Oh man! Billy sounds kinda irked... and he again mentioned in a contentious way the claim that "it's all about the music" (from the 7/16 "Reflections"), but countering it with the "realities" that they have to pay for the lights, hotels, travel, etc.

What is up with his pronounciation of the word "angst". Haha.

And he totally shot down the question at the end...

When I heard Billy makes those comments which specifically pointed out "blacks" and "Asians," I just knew that someone of "heightened social awareness" would call him out on that. Specifically, as an"embarrassingly out of of touch white guy doing his sincere abeit ignorant best to appear nonracist and openminded." If this were some matter of sociological study, such discourse dismantling the subconcious motives and implicit assertions of this specific terminology to absurd levels of speculative insight might be appropriate. But this is hardly an academic matter. (And--especially knowing Billy's background as a suburban working-class type Chicago kid--"black" and "Asain" is typical of the kind of vernacular shorthand used to simply make a statement meaning "those kids that stood out because they didn't quite fit the typical racial/ethnic/etc. mold of our area and were just assumed to be different/outsiders/have different tastes than the rest of us because of that." It's not meant to be offensive.)

It's really just as much of a stereotype to assume that only a "certain kind" of white suburban kid (goth, EMOkid, whatever) listens to, or could appreciate the Pumpkins. While I honestly don't know a whole ton of black kids that listen to rock over something like hip hop or R&B, I've known (sometimes in person) Pumpkins fans from literally every heritage and corner of the globe.

Yet I've also encountered (and you wouldn't believe how much this actually happens) people who are convinced Billy is a fucking "skinhead" (the racist variety, of course) or something because of his appearance, his "background," or both. And I think Billy himself knows it. It probably frustrates him to a certain extent.

I was at the show last night and just made it home to LA a couple of hours ago. I'm having serious PC issues so this will be brief. Superchrist was fucking amazing. All I knew was that the band came out and knocked us on our asses with something I'd never heard before. One of my first thoughts was that this is why the Smashing Pumpkins are the best band out there these days. No one else can rock like that.

When shuffling downstairs to the exit I spoke to a guy (late 20s, maybe) who had received a physical paper copy (2 pages) of the intended setlist. Death From Above and Muzzle were supposed to come after Cherub Rock.

The sound was amazing. One of the clearest (and heaviest) live shows I've ever seen. Incredibly loud. The band was super tight and Jimmy is unstoppable.

Gossamer was very cool and much better live than on the boots (although I love the boots). Billy reintroduced the main riff (the ascending line) at the very end. I don't know if they'd been doing this recently but it was very good. Also, during United States Jimmy stopped completely while Billy played the national anthem.
