i know that when it'd been released it had pretty much just been recorded. and i know that by the time it was on the greatest hits the band had been dead for almost a year. and i know that "virgin wasn't supporting, blablabla..."
but, i think that if untitled had a video released with it... a kind of montage of s+p and resume the pose live clips, meet and greet clips and stuff like that. sure, it's cheesy. but i dunno... i think it woulda been a more suited farewell. or something.

There was a video, and it was basically a montage of the band.

it doesn't count. it wasn't released, really. i mean, it was on the dvd but it was a pain in the ass to find. i mean, if it'd been like played on tv, even a couple of times.

the montage video is what i was expecting the "try" video to be, and in my opinion, it is way, way better than the studio video on the dvd. i need to find one of those sampler dvds with the montage vid on it.

Although I think a montage would have been great, I support the idea of shooting an in-studio video just for the DVD. You just kind of see Billy, James, and Jimmy hanging out and doing their thing in the studio. I like the fact that it isn't so dramatic. I think it captures a rather cool essence that people hadn't known existed with the Smashing Pumpkins. It's just them relaxing/recording a song...I think a farewell showing all the "highlights" from their career wouldn't have the same intimacy.
The song was, after all, recorded for the FANS, the REAL, TRUE FANS who stood by the Pumpkins all those years. It wasn't intended for anyone else. A highlights show kinda feels...I don't know...just very COMMERCIAL for me. *shrugs*
But that's just my feeling.

The DVD one was just the remainder of sp in the studio. The video clip played on music channels was a montage of old clips (I spotted the clowns in there at one point), with shots of signings and stuff... basically what you were thinking of, but not done too well. There were too many shots of Billy singing in the studio, and some crappy 'WOO OSCILLOSCOPE!!' effects stuck on there for no reason. It wasn't quite up to Mayo on Vieuphoria, put it that way

Oh I totally disagree with you on that. I loved the montage video - they did a good job of making it look like they were actually playing Untitled at all those concerts when of course they weren't, and those RTP clips are really nice and cool. And I barely even notice the oscilloscope effects. It was like completely how I imagined it to be.

i saw the video on muchmusic, shaunna. once, but yeah. and it was played semi-often on the radio here for a couple months. but you're kinda right, the fact that it was played a bit means it could've been a great hit given the full promo treatment. although unreleased tracks on greatest hit discs are always duds.

I still have the video on my computer, way better than the DVD version.

I like the Untitled video on the DVD as what its intended to be - a cool little DVD extra. For as far as Easter Eggs go, its pretty freakin sweet. (though not up there with Jason Mewes balls' on the DVD of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back")
But, I really wish the promo cut of Untitled had been on the DVD separately. I personally love it. I think its better than the Easter Egg Untitled cut and the Vieuphoria Mayonnaise vid just because it shows the entire history of the band, beginning to end, mushed together into one clip. Quite frankly, ever since I first heard Untitled a year before I thought "Man, I'd be so cool if they release a final-band-montage video" (well, maybe not those exact words but you get my point).
But yeah, even though the video & single were pretty much a dud I think it works great for what it was intended to be - a love note, thank you and goodbye to all the fans of SP. Certainly a better way to end the band instead of something like Billy dying while eating a twinkie one day.
