Corgan came by himself...
they have now played Gossmar twice now during sound check, we can't get too close to the door because of fillmore people don't want us too close...

if there's no new songs played tonight im sure a few people in the crowd will feel a bit let down considering he promised that they would "retool songs that didn't make it onto zeitgeist" (which so far he has not done, unless you count playing gossamer for longer and longer every night) and he also promised to offer "new songs written the day of the show". so if they don't pull something new out of their ass tonight i don't think i'll be the only "douchebag" who feels a bit let down

they started adding cooler songs and more songs nightly for a long time but then they kind of started to lose momentum in the set list variation from night to night and at the last show they didn't even play the 2 new songs they had on the set list that was publicly released which, if you ask me, it was a HUGE mistake to let that get out.

I stopped by the fillmore myself.. the doors open at 8pm.. show starts at 9pm with Fair to Midland.. Pumpkins start at 10pm.. same deal as Asheville
of course as soon as I showed up they stopped the soundcheck.. anyway, I'll go back around 8pm to get in the back of the line

07-15-2007, 05:53 PM
Hmm if doors open at 8pm, are they going to have enough time to verify IDs/distribute the 1000+ tickets for the 9pm show?
Anyone know how efficient Orange Peel distro/entry was?

yeah I have no idea.. when I called on the phone they said doors would open at 7:30pm.. but the sign on the box office window says 8pm, so who knows.. i'm sure they'll see how f'd up things go tonight and adjust accordingly for tomorrow

Hmm, according to this post by Angie in an Asheville thread (http://forums.netphoria.org/showthread.php?t=143520&highlight=orange+tickets+check), staff begin verifying stuff while people are still in line. So, bringing photo ID, the ordering CC and the TM confirmation might be helpful...

well the impression I have is that Asheville was a very "down home" kind of place... the owners were walking the line just giving out tickets to people who needed them, etc.. I don't think you'll have that experience at the Fillmore.. I suppose they might walk the line and check ID's but I highly doubt it.. we'll soon find out

Based on the setlist i'm glad I decided to stay home tonight. Would have loved to hear Drown. Not a big fan of Gossamer would rather they did not play it the days i'm there.
its kinda of masturbatory, for everyone... except Ginger, she's left out of the musical circle jerk.

they started at 10:02pm
Jeff was wearing his street clothes outfit (black and white checkered shirt) and ginger was hot
they opened with the creepy lullaby music.. i dont know if it was "suspiria" because i didnt listen to the asheville intro
on doomsday clock.. billy f'd up the part where he was supposed to say "ticking in my heart not broken" on the first chorus.. he said "ticking in my heart these lonely days" (as if he was already on the 2nd chorus) and then caught himself and laughed or something
after starla billy said "welcome to our band practice"
after lucky 13 billy said "time for a rock and roll party"
there was moshing during heavy metal machine
glass=glass and ghost children
the main set went from 10pm-12:30am (2.5 hours without any set break, unlike the set 1/set 2 style in Asheville)
encore 1 = 30 minute gossamer
after gossamer before the lights came on people were leaving like crazy.. as we know, billy doesn't like when that happens.. the lights came on and the show was over.. of course, the show was already 3 hours at this point, so it might have been an issue with the fillmore wanting to close..
encore 2 was supposed to be cherub rock, muzzle
encore 3 was supposed to be with every light
they should have done the 20 minute gossamer and they would have had time to squeeze in at least encore 2...
all in all, awesome show of course
the opening band Fair to Midland closed their set with the lead singer climbing and hanging from the pumpkins light scaffolding (doing an Eddie Vedder imitation) and then dropping to the ground
one guy was wearing an AD / HD shirt in the style of the BC / JC logo (and AC / DC of course)
i'm sure monte will post more about the merch.. they had a $20 belt buckle.. $25 limited edition of 1000 zeitgeist poster (the cover of the album)... $95 hoodie with the Drifter front on the back of it, and on the front the SP heart.. (no tour dates on it)
The fillmore poster (which will be given out every night of the fillmore shows) featured the lincoln memorial underwater wearing one of those old-timey scuba helmet.. at first I was like WTF but with the cover of zeitgeist featuring the statue of liberty underwater, it made sense.. pretty cool i think
youtube was there heavily promoting the Ask a Pumpkin deal.. i guess they only have 68 questions and would like to have at least 100.. they were giving out cool postcards promoting it, i'll scan one later
they said the pumpkins will be reviewing the questions next week and the answers will start getting posted the week after next (while they're in SF)

Fillmore had a tapers section next to the soundboard and the guys said stands would be fine, but I didn't see anyone set up :(. Monte video taped upstairs, I saw at least 3 other video tapers on the floor, one on the left, two on the right.
Security was pretty lax, only long lens cameras/"professional" were not allowed.
Drown->Silverfuck was amazing. Lotsa solid fans in the house, cheering when Hummer started. Many talking drunks too

haha, security asked one of the loud drunks to be quiet.. and the guy went home.. that was great
crappy scan of the poster.. i'm sure someone will post a better one.. but at least you can see underwater lincoln memorial
monte said his hand was hurting like hell after holding the camera for 2.5 hours straight.. gotta give him props for being a human tripod

people that left early did not get a poster.. but yes they print enough for everyone that buys a ticket to get one poster when they leave.. (the fillmore lincoln memorial poster)
the zeitgeist cover $25.00 poster is limited edition to 1000, apparently, like I said.. but I know you weren't talking about that one

yeah maybe we'll trade off or something... although I would hate to ruin the recording with shaky hands or something, but he said he just needs a few minutes break here and there so we'll see
he's sleeping in a bit tomorrow so hopefully that will help, although I hope he still gets his recording spot

Damn, the show was fucking awesome. My attitude towards Zeitgeist is a billion times higher now that I've seen them play some songs live. It was a blast.
Security there can be a little bitchy. There was some asswipe wearing a hat who was protecting his girlfriend from people who were the ones dancing and tryin to mosh. Security came over and grabbed a few of us away form the asswipe dude with the hat protecting his hot girl, but the dude barely moved his head at all during the night. He looked all pissed.
Just a word to the wise, you can move about but don;t go too crazy or else the big bouncer dudes will come in and stand right in everyone's way. It was some fat fucker who pissed us all off. After he left it picked up again.
Silverfuck was awesome. Gossamer was a good encore and a good ending to the night. Those of us towards the front didn't leave too quickly and it felt like the people around me were ready for a lot more. Everyone around me, me including, went nuts when Hummer was being performed. It was a solid crowd and people knew material that just weren't radio singles. I've got more to say, but after getting on two busses to come home and then walking another half hour because my stupid ass got off at the wrong stop is tired. Gonna go smoke and call it a night.
I'll be there tomorrow, probably early around 2 - 4 so if ya wanna hang or smoke just let me know.

also, at the soundboard they have a big monitor which lists the setlist, although only about 1/2 on the screen at the time.. but I could easily text someone the entire setlist long before the show actually ends, if you guys are interested? I dont know if that would "ruin" things for people.. but it seems like its hard for people to stay awake to hear the whole thing so maybe you wouldn't mind .. and I can update when I get home if they end up axing any encores, like tonight..
well someone PM me your number if you want me to text you.. MisterSquishyHalo perhaps? i'll be at all 13 shows, like Monte
monte could post it but he's too busy trying to record the show, that was the problem tonight too
did anyone hang around after the show and see anyone come out? i went back at 2am and everyone was long gone, so maybe billy left early after the show this time

Billy came out, I thought, around 2am. Jeff and Ginger left like 10 minutes before him, to absolutely no fanfair. Nobody cheered or anything..it was weird. Jimmy left like 40 minutes before everyone.
Billy came out and was really nice and smiling..he mostly talked to some girl in the front, and couldn't really hear what he had to say. He complained about sound issues during the show, but that was about it. He left shortly thereafter.
What encore songs did they axe? Everyone seemed beat by the end of that show...so not surprised they axed it, as half of the house seemed empty.

i think people were not prepared for 30 minute gossamer in san francisco.. except for the fans that have been following the previous setlists.. they wont play gossamer every night so that should help keep the room full and ensure we see the full setlist.. looks like they played it 6 of 9 shows in asheville

I think I've been up for maybe 36 hours now, with only 2-3 hours of sleep on the plane from Chicago to SF. Hardly ever been so exhausted at teh end of a show. I really did not even need more music, the 3 hours was a long ass time, and what a show!!!
New style Heavy Metal Machine kicked ass -- lots of pushing/moshing (I really didn't mind since I was close to the front anyway).
Silverfuck jam was sick
Gossamer is cool, but I can see where people are coming from that they wank on it a bit too much (30 mins tonoight). This was my first time ever hearing it (been avoiding the recordings). Jimmy's drum solo killed though
To Sheila was absolutely beautiful
Starla - Billy was great to watch on guitar. Same during Hummer
Someone yelled "SOMA!!!1" then someone else "I am One!!", and then they played Drown, which was just wonderful. Truly one of their most amazing songs.
The sound got better as the show went on. Billy mentioned that he thought there were some sound issues (in the back of the venue after the show). He only talked very briefly. Mentioned that they are thinking about South America dates in Nov/Dec.
Several fucking drunks yelled during the acoustic stuff, but it was fairly isolated. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned security telling someone to be quiet. I thought it was just fans, but I was center in front of Billy, this was to the left a bit. Suddenly we heard "shut the fuck up!!!!" to some guy. I guess he left, so that's good.
That's the way has way too much guitar going on, doesn't it??
God & Country may have been better the acoustic style how they played it tonight vs. the album version IMO.
Untitled - how can anyone not like this song?? It is so euphoric. First time hearing it live tonight, was pretty nice

Fillmore had a tapers section next to the soundboard and the guys said stands would be fine, but I didn't see anyone set up :(.
Who said that stands were OK? One of the guys who was planning to run hi-def video specifically asked at the door about using his tripod and mic stand, but they said NO. He said the tapers' section at Fillmore is always directly to the left of the soundboard, which is at the back of the floor, and didn't know why he wouldn't be allowed.
If you are going to more shows and can talk to more people there about letting stands in that'd be great. The taper I mentioned above will be back for several more dates.

So much for Geek USA, Ruby, and Soma...
yeah and i'm starting to get a bit annoyed
it doesn't make any sense to me why billy can't just whip out a new acoustic song every show or two
like soma acoustic would be cool and it would only take billy practicing it a few times to get it right...the rest of the band doesn't even need to be involved...i can think of a million songs that people would go absolutely nuts for if billy just stood there and did it acoustic...soothe, whir, this time, beautiful, etc
granted, he's already done this with rotten apples, daydream, the mercury tree, etc, but why not more?
but he'll probably bring out "french movie theme" or fucking "in my body" again before "ruby"

Pumpkins aren't quite Smashing during Fillmore opener
By Jim Harrington
MEDIANEWS
Article Launched: 07/16/2007 06:25:20 AM PDT
It was like a marathon within a marathon.
The Smashing Pumpkins opened their much-anticipated 11-night stand at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco -- the second longest run in the venue's fabled history -- with an epic three-hour show. The concert began at 10 p.m. Sunday and ended at 1:07 a.m.
Whew.
Like all marathons, some stretches were easier to take than others. When the band delivered the old hits, always in a tight, concise and tuneful manner that resembled the recorded versions, the concert was a breeze. Too often, however, it felt like we were running mile 26 over and over again as we listened to the group stretch out the new songs well past their worth.
In all, it was another self-indulgent evening in the life of Billy Corgan, the Pumpkins' leader who often seems to own the patent on self obsession.
Currently, he's driven to prove he still belongs among the A-list of rock stars -- something he failed to do with his two previous projects, the band Zwan and his own short-lived solo career. There's no doubt that he once belonged among that elite company, back when the Smashing Pumpkins were one of the biggest bands of the '90s.
But it's been all downhill for Corgan since the Pumpkins reached the pinnacle of their success with 1995's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," a nine-times-platinum work that ranks as the best-selling double-album of that decade. The band would go on to release two more albums -- 1998's "Adore" and 2000's
"Machina/The Machines of God," both of which were seen as commercial disappointments -- before disbanding in 2000.
It's the band's past glory, as well as the promise that it can reach greatness once again, which has people so excited about this lengthy Fillmore run. (The only act to conduct a longer stint was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who performed 20 nights at the Fillmore back in 1997.)
The Pumpkins face an uphill battle in trying to regain their former level of popularity. For one thing, this is really only half a reunion -- it features vocalist-guitarist Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, but not guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky.
Another factor is the harm that Corgan has done to the band's name -- since, really, the two are one and the same in most fans' minds -- with his unsuccessful solo career and the largely ignored Zwan.
Then there is the recently released comeback album, "Zeitgeist," which, based on Sunday's performance of the material, hardly sounds like a sure-fire blockbuster.
But there were moments when everything clicked between the crowd and the band, which now *******s guitarist Jeff Schroeder and bassist Ginger Reyes. Unfortunately, the first one didn't occur until 40 minutes into the set -- although it felt like much longer -- as the band finally played a hit, "Today'' from 1993's breakthrough effort "Siamese Dream." And, notably, the band played the tune the way it sounds on record.
Prior to that, we were given spaced-out, fuzzed-out, guitar-drenched odysseys that started to quickly wear down the crowd. It started with the opener as Corgan -- looking like a character from a Dr. Seuss book, shiny bald headed and dressed in all white except for some black stripes on his sleeves -- embarked on a voyage through the new album's "United States" that felt longer than a cross-country trip.
The band delivered similar treatments to semi-obscure tunes, like the "Machina" track "Blue Skies Bring Tears," as well as to songs that are so new they aren't even on "Zeitgeist."
The problem with many big-artist-plays-small-venue shows is that it often translates to a license for the act to play whatever it wants. The fans end up paying for the "privilege" by having to listen to a set that is very different (read: not as good) as what they would hear at a bigger venue. And, indeed, Corgan saw this Fillmore outing as something different than a regular show.
"Welcome to our band practice," he told the crowd.
On the plus side, the Smashing Pumpkins -- at least musically speaking -- don't sound like a group in need of much practice. The players were in fine form, especially on tracks like "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight."
As the band launched into its encore -- 30 minutes of highly improvised, barely enjoyable space rock -- it became painfully clear what it is this band needs.
A good editor.

Also sorry if people at home were upset about lack new any major bustouts in the setlist, but being my first show in 7 years (and tons of kids' first show ever), I wouldn't have cared if it was an exact copy of an Asheville setlist.
No one at the show was complaining about the setlist, at least around me.
If the run continues and some bustouts do not come, then yes I'll be a bit irked, but for a crowd that was largely new to SP 2007, it wasn't a factor at all

Has there ever been a concert reviewer that enjoyed long songs/jams? It is the easiest thing to pick on. I do agree that Gossamer had a bit too much wanking for its own good, but the "guitar odysseys" that preceded "Today" had no problems. Reviewers just love to jump on them because US is 9-10 mins long. Review pretty much sucked

i'm actually kind of dreading this show. especially bringing someone who's not so a huge fan. if i hate united states and find it unbearable, i can only imagine what it's like for someone who hasn't got a built in tolerance for bill's douchebaggery
"I taped last night. I looked around but couldn't see any other audio tapers. Of course, it's pretty dim in there. I can't imagine I was the only one.
There were several video tapers. I saw at least one up in the side balcony area and two on my side, which was the right side.
FYI, during the first song, security escorted me outside to the fire escape while they checked that in fact it was OK to tape that night. This was despite the fact there was a fucking video camera being run 10 feet from me. I would like to give a thanks to the obviously crack security supervisor for letting his troops know it was open taping."

this is the one thing that gets on my nerves with reviewers. i don't really care if they enjoy a show or not, but why do so many think that bigger venue shows equal better shows? usually those are just overproduced run-thorughs of the hits made for a quick score. i avoid those big venue shows and i think a lot more people do.

How many hit songs did Billy bring out? He played a couple of obscure machina tracks, but for the most part it was zeitgeist/hits/and cool obscure stuff (starla, rotten apples).
Not sure wtf the reviewer is talking about.

There was this really tall 6' 8" guy at the concert and there was a good four feet of space behind him since no one could see over him.

good point, especially since the show is just $25.00. It's not like we're paying $150 for an intimate night with the pumpkins. It's $25.00 for a close-up rock out. It's for real fans of the band, not reviewers.

I don't know about entry, but inside the venue, the security guys/soundboard guys were saying stands allowed in that taped off section next to the board. No one set up there, however...

I attended this show, and it wasn't great, I have to say. Setlist was pretty boring, 8 Zeitgeist songs played, and the picks were not the best that they did play. Billy's vocals were inaudible, as was Jeff's guitar and Ginger's bass was pretty low as well, much lower than Paz' in the Zwan era. Ginger looked like she wasn't enjoying herself much and was visibly bored at many points. Lisa is a horrendous player, I just can't believe that she is "with" the band. BC passed up Garson for this lady?! He would do well to bring back Melissa Auf Der Maur, who actually likes the songs, than some broad who's just collecting a paycheck, as well as Garson, who can actually play. Jeff was fine, he seems like he really tries and like he enjoys playing, he is a good James replacement but Ginger/Lisa MUST go. Billy didn't look like he was having much fun either...I guess those days are gone.

I skimmed most of the posts, and didn't see anyone mention this. Apologies if it was already brought up.
At the beginning of Lucky 13, Jimmy pounded out a measure of the main tom pattern, then paused and waited for applause. He did it a second time, then pointed his sticks out towards the crowd to egg them on, and more people started cheering. Meanwhile, Billy booed and gave Jimmy a thumbs down. Jimmy responded by flipping Billy off, and they both had a laugh.

Ugh. That review was awful. Does that guy have any idea what the idea behind the residencies is? He implies twice that it's preferable to hear songs the way they sound "on the record," bashes improvisation, and bitches that it took 40 minutes for the band to play a "hit."
Seriously. Fuck this guy.

Smashing Pumpkins reunite, in name only
Aidin Vaziri, Chronicle Pop Music Critic
Monday, July 16, 2007
(07-16) 12:27 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- If you squinted long and hard enough on Sunday, you might think you were watching an actual reunion of the Smashing Pumpkins, the unrepentant arena-rock act that sold millions of albums in the 1990s. In reality, it was just a passable crew of look-alikes frontman Billy Corgan had pulled together with the group's original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain, for the first of an 11-night run at the Fillmore. He even made sure their hair color matched the originals'.
After recording a solo album two years ago that was met with even more indifference than his first post-Pumpkins project, Zwan (both of which, incidentally, also featured Chamberlain), Corgan announced his intention to revive the group with a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune: "I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams." At least in name, he did. Guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky were either not invited or turned down the offer to relive past glories.
Some have suggested that Corgan just wants his old bank balance. Never mind that the depleted lineup for this reunion allows him to cut the staff salaries in half. Using a familiar brand to play in one city for two weeks seems like a great way to save on gas money.
The Smashing Pumpkins' comeback album, "Zeitgeist," meanwhile, arrived in stores last week with different bonus tracks for different retailers, meaning fans had to buy four versions of the LP if they wanted to hear all the new songs. That's one way to make sure it gets past Hannah Montana on the charts.
That didn't deter the hardcore fans from the Fillmore. Some even paid hundreds of dollars for tickets on Craigslist, which left very little for the $80 hoodies at the merchandise counter.
The band compensated by trudging through a three-hour-plus set on Sunday (and well into Monday) that *******d many of its most rare and popular songs but few of its actual best. Several of the tunes were saddled with long-winded guitar solos that not only stretched them beyond recognition but made them feel interchangeable.
Given that the Pumpkins made it through only three songs in the first half-hour, you had to wonder whether Corgan was actually being incredibly generous or just punishing all the people who'd yelled out for his old band's hits during his solo tour.
With his cleanly shaved head, white uniform and blank stare, the singer looked a bit like a mad scientist from some '40s horror movie. Playing against the backdrop of an electric cage (yes, despite all his rage) only confirmed the impression. "I'm not tuned into the zeitgeist tonight," he said early on. But that didn't stop him.
The new songs tried hard to capture the spirit of the old songs. Mostly, though, tracks like "Tarantula" and "Doomsday Clock" felt too restrained, too well oiled to compete with the simple angst of the band's best material.
Still, despite the lack of recognizable tunes, the first hour of the concert felt like an event. The second, built around a bland but pretty acoustic interlude and the airing of high school staples like "Disarm" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," was compelling enough to stand through. Watching Chamberlin bash the drums on the old songs alone seemed to justify pulling the name out of cold storage.
The third hour and beyond, however, were frankly wretched, as Corgan and company slogged through a completely joyless dirge that incessantly played on the Pumpkins' infamous loud-quiet-loud dynamic. At one point it looked as if the band itself -- with new recruits guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Ginger Reyes and keyboardist Lisa Harriton -- was ready to nod off.
By midnight the lobby of the Fillmore was just as crowded as the main floor. About an hour later, with no end in sight to the infernal jamming onstage, the singer came up for air to taunt in his most nasally register, "You ain't going anywhere! You ain't going anywhere! You ain't going anywhere!"
It seemed like a challenge too good to pass up. It's quite possible the Smashing Pumpkins -- in one form or another -- are still playing the same horrible funeral hymn at this very moment.

It was more like two feet and I can't help my height... ;) I tried to let a few peeps in front to lessen the effect, but sadly my only other option is to stand in the back which makes no sense when you wait 12 hours to get in.
FYI I wasn't particularly impressed with the show...IMO Zwan and the solo gigs were better.

I agree with this, generally, that Billy doesn't make it clear...that he doesn't differentiate sharply between people who show up and people who don't, between loyal fans and the people who stopped watching in '98 because Adore didn't "rock". Then again, he can't help but notice when the hits get a much larger response than the later songs. I think the crowds at these shows have both groups - and so he says both things, he gets angry at the crowd and praises the crowd, often in the same show. Maybe he is figuring that if what he says is meant for you, you'll know it, and if it's not you'll know that too.
Smashing Pumpkins play first West Coast show in seven years
The re-formed group plays a three hour show.
Jul 7, 2007
By Richard Cromelin, Times Staff Writer
SAN FRANCISCO — Only half of the band's original members are in the reconstituted Smashing Pumpkins, and the group's new album doesn't sound a lot like its old ones, but a capacity crowd got the full-spectrum Pumpkins experience — challenging, indulgent, celestial, meandering — at the Fillmore Auditorium here, where the predominant alt-rock band of the 1990s played its first West Coast concert since 2000 on Sunday.
The end of the seven-year hiatus came in the form of a three-hour show packed with the kind of dynamics — if not the dramatics — associated with singer-guitarist Billy Corgan, who peppered the set with Pumpkins staples, including "Today," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Disarm," yet never allowed nostalgia to become the point.
There were too many new songs and Pumpkins obscurities for that, and the musicians played everything with an enveloping, epic force that demanded full and immediate attention.
Leaving guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky behind, Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are the only holdovers, a creative core that continued to work together on other projects, including Zwan and the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, after the Pumpkins disbanded amid personal tensions in 2000.
But a different dynamic clearly kicks in when the Pumpkins are revived, and while the new album, "Zeitgeist" — which they recorded together before hiring guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Ginger Reyes and keyboardist Lisa Harriton as their new bandmates — might not feature their most eloquent songwriting, its metal-edged rock power links it to the Pumpkins' past while turning the music in a new direction.
Though the Chicago-based group was always identified with independent or alternative rock, there was a lot of mainstream and progressive music in its makeup, and Corgan clearly still loves the grandeur of arena rock. Pushed by Chamberlin's distinctive, assertive drumming, he spent much of Sunday's set unfurling long solos — some lyrical, some slashing and ragged.
But he also values rock's spirit of experimentation, and there were times when the band seemed to be saluting the musical liberation that was generated in this shrine of psychedelia during the Summer of Love, which is now getting a big run on its 40th anniversary. Corgan and company dropped in a bit of the Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," and during the encore he and Schroeder interlocked on a stratospheric spiral, while Harriton inserted some Doors-like keyboard lines.
With the emphasis firmly on the music, Corgan seemed less interested in playing the messianic misfit rock hero, a role he occupied the first time around and one that has been assumed by such prominent members of the younger generation as Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance.
Strikingly tall, head shaved, dressed in white with dark bands on his long sleeves, Corgan looked like a Dr. Seuss version of Nosferatu, and most of his few remarks were offhand and jokey.
"Welcome to our band practice," he said with a laugh after a momentary onstage glitch. Later, possibly noting the crowd's response to the new album, he sarcastically thanked "the seven of you who have actually bought it."
Actually, a bit more of that petulance, or any kind of vivid emotion, would have been welcome. This new lineup might have musical possibilities, but it doesn't have much chemistry or personality onstage yet, and there was very little interaction among the players.
Corgan and Chamberlin, positioned close together and united by the lighting and their white outfits, seemed to dwarf their new partners, who filled their roles without asserting themselves or challenging the status quo. That's one reason that things tended to get repetitive, despite the fairly varied repertoire.
The sold-out series of 11 Fillmore shows, which ends Aug. 1, is the band's second U.S. residency following a run in North Carolina. A full-fledged tour starts soon. No Los Angeles shows have been announced, though there are open dates before and after their Sept. 9 concert in San Diego.
