View Full Version : Billy Corgan's British Equivalent...
...is Damon Albarn. Seriously, Billy has at least ten things in common with Blur's lead singer.
1. Basic reputations - Insanely hardworking, control freaky and arrogant.
2. Lead singers and sole songwriters of their respective bands.
3. Employed wayward bassists who like the charlie (i.e. Alex James & D'arcy)
4. Employed sensitive talented guitar players (Graham and James)
5. Widely disliked by people who don't LOVE their bands.
6. Never the most famous exponent of their scenes (i.e. Damon wasn't Liam and Billy wasn't Kurt) but easily as influnetial.
7. Both men turned to soundtracks after their fifth studio albums.
8. Both suffered severed hair loss in late 20s.
9. Both relish and embrace diversity - witness the extremes of punk and orchestrated pop on Parklife, the playful ballards and Sabbathesque riffing on MCIS.
10. Both men say Oasis are a joke but are secretly admirers - Damon always wanted to write a song like Wonderwall which the whole world can hum whereas Billy was seen standing open mouthed with awe sidestage at Oasis' 1999 comeback show in Chicago.
11. Like Gorrillaz, Billy's second incarnation Zwan will dwarf his original success...whoah, maybe I'm getting carried away now.
Can anyone tell me if Billy and Damon have ever met of publicly spoke of each other.
hereisnowhy 06-17-2002, 03:06 PM I'm sure every person on earth has 10 things in common with Bolly.
What's this "standing open-mouthed with awe" thing? What's your source? Sounds like lame second-hand info to me. Maybe he was yawning.
DeviousJ 06-17-2002, 05:45 PM Are you smoking ground plastic or something?
Graveflower 06-17-2002, 06:05 PM wow.
That's all I have to say.
This post is just so retarded i'm not even going to bother picking out faults with it or asking if he is a retard

billy's rapt attendence at the oasis show made a few reviews - certainly NME. It was late 1999 and Oasis' first show anywhere in the world for 2 years..
people are taking this post WAY too seriously - doesn't the hair loss comparison say something?
DoctaSoma 06-17-2002, 08:53 PM Both artists are depicted as cartoons.
Dumb topic tho.

mytransgressions 06-17-2002, 10:05 PM I think this topic is pretty interesting...
Its a light, fun little post and i think he had some well thought out comments.
anyway, like the doctor said- you forgot about the cartoon thing..
Also, i could see Billy liking Oasis.. The first two albums were really good.. James had Morning Glory ranked as one of his favorites the year it came out.

Blur were much bigger than the Pumpkins in Europe - they had loads of number one albums and singles from 1994 onward and played their own shows (i.e. not festivals) to 30,000 people. I'd wager that if you ******* Gorrillaz sales Damon has sold more albums than Billy.

i don't know about that. blur can't even go gold in the US while the pumpkins went multi-platinum in the U.S. and in Europe. and i'm not even going to get into mellon collie. that thing sold a shit load world wide. and Gorillaz did descent but nothing huge. i mean take radiohead for example. OK computer was a big hit, but it only sold like 4m world wide or something like that i think.

what 'woohoo' song was designed to break them into the US.
they had a whole bunch of pretty famous lame songs before that though, country house, and boys who like girls, n shit. bleh.
bulletproof 06-18-2002, 10:19 AM And ughhh, Oasis' first show back or whatever in 1999 wasn't in Chicago. It was in Philadelphia, on December 3rd for the Y100 Feastival. I was there....that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Green Plastic 06-18-2002, 11:24 AM Both artists are in rock bands.
peabody 06-18-2002, 11:35 AM the lack of blur knowledge scares me!
Example 06-18-2002, 11:53 AM This post is awesome what the Hell is everyone's problem.
Woody 06-18-2002, 12:58 PM I kindof agree.
Although a lot less melancholy, I have always felt there were similarities between blur songs and sp songs. Oh, and Blur are great (though their early stuff is rather shakey... but then so is The Marked).

Either way, all of Blur's songs are written by the band.

not true - the exact credits are songs by albarn music by blur, similar i think to the cure's credits - i.e. songs by robert smith, music by the band
