my friend george was into a lot of garage punk, garage rock revival, broken blues, etc and gave me a few suggestions that i never gave a good listen until after he died, so i can't ask him for more suggestions :(
stuff i like:
beehive and the barracudas
the mummies
the gossip
the husbands
the dirt bombs
early white stripes
man or astroman
starlite desperation
the black keys
i really enjoy the ultra lofi / noisy sounding stuff the most
any other suggestions?

Not technically garage rock, but The Microphones are uber lo-fi
i've never heard of the mummies but they sound awesome just name alone
i hope they are some crazy punk garage band thing with like...horror movie interludes and fucked up lyrics and crazy pounding drums and screaming
i will never listen to this band, they are better in my head than they could ever be in real life

there's very little garage rock in this thread besides charmbag's contribution, i think
you want to check out:
13th floor elevators
the kinks
the troggs
the kingsmen
the sonics
man, just get nuggets
as for more recent stuff:, definitely check out the oblivians
but by far the best garage rock band in the world right now is the black lips (though i fear they may turn shitty soon because they're on fuckin vice now). but you should get 'let it bloom' i swear it's one of the best garage rock records of all time

just buy anything that's come outta detroit in the last, say, 20 years...
13th floor elevators, the kinks, the troggs, the kingsmen, the sonics...
that's not a recommendation it's a history lesson...
"you guys like garage have you heard the kills?"
