View Full Version : What is the definitive track from Siamese Dream?

Dork USA

Which track represents the sound of that record, and the Pumpkins' sound in general, from that album?

I gotta go with Hummer. Not my favorite pumpkins song, but surely one of their more representative works.

This can be from any album, actually. I just think Hummer reps the early pumpkins the best, but still all those albums are so different its really hard to say the pumpkins have a definitive sound....

The drumming definitely drives the sound on that one. I used to not be such a fan, but i literally like it more each time i listen to it. Its now one of my fave songs ever.

I think the only songs with better drumming are jellybelly, possibly siva, and possibly silverfuck. Am I missing any?

Hummer is probably more indicative of their overall sound, but Geek USA is the crown jewel.

Hard to say though, the entire album gets me off.

i wouldn't say geek mostly because that tune is a straight foward metal barn burner (with it's little reset in the middle).. the heaviest song on the record, so i wouldn't say it represents SD as a whole.

Hummer has a bit of everything, the metal, the mellow, the spacey vibe, a bit of the jamming, the angst and the hope that pretty much sums up all of SD.

So i'd say Hummer.

Soma sort of come close but the reason i would discount it as the definitive track is the fact that it's so hopeless. A lot of SD songs have hope.

Hummer, again has a bit of both the hopelessness and hope going on, so again, it wins the definitive title.

Impossible?? all the songs share so many similarities and sounds from that period.
Soma, Geek U.S.A, silverfuck, Hummer all have very similar qualities to me. I like SD discussion threads, it just makes you think off all those great songs, great times and makes you wanna get the CD out from it's old battered case....i'm getting all misty eyed

I guess I would agree that Hummer is the most encompassing of what they were doing then. But I would say that Geek USA THE song that only the smashing pumpkins could have written, and I can't think of a comparable song.

Hummer does the best job of covering all the band's sonic areas. It is like the entire album in miniature.

What's hilarious about this thread is that we both post at the SCB, which was at one time greater than this board, but now not so much. And that kinda demeans it a lot since this board has gone to shit since the rating-users system went away.

I don't know how you figure that since two users single handedly abused the system to the point where it made no difference how far in the red you were.
