Anyone care to take a guess at how long their set will be? I was originally planning on going to this, but the 20 minute Live Earth set kind of ruined me for festivals for the time being. I mean, I know Live Earth was a whole different kind of deal, but I still don't want to spend a whole bunch of money on hearing five or six songs...
Eh, what am I saying. I'll end up there anyway, no matter what.

i went last year, it was amazing, i said i would go again this year even if i didnt like any of the bands.
it was the most well put together festival i had ever been to and ive been to all of the major ones.
i say we have a sunday morning breakfast for netphoria people.
i live about 10 minutes from pimlico, so i will try to find someplace good, we will get a head count of all of those interested as it gets closer.

Show was fucking awesome, a tad disappointed that there was no encore though. The band was in a great mood and really playing off the crowd. Much better performance then the 9:30 club show. I ended up finding my old recording rig so I taped the show. Listening to it now, not too bad. Pretty decent recording so far seeing as it was an open air festival setting. There was a lot of talkers and singers around me, but hey at least it got recorded. I hope some one else taped it as well. The recording has a couple of skips in it due to the rough crowd and crowd surfers. I will hopefully transfer it and upload it to the archive sometime this week not sure when I will get a chance. United States

It pretty much rained the whole set but it felt so good. It was really pouring during tarunrual and Bolly kept laughing during the pouring rain parts of the song. Defiantly worth the money, and I am so glad I found my recording rig because it didn't turn out half that bad. Not as good as some of the residency high end rigs but defiantly good for a festival other then the singers I had around me for the popular songs like zero, tonight tonight bwbw etc. . HMM was defiantly probably the best version i ever heard. My only gripe is no muzzle, silverfuck, untitled or cherub rock. I think the rain kept them from the encore. It was coming down pretty hard then. Oh well I will post again when I get the recording up. I hope every one had a great time...

First time I've ever been able to see them. I wasn't thinking it was going to be that good since it was a festival, but damn was I wrong. We were able to get right up front and in the center. Crowd was amazing, really into it with a lot of energy. A lotttt of jumping around and pushing into each other. And it seemed like everyone knew the words to every song and was singing, especially Today. Seemed totally different from all of the standing still crowds I've seen in all the videos from the concerts since Paris. The total intensity level just jumped a 100 notches when the pumpkins were on compared to all of the other acts. The crowd was no where near into anyone like they were the Smashing Pumpkins.
Highlights:
-Finally coming out onto stage and getting into United States. It was so great that the moment of finally seeing them live had arrived and I was right in front of the stage.
-When Billy said, "The next song is an old song, I wrote it when I was on mushrooms." I immediately yelled out, "Yeahh!! Starla!!" My favorite song period, not just smashing pumpkins, but favorite song. The one song that I have wanted to see played live at least once in my life. And then he started to play it was just greatness.
-I was yelling at Ginger calling her name for a few songs. Finally I ended up near 3-4 other guys who were also yelling for her, and one of them said, "Ok on 3 everyone yell her name." We did it and finally got achknowledged by her. And speaking of Ginger, holy fucking shit. She looked amazing tonight, flat out amazing. She was wearing her really nice outfit where you can see her ass, and she was riding her bass, it was one of the sexiest things I have ever seen in my life.

aaaah had to of loved the crowd surfers. I dragged 1 of them down, and punched 4 others in the kidney. And then there was the big black guy smoking pot who wouldnt put down his umbrella, and his abnormally large girl friend sporting a giant obtrusive hat..... oh and the frat boys who charged up to the front only to discover they needed the bathroom....and the 200 or so folks who "mysteriously" left during death from above.... Dont forget I was there hitting drunk people. Real great crowd :)

I hope every one had a great time...

man that HMM was fucking mindblowing.
yeah the new version rips!!! Jeff!!!!!!
they had full control of the crowd the whole time, was an amazing set.
Great to hear this... during Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza tonight I was pondering how well SP could/would control a crowd of that size even in Chicago...
Thanks for taping glued_on_wings!!

Yeah, I was in the front about 3 rows back, right near to Billy... god the crowd was crazy and I loved it :) Definitely a big difference from the residencies in that regard (as I expected, no Hoped, it would be).
Tell more... lots of crowd surfers, or people actually going crazy for the music? Either way good to have high energy for sure

great setlist for the crowd. i had some idiot near me talking thw hole time when he didn't know the songs.
superchrist was awesome, but no one knew it so it fell on deaf ears a little. DFA was great, but the crowd was so pumpked that it was a big "speed bump". loved the HMM ending, but wished they capped it off with a song everyone knew, or maybe Starz or something fun.
overall, GREAT show. my friend is a huge Police fan and she was blown away by the performance. having the extra lights on stage was great too. they really blew the top off of that place!

Tell more... lots of crowd surfers, or people actually going crazy for the music? Either way good to have high energy for sure
The whole crowd was rocking/pushing back and forth together... I have never been to a festival show before but I knew to expect it to be pretty intense at the front. If I hadn't watched the show so many times at the residencies I wouldn't have liked it, but at this point I've seen them a lot and I was there last night for different reasons ;) Since I am so small I didn't even have to stand up. The crowd was pushed in so tight I just let my weight rest on all the people around me and got jostled all around. Good times :smoke: There were a few crowd surfers until Tonight, Tonight... then it was just a steady stream of them it seemed like. I got kicked in the head and ducked down, but when I went to stand back up my space was gone, LOL. I went out to the edge and watched the rest of the show from there and danced around like a crazy person. Especially during HMM... GO JEFF!!
The only annoying thing about HMM was that the camera guys kept shooting Billy during all of Jeff's solo's. Most people probably didn't know that Jeff was playing them.

Here is the review from the local paper (http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/bal-to.virgin06aug06,0,7561136.story?page=2)
Relevant parts excised for your convenience (also, the reviewer is a douche):
"The Smashing Pumpkins closed Virgin Festival on the north stage with a rambling, disjointed show whose sonic template was pulled from the bloated Zeitgeist, the band's latest album, released last month. For all intents and purposes, it was the Billy Corgan show, as he led the newly re-formed group through songs that were little more than overcooked, interlocking guitar riffs and pummeling drums.
Even songs from the Pumpkins' golden era, such as 1993's "Today," were given the Zeitgeist treatment, in which Corgan and his band- mates buried the melody beneath a web of showy, wailing riffs.
But the band pulled back toward the middle of the show on the stark piano ballad, "Death from Above," the B-side of the latest single, "Tarantula." Corgan whined his way through the song. It was almost insufferable, but it was still better than the overreaching rock grandiosity of the show's earlier half."

It was an incredible show, crowd (at least everyone around me) was really into it. I was on Ginger's side of the stage and fairly close up. There were tons of crowd surfers, got kicked several times and had two people practically fall on me. They sounded incredible, HMM was mindblowing!!! Sure I wish they had done an encore but I think it would have been hard to top HMM the way they played, I was blown away by both Billy and Jeff's performances and loved it when they played back to back, I could see Billy smiling and having a good time with it. I would be interested to find out what the size of the crowd was overall because I was too close to see how big it was and if a lot of people were really into it instead of just all the hardcore fans toward the front.

That guy from the Baltimore Sun has no idea what he's talking about, clearly he wasn't watching the same show I was. This really doesn't bother me too much though because I know The Washington Post pans pretty much everything so it's hard to take them seriously. I will be pissed if Interpol for example got a great review, I seriously felt like taking a nap during their set.

Great show overall, enjoyed it much more than the 930 show. Got there around one oclock, checked out matisyahu and explosions in the sky (who were fucking incredible), then chilled out, waited for the yeah yeah yeahs to finish and tried to jostle up as far as i could for interpol and the pumpkins.
crowd was predictably pretty crazy, not so much moshing as just pushing into each other and a LOT of crowd surfing. highlights for me were definetly starla and to shelia. REALLY wanted an encore, while HMM was really fucking kickass (probably the best version i've heard) i didn't want it for the close. great show.

That review is so amazingly ridiculous. I was about 50 feet back from Billy. I gotta say this is the best I've seen the band. They were literally perfect! The sound was perfect at Pimlico. They sounded better than they did at the Orange Peel. This version of Heavy Metal Machine was a great ending I thought. The crowd was really into it, the band was into it. Billy wasn't even complaining about lack of sales or anything it was just a really great show. Superchrist blew me away. It was my first time hearing it. Also I didn't mind DFA and 1979 was great to hear they didn't play that when I saw them in Asheville. What do these reviewers want? Is it just cool to rag on Billy every chance you get?
Other highlights for me were Fountains of Wayne, very short set but fun. The Beastie Boys tore it up, they were really great. The Police were on top of things, sounded great. Panic! believe it or not were pretty good too. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were amazing! Great 2 days.

In introducing Starla, Billy said he wrote this song at a time when he was doing a lot of mushrooms. Then he said, "not that I condone drug use, but if you're on mushrooms right now, this song should sound good to you." There seemed to be a good crowd response at the mention of mushrooms. There were several people smoking weed near me.
Final act Smashing Pumpkins started with the Star Spangled Banner sample that bled into United States, from their latest album, then launched into crowd favorite Today and new song For God and Country. They sounded extremely distortion-heavy -- screeching guitars, weighty reverb, energetic. While they did not connect with the Live Earth crowd, they connected to this crowd.
then migrated to the North Stage for Smashing Pumpkins’ headlining slot, which was a great reminder that Billy Corgan and Co. are still built to rock hard and loud in front of tens of thousands at epic outdoor concerts. The set, which *******d Corgan’s chilling version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” was powerful and striking, and classics like “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” “Today,” “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979” served as reminders of the Pumpkins enduring dexterity and power on the big stages.
The second 10-hour day of music was wrapped under soggy conditions with the recently revived Smashing Pumpkins.
The band's two originals -- chrome-domed singer Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin -- were joined by Jeff Schroeder and Ginger Reyes on guitar and bass, and opened its set with the cacophonous "United States" just as the rain tapered off. The song eventually trailed into a screeching guitar solo of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Corgan's familiar throaty croak and heavy, squealing guitars rendered "Zero" almost unlistenable, but "Today" sounded clear and bright.
Though the Pumpkins just released "Zeitgeist," their first new album since 1999, Corgan and Co. didn't neglect the oldies. "Siamese Dream," "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight" were met with thousands of raised beer cups and whoops from the damp crowd.
The Smashing Pumpkins closed the show Sunday night, combining songs from their reunion album, such as United States and For God and Country, with such old favorites as Today.

I was up in the front but way over on the right side, and when they were setting up they brought out 3 huge lights on both sides of the stage which completely blocked our view. The crowd chanted "move the lights" for about 15 minutes and finally the stage crew came out and moved them further to the side. Score. It was a great performance, very energetic. I was happy to see the crowd get really into it and all of the people around me were singing along. I wasn't sure if it was just because I was right up in the front with all of the hardcore fans but I had friends who watched from way in the back and said the whole crowd was going crazy. And everyone cheered for an encore for a while but I'm sure the rain had a lot to do with them not coming back out. Overall I was really impressed, the band seemed like they were having a great time. I thought seeing them in Asheville was incredible and it was fun to see them at a much different type of show this time (I also went to Live Earth but I'm not even going to compare that to a real SP set.) I'm even more excited for the fall tour now.

there was no encore because virginfest made deal with the neighborhood to have no music past 10. it was shitty that 311 was still playing when the pumpkins finished...i must admit.
i do have to say this about encores at festivals: when you know a band has a time slot and they finish 15 minutes early, they don't put on the stage lights, and none of the crew comes out, you know you are getting an encore!
the police and beastie boys were guilty of this and it was more than a little cheesy. you already knew they were coming back, so what was the point of cheering?! i liked how the pumpkins melted your face for their time slot and then ended it. why stop the ride for a dumb break? i figure we got an extra song or two by them not wasting time for encores. besides what could top the HMM ending?!

Such a shitty neighborhood though. We didn't feel like paying 20 bucks for parking so we parked about a block or two into it in this free parking lot. No lie, once crossing the street saw some guy pull his girlfriend out of the mini van on the street and start yelling at her and pushing her around. And than have another random ass guy follow us to our car asking for a dollar for a slice of pizza. That race course is built in the middle of a huge shit hole.

holy shit! this was my first pumpkins show and the greatest concert i've ever been to! it was amazing, me and my fiance were to the right side, up in the very front pushed against the baracade for most of the set. i couldnt believe we were so fucking close! billy was like 20some feet away it was insane!!! it was so great to see him smile so much. and the RAIN! oh so pretty :) i loved it when he giggled during turantula too! to sheila was great and doomsday clock blew my mind! zero and that HMM ending!! oh and SIYL, and tonite tonite!!! oh man everything was great. the crowd, although freckled with the occasional asshole, was awesome! everyone sang along and rocked out, im glad it wasnt a seated show, and im sure the band is too, wouldnt you wanna see your audience's physical reaction to your music?!? every song was so damn powerful! i was like screamin and cryin and belting out every word to every song. yea, i've been waitin for that for a long time.... ive tripped soo many times to a playlist of 4000+ live SP mp3s and flacs for hours and hours for years, and now, we finally got to see them! oh my life is complete. it was magical. :) all i can do is smile! and i got tix to 2 of the philly shows (so far) I CANT WAIT!!!!!
if you wanna see the short video i took during HMM heres a link ->
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=15166143
and theres some good pics of billy in my pics there
and wutang clan rocked the place, beastie boys were nuts, incubus as good as i expected, police were awesome, Panic at the disco mentioned something about "all the zero shirts" :) and those explosions in the sky guys were really good, made it a point to check them out since i'll be seeing them again ;) overall the whole festival was awesome, very chill atmosphere, no asshole security, you were allowed to bring in all kinds of stuff. it was hot, but that meant tits and ass everywhere! it rained only at the ideal moments, and that mile long stretch of food vendors and bars was incredible haha tons of stuff to do and 70,000+ cool people to do it with. best damn vacation of my life!!!!

I have to say, it is nice to read such overwhelmingly positive reviews for a festival set. Usually whatever happens at a fest show is "well the crowd was too drunk, and it was too hot, etc, so I don't really blame them for [whatever]". Sounds like SP owned it old school

It's not arrogant, I've been to Baltimore easily 15 times and been all over the town. Outside of the Inner Harbor/Little Italy, it's an awful, awful place. Mind you, I have no problem hanging out in Washington DC, but Baltimore is more sketchy by-and-large then any other major metropolitan area I've ever been in, and I'm from Detroit. No offense intended to any Marylanders, there are many nice areas in Annapolis, Howard County, or Montgomery County, but Baltimore itself is really terrible. There's a reason it's jokingly named "Charm City."

The pumpkins were soooooooooooooooooo fucking bad ass. I was wearing a green zeitgeist tour shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes that turned brown very quickly. I was next to this foreign guy who wasn't wearing a shirt and let me drink some of his water. I am nothing short of absolutely fucking amazed at the time I had. I was about 3 rows from the front (towards the middle of the set), and I probably got kicked in the head by at least 15 crowd surfers, but my heart was beating so fast as this was the first time I had seen the pumpkins live. I knew they were going to open with united states, I love that song. The crowd was monstrous, though if you had asked anybody if they were an sp fan earlier in the day, it was hard to point them out.... It was definetly worth the flight. See u in atl!!!!!

I was with two other dudes, but saw a small group with some females walking too. They are nuts.
Good things about Baltimore:
Johns Hopkins Hospital - They saved my brother's life.
The Aquarium
8X10 Club & Fletcher's
Nacho Mamma's
That's it. RamsHead is the worst live music venue in America. It's impossible to see. I feel safer in Anacostia than most of Baltimore.

Indeed I am, I'm working as a steward for the charity Oxfam :) I did it last year and met a few girls who were also stewarding and are doing it this year. So if my work clashes with the Pumpkins then there's the chance I could try and get them to swap shifts with me. If I'm terrifically unlucky and can't manage that then well... we'll see how it goes! Won't find out till I get there anyway :) Not fussed about missing all the other bands on the other two days really.
Make sure you bring wellies Davin or see how the conditions are on site before you go... the weather is nicer now, but this summer has been very wet, and the river next to the site broke its banks a few weeks ago meaning 30% of the campsites ended up underwater! I don't know if you've been to an English festival before, but you should be prepared for the possibility of mud! Always a pleasure to meet a fellow fan, if you fancy a pint then give me a shout

We did it and finally got achknowledged by her. And speaking of Ginger, holy fucking shit. She looked amazing tonight, flat out amazing. She was wearing her really nice outfit where you can see her ass, and she was riding her bass, it was one of the sexiest things I have ever seen in my life.

my parents are both from right outside baltimore.
they have never lived within 250 miles of the place since leaving home.
The Smashing Pumpkins closed the show Sunday night, combining songs from their reunion album, such as United States and For God and Country, with such old favorites as Today.
yeah so my mom saw the usatoday article and gave it to me today, whomever wrote that must really have their head up their asses or where not even at the festival. amy whinehouse sucked balls and baltimore paper's headline was "at least she showed up"

So it would be pretty hard for Baltimore (or any city) to not have a higher murder rate.

....but "per capita" eliminates any consideration of size, since it's... uh... "per person". So, no, it doesn't really say anything about Baltimore, other than it's less safe than the absolute safest big city in the country. Think about that. You are basically calling every city except New York a shithole, because by default they are all smaller and all have higher crime rates. Until you come back and say, "look, Baltimore has the worst per capita crime rate" and not "it's worse than New York," all you are proving is that you don't understand statistics.

Good stuff, I'll sure you'll have a great day. It's a shame the band aren't playing Glastonbury as that blows Reading out of the water in terms of music, vibe, decor, etc, but there we go! Reading is a fun time, a very 'rock' festival (if you will) in terms of atmosphere... Good call on the B&B as well - the campsite gets quite rowdy for the last night, in previous years they've had problems with people getting severely injured after blowing up gas canisters, etc...

I personally think cabbage's sounds more crisp if you will, but the sound on mine defiantly sounds closer and not as distant especially the acoustic set. The tape itself is flawed with skips in a couple of spots due to being pushed around, and there are load singers near by most notably on BWBW. Stream it and decide for yourself that is how I have been picking what recordings to download off of archive. :)
