songs so far and it sounds to me as little more than a less enthused united states.

If he spends the last few shows working on adding brand new electric songs to the mix and shaping them into being as acceptable as the acoustic ones he could salvage a little bit of what he totally lost over these past few shows.

I care!!! :D
Seeing them at the 7.25 show, although probably the shortest show both length wise and banter wise, was absolutely stellar. In that sense, Im glad I only went to one show. I, too, would be bored if I bought tickets for all 12 shows and there wasnt much variation.
I dont think Ill be looking at setlists once the North American tour starts until the Vancouver show Ill be at...

Hey Monte! This is Ricky, the guy from the first show who tried bringing in a camera, but rejected it as I went in.
Do you know if anyone has any spare tickets? I'd really like to go, and take my girlfriend with me (it's her birthday today). Please let me know if anyone has any. It's a 4 hour drive, there and back, so i'm not exactly sure if I want to take that ride to leave empty handed. Thanks.

yeah, I'm kinda getting to the point where these vids your making, while appreciated, could be sacrificed for your happiness. Just stop going, dude. There are plenty of people who haven't seen ten shows and would really like to go to just one. It's not your "moral obligation" to tape these shows--we'll all live. If it's such a hassle for you to see the Pumpkins live, sell your tickets to someone who wants to be there.

Seriously.

Big Earl

Good choice, Monte. Being up front definitely escalates the excitement of any show.

Tip: Before and after the opening band, and between sets, don't be afraid to sit down in the middle of the crowd. I did this, and it saved my legs and back. What's more, everyone saw me sit down, and followed suit - there were hundreds of sitters, and I started the trend.

Lol, right, I'm the one whining when these guys are sitting in line complaining about "yet another show with the same set list." No, sorry. I'm just ticked off that a bunch of fans who would actually have FUN aren't going to be able to because, for some strange reason, these people who suddenly are totally bored with the shows feel obligated to keep going.

And his SACRIFICE to record for us? Listen, I totally love the fact that he's giving us so many updates, honest I am, and I think it's awesome that he's so loyal with his camera and stuff. But seriously. He's going to see the Smashing Pumpkins and you think that's a sacrifice?

edit: Not JUST referring to Monte, by the way. There are plenty of other people who are MORE vocal about their annoyance with these shows, and yet they keep on goin'.

well...im not saying you have to get there 10 hours early...but for some people it is their first time seeing their favorite band. like myself. i showed up at 8am, met tons of cool people who showed up between 8 and the showtime, saw billy and them walk in, and had a place right next to the stage in front of billy. the wait was worth it. the people i talked to said it was worth it too.

its just something people do. im sure some of you will be waiting in line for 300 on dvd, waited for a harry potter book, wait online for monte or some one to reply to a question you have. everyone does it, just in different ways

if SP is gonna cover a Beatles song... i continually spam billy's SP pm about doing either "tomorrow never knows" or "yer blues". But i agree... "strawberry fields forever" would sound cool by the Pumpkins. For the pumpkins sound... SFF prolly would beat TNN (but TNN is my all time fave song, so)... but i just think (assuming his voice was healthy) billy's vocals would rock if he actually BELTED OUT "yer blues".

O RLY?

Get back to me after you spend $400 on tickets, along with 88 hours of your time minimum, to see the same 3 hour setlist 11 times in a row. Your time must be extremely cheap.

seems like you'd only need to spend 33 hours

i mean jesus fucking christ, why do this if you're just going to complain about it. i'd gladly come out to SF and take your tickets.

I just come back from the show, it was definatly the best one so far.

Here's the real setlist played :
Leaving Lament
Rotten Apples
Peace and Love
99 floors
No Surrender
Today
1979
United States (Jeff's amp breaks down)
Bleeding the Orchid
Lucky 13
Shame
Hummer
Bullet With Butterfly Wings
God and country
Death From Above (BC and Lisa)
By Starlight (first half of it)
To sheila (with Linda Strawberry)
Tonight, Tonight
Tarantula
Starz
Zero
Glass and the Ghostchildren
That's the way (My love Is)
Superchrist
Starla --> Jeff breaks his guitar (the head his broken)
-----------------
Doomsday Clock
Heavy Metal Machine (with a new ending riff)
-----------------
Zeitgeist (Billy and Jimmy on guitar)
Muzzle

The venue lights were on and they started to play the "get the fuck out music" before the second encore.
That was pretty intense, i could see that no one had a clue of what was going on, even the chief of security.
Billy showed up on the balcony, waved at the audience and went back on stage.

Fucking awesome night !!!

Have a good flight home Eric, Kiko and Davin !!

This show proves there is still some absurd fun to be found, at the Fillmore even. Yet... they can't keep playing the same setlist for the rest of the year. If we don't hear some REALLY classic tunes by the new year, then there's reason to give up and just keep spinning our old SP albums as we would have anyway, as if the band had never reformed.

All in all, I'm still happy to be listening to the new shows.

The show was amazing to say the least. They all looked like they were having a lot of fun, even with the tech issues. Unfortunately, I missed Zeitgeist and Muzzle because (as with some other members of the audiance) when the house lights come on and the get out music starts, usually that means a band's done for the night.... I guess not. I'm not complaining though - even with missing the last encore it was a great show. I would have been pissed if I missed Silverfuck and Gossamer though, I would have loved to see/hear those songs in person. I hope Monte or the guy sitting next to me on the balcony got some good shots of Jeff throwing his guitar, that was awesome! It seemed the issues with his amp started early on in the show even before Lucky 13. He kept going back to the side of the stage to see what was going on, if I remember right it started during United States, but that's what I caught. Also, Billy fucked up the words on God and Country and stopped the song for a brief moment. On a side note - I could swear Dennis Miller was in the audience. He (or a guy who looks just like him) was in the balcony against the wall where the soundboard is to the right. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks for the advice earlier Monte. BTW - do you get, "You look like Milhouse" from people a lot?

Their were cameras everywhere that is why billy was in a good mode.
Talked to linda after the show. She was walking down the street behind me. She just swinged by to hang out and billy asked her to sing.
She siad the By Starlight thing was "on the fly". (I will post video later)
When lisa came out she yelled to us "goodbye evryone"
Jeff came out and got a big shoot. I started to talk to him and told him, you can always break the amp on Monday. He was just all smiles & laughs about it.
Jimmy came out and waved and I yelled nice guitar work! Where he pointed to the crowd and said thank you.
Ok after the sp show billy came out and didn't seem to want to talk to us at 1st then came over anyways. I told him thanks for the "by starlight" it blew me away. To which he gave me kind of an odd look, then a girl who came from europe who was 1st in line was able to say thank you to billy for writting her a get well card when she was in the hospital w/ cancer. Billy asked if she was doing ok now. Someone asked if his wife could get a pic w/ him which he as always said no to. Very polietly though. Said something close to the effect that he had to say no to everyone. Then I asked the epic question of how his health was and the epic answer of "my health is sh**" so congrats to him to come over.
He then went back to his car where he gave Linda a hug at which pt I looked away so not to be rude. And that was it

I am so sleepy....

that girl with cancer was from sweden i believe. at the july 22nd show i was in line with a girl named emily who gave an interview with a guy doing the zeitgeist dvd. they exchanged information after emily told him her friend was coming that had cancer and got a card from billy in the mail. thats awesome he did that in the first place, and even cooler she got to come out and meet him.

why do this if you're just going to complain about it. i'd gladly come out to SF and take your tickets.

i feel i should go because they are my fav band. worst though is that i do feel a little misled to believe we would hear 1 different old song that they hadn't played else where or the night before :(

i recall billy posting

our stated hope for playing so many shows in a fixed locale is to foster an environment of creativity, risk taking, and mutual community...to attempt to find some new forms (musically and aesthetically) that will point us future forward...this means playing songs not yet written, digging thru some forgotten ones, and a whole lot of rehearsing during the days ahead so the nights will be filled with chance..

so he has played DFA a number of times, and wrote a few other songs. along with the one nite where he played translucent here in SF. along w/ our by starlight intro to, to sheila.

But i was expecting something along the line of at least 1 old song from the past a nite like it seem to be the case in asheville. first few shows.

digging thru some forgotten

obviously they must be practicing some other songs during their 4 hr sound check / rehearsal. But we just never really hear anything new.

it is almost always the same set list just new order. I feel as if i went to just the ones where i was able to buy tickets for thus far i would of seen all the songs including the new ones. the next 3 tickets were from trades. so we will see.

I hear exactly what you're saying Monte. And its funny that we still see the Asheville shows as "superior"...but if you look at the setlists now, in retrospect, they arent any different really. There are only 5 songs from the Orange Peel they havent played at the Fillmore, whereas there's 8 Fillmore-only songs. The Asheville setlists were so impressive because they saw the introduction of stuff like Fuck You, TAFH, Starla, etc. But ya, its funny to go back now and see how the Asheville setlists all blend in now.

I do have to say that I got tickets for the residencies, coming all the way from Vancouver BC, because of the way it was promoted, but I also dont think anyone expected the band to get semi-bored with SF. In the end, it was an AWESOME show, and only time will tell how unique these residencies really were.

that was him.

i've never seen a more worthless "musician" that linda strawberry.
nobody cheered for her that i could tell. i heard more than a few groans...including my own "UGH" of power.
she sang all of 6 words the whole song, and had no business being out there.
get the fuck off the stage.

that being said, i'll give her credit for clapping along with everyone else (all 50% of the crown that was left at the end), and possibly helping getting BC&JC back out on stage...though I think in the end, they came back out b/c it would look good on the dvd---with a selective angle.

i'd also like to say the people working at the fillmore are excellent. i had tickets for the 27th, fucked up, and showed up last night instead. they gave me a pair of tickets anyhow...making the flight from pittsburgh to san fran worthwhile.
it was my 6th and final show of these residencies, and i frankly appreciate the variety they've shown so far.

i'd love to see frail&B, mayonnaise, spiteface, etc....but hearing 4 songs i've never heard before by my favorite band in one night is incredible....i think we're spoiled sometimes, and need to appreciate what we're given, instead of always asking for more.

07-31-2007, 03:40 AM
...it was fucking awesome. the band has become much tighter since paris...and i think its mostly noticeable during tarantula, united states, and doomsday clock. those songs just sound fucking crisply tight and perfect. there was a couple "break back-in" moments in DC where I thought my soul was going to be cut in two. they really dropped the hammer on those moments when the song comes back in after the "not brokennnnn" refrain.

being as close as we were, it was easy to see all the band members' body language and little mannerisms while jamming. like when jimmy would play a badass little fill and then shoot billy a quick look...and then billy would smile, noticing the fill but never looking up to acknowledge, and then he would smirk and play his badass lick as a response to jimmy's "challenge". well, after seeing this happen over and over there were definitely a couple moments were jeff also picked up on the whole vibe, especially during superchrist.

i also think jeff's confidence level is through the roof compared to paris. his contributions on to sheila, shame, starla, etc. are just phenonmenal. i think he was missing out on some justly deserved shout-outs. he's gettign into the music, feeling it, and getting involved more with billy and jimmy on the jam sessions. i really feel like Jeff is a real pumpkin, after seeing the show last night. i mean, the guitar smashing says it all right? billy was really pushing him to do it...almost like an inauguration of some kind.

this has also initiated me to track down all sorts of music from Jeff's past, so stay-tuned for some downloads of that stuff.

there is definitely a contrast compared to his dynamic with ginger. ginger seems to always be looking at billy for approval yet never really getting it. i caught a couple moments on stage where billy was giving ginger a chance to do something more creative (the beginnign of lucky 13, and at the first refrain part of hummer) and she didn't take advantage of it either time. doomsday clock and bleeding the orchid on the other hand, and superchrist, ginger was awesome. same with thats the way.

HMM was fucking amazing live (i'm telling you all, youtube doesn't do it justice) and just the overall show itself had a really great energy. i mean, motherfucking SUPERCHRIST....god damn....

I was at this show - the only one I could make it to sadly... and what an AMAZING show!!! I had the lucky opportunity of having VIP access and was able to watch from the VIP balcony (great view btw!). Just before the show started - Linda (and this long haired dude) came and sat on the balcony. I thought - wow, that's Linda Strawberry - and sure enough she sang (interpret how you wish ;-) ) on a few songs.

HMM definitely kicked major ass as frenchy said above. The jam at the end was unbelievable. And how we got that second encore - still amazes me (in a good way!). I was cheering with the best of them even though the lights were on. Lucky for us - we were treated to Zeitgeist and Muzzle!! What an GREAT show - one I will never forget!!

Oh - and also got to see a couple songs from the video "control room". Full HD baby!!! All I can say is WOW! - the DVD will be absolutely fucking awesome!!!

peace

I see someone already posted a picture of what the picks look like, but here is a shot of mine anyhow. Apologies for the blurry picture, all I've got is a camera phone at the moment.

I drove from San Diego with 3 friends to see the show. Twas my first pumpkins show and it was awesome, I had noticed that Billy threw out a pick or two at one point, but thought it landed way in the crowd in front of me, later my girlfriend pointed out the pick on the ground to me so we snagged it, and now I've got a pretty awesome souvenir.

so anything other than a seat in the balcony come with that VIP access?

so anything other than a seat in the balcony come with that VIP access?

that (which alone was worth the view) and the access to the video control room (of course watching live was much better - but cool to see the "DVD in the making" so to speak...)

not sure if it really allowed access anywhere else - such as backstage... i don't think so... didn't allow access to the rear balcony areas.... so it wasn't "full access" but still nice nonetheless...

but it was a great night!

I was on Live 105 radio just before noon talking about Jeff's guitar smashing.. he said he thought it was the prissiest guitar smash ever.. and I told the DJ how they did the joke sale for $10,000 the next night.. (that's all they aired)

not aired: I told him they played F You last night and 1/2 acoustic 1/2 electric.. he asked me if they played Mayonaise, I said no probably because it was co-written by James.. he said that's what I thought

my bad davin. thank you.

jeff's guitar smash was pretty lame. while they were having problems billy kept telling jeff to just smash the guitar and jeff just kind of smiled and shook his head. he was probably contemplating whether to do it or not during the whole show, lol.

btw, i'm sure you've all discussed the new members and whatnot, but i really can't stand ginger nor jeff. they looked absolutely bored at the two shows i went to, and they don't have any stage presence at all. seeing the way ginger plays bass was also very depressing.

eff you, rainbow zen. you suck if you think jeff can't play that guitar. And seeing Ginger play bass WHAT way?? Like D'arcy was a really high standard to live up to in the talent department...

I've grown really attached to these new members already, so I can't help but defend them like I would Billy or Jimmy. I love D'arcy and James, and if they ever came back I'd be the happiest girl in the world. But saying that Jeff and Ginger aren't good is really stupid.

You anger me. rawwwwwwwwwwwwr

alright, fair enough.

But I disagree. hahahaha, seriously, maybe Ginger I can understand. She seems shy and I admit she doesn't seem to be fitting in well.

But JEFF? C'mon, man!! I think he's having a great time. And I'll be sure to ask him when we get married...

Ginger doesn't look extremely excited up there, but Jeff on the other hand, I don't know when you were watching him, but I was in front of him for 5 of the 6 Fillmore shows, and he was rocking out and totally into it most of the time. His playing was superb

like the review i posted a little ways back in this thread, i think Jeff is doing outstanding. his work on starla, shame, to sheila, etc. is fucking top notch.

and i still stand by my comments about ginger from my review of the first show in Paris. she is more confident and articulate than darcy, but less "harsh" or "twangy" as melissa becuase she doesn't slap or pluck the strings as much as she used to. so overall i think she is doing a kickass job. all the old material, zero, today, glass&the ghost children, chreub rock, etc. all has a nice full meaty sound to it, thanks to her bass playing.

and she rocks the fucking house on doomsday clock lately.
