Hahahaha

Billy was all happy till he saw me. He said "that's the guy" to the driver. And look forward.

That was pretty funny. Also the band runner asked me if I had a job. I told her I work for myself. And I am on vacation

I believe even spfc (currently down) lists it as leaving lane/leaving lament.. Billy has used varying new song titles.. The monitor is NOT easy to read, and it only shows the first 10-12 characters for each song.. So you can imagine it would be hard to distinguish between lame or lane.. Sp.com will post the setlist sometime in december so you can verify it then :)

Billy nicked his finger during superchrist which I think turned it into a better performance than last night (more anger)... Seemed longer too

I think this is the longest billy has avoided talking to the crowd.. He has not said a word..

btw, when the lights came up after Muzzle a decent sized group remained and were cheering and clapping, etc.. but then they put the big black cover over Jimmy's drums.. and finally started clearing everyone out a few minutes later.. so at least we tried.. but yeah it was a smaller contingent than the crowd on 7/18 who made the lights turn off again. :)

InfinityNow
07-26-2007, 04:22 AM
I think it sounds more like Billy was mad more at the venue or something, not the fans. Bands usually take it as a compliment when people follow them around a tour... And IF MonteDS is a stalker, at least he's not a voyeur. I mean the guy shows up, watches the show, and afterwards asks some questions - that's not only to be expected but isn't that all a band can ask for? It's only a little extraordinary enthusiasm if you ask me. What might be abnormal here, is the band having to go out and bring their own PA 'cause the one at the venue sucks... or maybe they're under a strict time-limit every night, hence the black cover over the drums?

MonteLDS

Thanks for the info Mark

Billy should "Bring the Light" to cheer himself and the city of SF up. I just watched the "Peace and Love" from 7/24. I can't believe how down on the city he is. Yes, there are a lot of bums, but is that really killing your whole inspiration to play music?

JRiordan

There may be a time limit but it's not exactly "strict". Most shows they play 10PM-1AM (or 1:05-1:10).

Can Mark tell more about the PA? The sound the first show 7/15 was kinda bad, but 2nd and 3rd shows I thought it was much better. Louder bass now Mark said...

yeah they stopped playing maybe 12:20am tonight.. way early

yeah all I know is the speakers on the right side were totally different as of last night.. and the sound was much louder... the sound was actually louder last night than tonight, causing the fillmore staff to actually walk around handing out earplugs last night.. but my friend commented that Billy sounded pretty bad on That's the Way

I'm no sound expert, so maybe someone who is can comment further

Billy barely said a word to the audience, and just seemed to be going through the motions.. we had the impression that he was in a bad mood tonight.. but there was no specific incident.. unless Billy was upset that the opening band lead singer fell off the stage.. haha

Lol, this is great, just two months into a comeback tour and we've already got Billy giving impressions that he's pissed, "burnt out," and doesn't "feel the magic" anymore! All I know is he seemed to be in a good mood and enjoying the shows I saw in person (Asheville Shows 3 & 4), and I'm glad I decided to go to Asheville rather than San Fran. Damn, I should check into Ticketmaster to make sure that if the tour's cancelled I can atleast get my money back on the tickets...I'm sure they have a "service fee" for refunds. Haha :hanging:

some pretty interesting info here. Thanks for all the info Monte. It has been a pleasure reading your updates. I saw three shows at the Orange Peel. night 5,8,9. I think part of it honestly is his own fault. The fans have been ready buying all the tickets showing up early digging the three hour shows. Even despite the fact he didnt really give us what we thought when the press release was announced. I could feel the energy start to change around night 8 when i went. We were all in the line laughing about how there was noway in hell we would get any new oldies not played. All we could hope for was some of the new acoustic songs etc....Kind of like the air had been let out. I honestly dont understand what the point of booking all of these shows was. I mean Billy just seems to really miss oppurtnuitys sometimes. I honestly think its a shame he worried about sales so much also. Its becoming annoying now. I mean what the hell is the point of playing 12 shows somewhere when your going to play the same 28 songs. It just makes no sense. I wanted to catch as many shows this fall but if this doesnt change i may just hit one. Maybee if he had delivered on his message about the runs he would have people beating down the doors to get in each night if there about 100 or so songs being played. Which in turn might inspire him more. Of course i dont know. I think he just needs to focus on his music and quit worrying about all the bullshit he worries about.

I agree that it seemed like it was that last week of shows in Asheville that the excitement of the whole residency thing started to fizzle, both down there in Asheville and on the board here. I thought the first 4 shows of the residency tour lived up to the billing, Billy had come out with, I think, four new songs in those first four shows; not to mention it was during these first couple shows that they started playing "Starla" "Rotten Apples" "TAFH" and "Ode To No One". It probably would've been wise to spread out the premiering of these songs, because the entire sets were starting to seem old to everyone in the last couple AVL shows, and that was carried over to San Fran. I think that anyone who thought that these residencies were goin' to total like 100 different songs played was overly optimistic and very naive.

Oh yeah, like you mentioned, it's also been annoying to keep hearing the lecture from Billy to "buy the album and don't illegally download it!" I can understand him throwin' it out there during the Live Earth gig, but don't go bitchin' to the fans who have actually paid the money and done the travelling to see you play during the residency. I've got tickets to all three Philly shows in October, but I have to admit, with the way things are lookin', I might not bother goin' to all three.

The residencies have been twice as long as they should of been. 5 dates in each venue would of been far more achievable, in terms of surprises and keeping it fresh. 11 dates in one venue is madness at this point - a year or two down the line, when the band are more comfortable with a bigger selection of songs to choose from would of been a more suitable time.

Still excited about the new songs - No Surrender and Peace and Love are both really nice. But Billy's stage banter is getting increasingly sour which is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Don't know about you guys.

I guess i am naive. I expected after 7 years off it wasnt to much to expect. As it has been mentioned before many other bands pull it off even with new members. Examples being The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam etc...... The Crowes played 90 songs on a 7-8 night run at the Hammerstein with a new drummer. And they pulled it off. I think people on this board are kind of sticking their head in the sand if they think it comes down to not being able to learn the stuff etc...Look at that new reworked Heavy Metal Machine. Its Billy being Billy bottom line. I think he truly enjoys being very difficult with things like this. Almost like he knows that what we want and he refuses to give us the pleasure of giving it to us. Which is his right as an artist. As a fan i want him to do what feels right and what gets him off each night. Thats what makes him unique is how difficult and hard to read he is. And i totally respect that. If this is how he wants the runs remembered so be it. But again he seems to focus on revolution, great shows, sales, excitement but he doesnt help his cause by pulling what he pulled with these residencys. Hes an interesting character and i keep coming back to see whats next although im begining to lose interest in following these shows.

At the risk of sounding fangrrl, how could we who are enthused about SP2, with the release of QAOS & AD2 and with the new songs/developments to older songs, pass this enthusiasm/support onto the band ... without coming off crazy stalker-like? *don't read into that Monte, I'm sure you're fine. To me Billys most confusing attribute is how much weight he places on the "industry" and "sales" WHO GIVES A FUCK! He of all people should "get" that and i have a hard time undestanding why he obsesses over it. Even on Machina he ranted about Britney Spears selling more albums than him etc...Billy shouldnt need those thing to validate his music. This really makes me wonder how big and intense his ego truly might be. Yeah maybee now that he is a few months into this hes just bored getting on stage and running through Hummer night after night. The magic just isnt there for him doing it. I cant imagine what it must be like to have played all the shows he has played esp on MCIS and then try and recapture that crack hit he got back then. I just think hes searching for that feeling and cant quite get there anymore i dont know.

aww Monte don't take this to heart, I'm sure Billy has no problem with you being at

the shows and probably really appreciates it, after all he's always saying that he wants

the hardcore fans to go to his shows, you know, not the ones who are going to be at

the bar all night, talking during the set, yelling their requests, booing, throwing shit, etc.

I think Billy just lets the critics, album sales, reviews, and all that other negative bullshit

affect him too much, and no matter how much he says he doesn't care about all that,

it clearly does have an impact on him, which is unfortunate.

p.s. thanks for the updates and videos :) and I hope you don't decide to give up your tix.

I went to shows 3 and 4 at Asheville. Seems like he had fun with it for 5-6 nights and then got tired of it.

SP has never been good at varying setlists. He gets stuck on songs and doesn't seem interested in playing anything else. Hummer is a good example. I like Hummer, but why all of a sudden are they playing it? It wasn't a live show staple before now.

I just can't wrap my head around the fact that they have SO MANY good songs that people would love to hear and they don't play them. Hell, you could make a whole setlist of fan favorites that haven't been played yet.

At this point it's pretty obvious that Billy likes being a super star. He wants to sell albums. He wants to be #1. He may never be happy again at this rate, because he seems pretty deflated about Zeitgeist's sales, which were about as good as any outside observer could have expected.

BTW, Monte. Just because BC had a bad day shouldn't reflect anything on you. You're doing an unbelievable service to the fan community. He should be buying your meals and paying you to upgrade your equipment.

Given that there's really no other hard rock band charting well these days, don't know why Corgan would be too surprised. No one is doing extremely well at the moment. Don't see how that would cause a meltdown. It's clear that he hasn't liked the vibe in San Fran since getting there.....it's probably like Asheville and just really weighing on him. But that's just an assumption.

I think they could try playing without stage lights, just leave the house lights on,

Ah, well I was right at the other balcony. It's all recorded in 16x9 in 1280x720 on a sd card, I tried to zoom a bit on some songs but since I wasn't seated it was real hard to keep a steady picture, even with the cam stabilizer. Also that camera isn't that great in low lights, so there's all those washed out colors especially during movements...

why did u record to an SD card if it is HD 720p camera?

w/ HD video the low light issue isn't that bad.

sorry maybe i am too picky... :(

To Sheila full band electric was the only thing worth seeing

Did Corgan's mood get you down that much Monte? Or have you just seen them too many times this week?

To Sheila full band electric was the only thing worth seeing

well, lets make sure we're clear here...

typically, billy has been ending the acoustic sets by keeping his acoustic guitar while the rest of the band joins him for To sheila.

so when you say full band electric, are you saying billy ditched his acoustic guitar and picked up an electric guitar? or do you just mean the rest of the band joined him like usual?

i just want to make extra special sure....

he's been to too many shows in a single weak. adequate spread is an important thing.

yikes, i can't wait till billy writes an acoustic jam that's gossamer length complete with the alien space cows calling through time and space to each other for 15 minutes.

i'd still probably listen to it 30 times despite that though

Yeah he did in 2001... it's called Girl With the Cruel Face.

Billy was indeed playing an electric guitar on To Sheila last night.

Maybe I'm burned out too, but I agree with Monte. It was the weakest show of the ones I've seen (I've only missed 7/16 so far). Something was clearly bothering Billy (more than the "I'm not feelin' SF" thing he's going through) and it had an impact on the performance.

7/16 was the best show for sure other than santa cruz where the setlist made the crowd happy and crazy.
Last nights crowd was one of the better crowds. Less people yelling for songs then normal.
I am sure people were yelling for songs. But I am in the balcony. So if I can hear it, then it is real bad.
Come on Aug 2nd!!! Too much billy + too much waiting in line equals sucide
Not really, but I want to rest in peace.

I'm trying to imagine what he was doing. The versions with him on acoustic and Jeff on electric are just fantastic. Same for "With Every Light". Go Jeff!!

monte doesn't buy food there.. I usualy try to get food sometime before 9pm, so I can check out the opening act and also be free to get the setlist 930-10pm.. but if the menu doesn't have anything interesting I may not get food (only happened 1-2 nights). in any case, look for us in the balcony (I'm sure you can find Monte).. I'll get there sometime after 8p

I'm interested...why do you wear a shirt and tie to a rock concert, Monte? I understand how LDSers like to maintain a distinct and professional appearance for their everyday public relations, etc....but do you just genuinely enjoy this standard of dress? Mind, it would make you insanely easy to spot! ;)

Billy can be so unsettled and moody. It really is trying being an SP fan sometimes...

I roam around.. sometimes in the balcony, sometimes sitting in the restaurant area, sometimes on the front of the floor in the right corner.. once you find Monte tell him to call me.. sometimes I eat before the show too so I'm not hungry either.. but if the menu looks good enough i'll just eat a second dinner

Just got back from the 7.25 show after an 18 hour drive yesterday and a 10 hour drive today.

A few notes about the show.
1. First, Billy didnt say a word except between 2 songs near the end. He just said something about them being The Smashing Pumpkins.
2. During Shame, Billy added in the middle "its a motherfucking shame" like he really meant it, like he's just ... sad. Ya, he looked really sad for most of the show, though cracked a few smiles here and there. But ya, he mostly looked sad.
3. Peace and Love was absolutely beautiful. I went with 4 friends all of whom mentioned how emotional it is.
4. Right after Peace and Love, some asshole yelled "YOU'RE A FREAK!".......kinda got the feeling that sealed the deal re: not wanting to be here.
5. The crowd stayed for a LONG time after the lights went out, to the point where security got angry. We just kept cheering, and Gio, the head security guy, looked like he was gonna punch someone. He kept saying "the band is already changing, go home" and "go get your posters, go home." Eventually he just started yelling "GO HOME WE HAVE TO BRING THE GUITAR CASES IN. OK. BRING THE CASES IN."
6. Superchrist was a definite highlight, as was Heavy Metal Machine - a nice surprise I was not expecting (the enjoyment of it being surprising).
7. I stood in line for 11 hours with 4 friends who basically knew the singles and the new album, and they absolutely LOVED the show. My brother still cant get over how amazing the show was. They've been raving about it for 2 days.
8. I dont know why people keep saying Thats the Way isnt good live. I love it. It felt so much more grand.

Oh! ALso...
I cant believe no one mentioned the fact that the singer from Moving Units fell off the stage. He looked absolutely strung out, tripped on a drum mic, ended up sitting on Billy's amp to catch his balance. But then the amp toppled over, and the singer just came tumbling right in front of me, back first, between the stage and the barricade. He stayed on the ground for about...15 seconds and wobbled back up. :erm:

Also...I think 7.25 was the shortest show yet. Billy came on at around 10:10 and they were doen by 12:30.

Seriously, the guy in the green shirt (techie I presume) pretty much holds the band together.
