I am bored- what elsee can I say. But the line here is better than normal. New people here in line. I am here w/ smashing0

Is line longer today? Of the first 3 shows I believe the first (Sunday 7/15) had the longest -- most likely due to it being Sunday. But it still wasn't TOO long

And hey you guys got 6 new songs at the "radio only" Fillmore show 7/19... so yeah I think it has to count in your numbering!!! Tonight is show #6

MonteLDS
07-22-2007, 04:00 PM
Well santa cruz I wasn't sure what to do w/ that. But ya show #6. Todays lkine is short short! It was 1pm and not more than half the post office wall full. I went for a walk and I am now on my way back. Its almost 2 and we will see what we have. I don't expect too many people, which is surprising since it is a sunday. Their was no show yesterday even. Anyways peace out

so they'll allow hi def video cameras, but not film SLRs? i have a digital SLR, i just prefer film. plus my digital REALLY looks professional. my film one is a 10 year old prosumer model.

that sucks. i wanted to get some grainy pushed up black and white of billy's shiny head lol... oh well. i'm sure my wife won't mind me not taking it, it's her first pumpkins show and she just wants to rock.
i can't hide it because i didn't bring the back lens caps for the camera or the lens cause i was trying to travel light. trust me, i had a bitch of a time deciding what 1 lens to bring. it was a hard choice haha. i'm a dork.

By the way, my wife and I arrived yesterday and have been trying to fit as much San Francisco in as possible before we leave tomorrow, and I have to say you guys have a wonderful city here. and I hate the city of San Francisco. I don't know who vacations here, but every single hotel is booked, every rental car is gone, and I've never seen so many bums in my life.

At least in Philly the bums had boundaries, in San Fran, they're everywhere.

If I told you I'd have to kill you... ;)

There is a screen by the soundboard that always has it. I think they had it in Asheville too. Since the setlists are like ~25 songs long, not all fit on screen at once, thus before the show you can only see about the first half, then later they scroll it down (thus the "sneak peek part 2" that Monte just posted).

I would not dare peek at this before the show... but man, tonight... again?!?! Throw us a bone Billy!

MonteLDS
07-23-2007, 01:46 AM
Yes the sound is loud :erm:

I (markpregen) get the setlist from the soundboard monitor.. There's a big screen that shows about 15 songs at a time.. Hence leak part 1 and 2.. At least I don't lose all hope until around 1130... But anyway,I also spoil movies and cheat at video games.. Its in my genes

Hope you're enjoying yourself there Monte. I can relate to how people are feeling about the lack of change in the lists; if I had known they were going to be having this little variation I likely would've settled at around 2 nights to this...not that I don't enjoy it but 2 is probably enough to hear most of the songs they've been playing...but frankly so far SF Residency hasn't lived up to Asheville in terms of adventure.

well, i really enjoyed the show tonight... but i will say that not giving us either silverfuck OR gossamer was pretty fucked up. one of the big jam songs would have been nice. oh, and where was doomsday clock? it's my favorite song on the album! HMM was insanely bad ass, waaaaay better than on the machina tour. drown was amazing and starla was a long time coming for me... too long...
but you guys are absolutely right, while these sets are extremely enjoyable, and the zeitgeist songs are freaking SICK live, there's nothing really adventurous about the residency dates. i guess i don't understand what he's trying to do... oh well, maybe st. paul and normal will fill in the gaps for me. later on guys!

Ok I got a lot of good info for you guys from the mouth of billy. Once again billy & I spoke to each other after the show.I asked if had any plans to surprise us w/ new songs from the setlist. Someone asked if he'd play porcelina and I can't recall if he really answered. But I think he said no. Then I was just asking him in true netphoria style "do you even rember how to play porcelina?" And he looked at me and said "ya"
I asked him if he was going play anything new for us. And he told me he hadn't felt inspired here like he did in ashville.

But here is the question we all want to hear. I asked him "hey billy in asheville you played mayo during sound check and got half way threw it. Getting a lot of people in ashville excited. Then you didn't play it." He then kind of cut me off pointed at me and said w/ his non offensive charm yet no smile and said "you scare me!"
He then said goodbye.

I got a lot of amazing video tonite. I have gotten a lot better recently. I got some amazing stuff to show you.

For example. Jimmy and Billy doing a newer song together acoustic guitar.

The Jerry story (greatful dead)

The banter before some songs where he explains he is kidding a lot.

A great accoustic version of crying tree

Plus much much more!

As for fixing the setlist. I think markpregen will do that othherwise I am going to do it tomorrow. Goodnight folks-

Hey monte, it was nice meeting you unofficially (we were standing side by side when billy talked to us, and spoke afterwords)

I want to send a big shoutout for those kind souls who are sacrificing their concert experience to hold still with their equipment for the benefit of everyone! I danced with Jack for most of the show as he was running video also. This project is just amazing. What an beautiful community we have here for so many to shoot, tape and share. I have easy access to a DAT if anyone has mics we can run. Send me a PM if you can help.

As far as peeps feeling let down by the fillmore shows, i just don't know what to say. I was lucky enough to get 9 tickets the morning they went on sale (over a two and half hour bout with TM, and feel so blessed. I realize that they might not be playing new material every night, and that they are playing a lot of the same songs, but its the freakin fillmore folks!!! I am still looking for tickets to the 27, 28, 31st and the 1st. Not worried in the least, but if anyone has an extra that they are not looking to profit from, I'd love to to get involved.

Even if billy doesn't feel as inspired here in sf, seeing the pumpkins in such an intimate and amazing venue is still such a treat. When I saw them back in 1992 and 1993 they were playing much larger venues (at least the shows that I saw).

From talking to people that have been to both residencies and like Jeff said in his latest post....there is a different vibe in SF. It just isnt inspirational to Billy, apparently.

IMHO, Maybe its the fact that that Residency was one of the biggest things to happen in Asheville in a long time. It was like the Pumpkins community dominated life there for two plus weeks. In a major metropolitan, its like second page Entertainment section news. Even in a place like Tampa it wouldnt have dominated the city like it did Asheville.

So it WAS "Zeitgeist" (SONG)! Woo hoo!!!

But "not inspired"? Ouch

And it sounds bad about the ending of the interview... though the 3 nights I was there, Billy also left rather abruptly too. Did he seem irritated by the Mayo & setlist inquiries?

We are grasping for anything at this point.. but yeah Zeitgeist is such a nice track.

Listening to the album right now, enjoying it WAY better than when I listened a few days ago (when I was suddenly down on it). Man, if some of the mixing on this album was fixed up a tad, it would just be that much more awesome. Take DC for example... just quiet down the vocals a bit and it stands up to some of their greats. OK... off topic...

alright, so it was the first time seeing them since 2000 (berkeley & leno). i had a great time.....good to finally attend a proper rock and roll concert.

i got there at about 9:45 and the band came out at around 10:10.

bc came out in the dress/kimono and started off with united states. he look reeeaally tired during the first couple minutes.....not moving around much and just staring angrily at us. thankfully for us, his mood and energy went up and up as the show progressed.

highlights of the first electric set for me were: Lucky 13, GATC!, Hummer, Drown and In My Body. i really liked the way he reworked GATC.....it flows muuuuch better than the version they were playing in 2000. the middle section is awesome in how he builds the song up to the "she counted the spiders....as they crawled up inside her" part. In My Body was unrecognizable at first. again, i liked how he reworked this song. i never really liked it until last night. good stuff.

what killed it for me though, were these 3 drunks that were about 15 rows back....in front of Jeff. these guys were their late 40s and were super obnoxious, talking throughout most of the set. once the alcohol kicked in, they decided it would be cool to mosh between the 3 of them. luckily they ran out of beer and had to refill. how the hell did these guys get tickets?

Death from Above was awesome.....moment i'll never forget. bc's voice was spot on. very impressed. singing it with just a piano really brings out the vocal melody of the song much better than the album version. rotten apples and crying tree were well played too. again, i wasn't that big a fan of those songs, but bc converted me last night. With Every Light was one of the best songs of the night. again, a reworked machina song and sounded totally fresh and exciting.

then the band went back to electric and did a killer run of songs: Tonight, Tonight, Tarantula, Starz, Zero, Today. this obviously got the crowd going. the mood and atmosphere were peaking during this run. i was surprised by Tarantula last night. the live version is intense and the crowd really got into it.HMM....it just kept hitting harder and harder. bc reworked this song to the point where most of the vocal melody was changed and the only thing recognizable was the main riff.

zeitgeist with bc and jimmy. what a surprise! i don't remember much about No Surrender. it was with the full band. it was mellow.....along the same lines as Stellar .... no big soaring chorus.....no big electric guitars. the song was OK.the crowd was really loud during the encore breaks. clapping.....stomping their feet. bc seemed to appreciate it.

ended the show with muzzle. everyone sang along and the night was over. good way to end.

banter was good tonight. bc talked about how people can't recognize when he's joking.....so he now has to say "i was joking" after everything he says. his mood was good. he was smiling and laughing throughout most of that rant. he also made a reference to Bob....his stinky hippie roomate from way back when. there was also one part where he sings "the love that we create" and pointed right at Ginger. the look on her face was priceless.... it was 50% disgust and 25% uncomfortability and 25% blushing. there was also some joking about how he saw the ghost of jerry garcia. how he saw them when he was 14 . he joked about how he made eye contact with jerry garcia and how that was like the passing of the torch. jeff said he wasn't a big grateful dead fan....and bc said that a group of hippies were gonna kick his ass after the show.

ok. that's it for me. i'll be back for the last show 8/1. most notable for me were the 2007 versions of the machina songs, death from above, with every light, tarantula, zeitgeist and muzzle.

No Surrender seems like a good song for being written recently. Of course it needs work but I like it so far. Not as good as some of the others though.

tour shirts are $50.
unless you're fat, in which case they charge you $55.
there's also a flag for $30.
a cd for $15.
a hoodie for $90.
i think that's it.

Actually the regular shirts are $35 or $40 for XXL. Only the "Drifter" T is $50.
3 designs: New Style Zero (Black), Zeitgeist Coin (2 colors?), Zeitgeist cover shirt with tour cities on back (4 colors, green, red, white, yellow)
Also there is Zeitgeist Belt Buckle for $20. And Pins... I think $10 or 15 for a couple in a bag.

Again, I'd like to point out that the Drifter shirts are really small. I fit a XL shirt just fine, but a XXL drifter shirt is spandex belly city. At $55 you'd think they could use real sizes.

The guitar on Surrender is really pretty. This song has a lot of potential.

I never knew it was possible to enjoy such kickass food at a rock concert. I mean, it's real food...like indian food, grilled fish and shit. Mmmmm.
