Perfume: Story of a Murderer - Found this pretty unique, it became a weird fairytale for me towards the end, but I can understand why people think it falls apart. <img src="http://forums.netphoria.org/images/rating/rating_4.gif">
Pick of Destiny - I thought this looked awful and was shocked that the wife had rented it, but it actually turned out ok. <img src="http://forums.netphoria.org/images/rating/rating_3.gif">
The Hitcher (original) - I just had to rewatch this to remind myself why I was never going to watch the Sean Bean one. Hauer is awesome. <img src="http://forums.netphoria.org/images/rating/rating_4.gif">

Pan's Labyrinth - C, was expecting more of the fantasy stuff, and not a WWII drama...felt like they needed to pick one and go with it. The captain guy was an excellent actor, though.

good cop bon cop - should just come with a disclaimer saying "warning, contains embarrasing parts that cram canadiana in your face, cringe and forget they happen"... otherwise good and worth seeing
paradise now - great acting, reallllly slow paced though
shortbus - gets props for actually testing taste/porn limits and then not completley sucking. thought it at least had a good original story in there but was lost in bad/overly arty directing/acting... turned my gf on so thats good... still might as well get porn
knocked up - classic, wayyyyy better than 40 yr old virgin... not convincing enough that she would give him the time of day though

Oh yeah! Man, what's with me? All I do these days is play video games, watch movies and go to the occasionall ball game. Why can't I do something as simple as remember what movies I've seen? I watched Deja Vu with a killer hangover and still managed to be enthralled, although I do have a serious problem with almost every use of time travel in a movie ever. barely. it was an above-average comic book movie, which is not saying much. in retrospect i probably would have wanted to see it on DVD instead of spending 8 bucks.
I liked Spiderman 3, the corny Venom shit was cute- in a comic book way.

The only comics movies that have been really good are Batman Begins and Sin City. One could argue stuff like Road to Perdition and History of Violence of well but that's getting into graphic novels that don't feature superheroes.

Hey Trots,
I had the exact same misgivings as you before I watched Children of Men. The best thing about it is a few skillfully executed action set pieces that are well worth seeing. I enjoyed the film but it is in no way the classic that some people are making it out to be in my opinion.

Found an hilarious customer review of this on amazon entitled pretentious twaddle:
"John Lennon loved this film, and he married Yoko Ono and allowed the Plastic Ono Band to roam the earth. Enough said. I watched Children of Men and immediately after I was somewhat blown-away.
Then after a few days of thinking about it and pondering it I realized there was a lot of stuff I didn't like about it.
Immediately after I would have given it like a A- but now thinking about it it's like a B.
I'm not sure exactly what the point of this is, but this movie has a ceratin significance for me. One of the figures, Robert Soloman, was one of my lecturers last year. He made a huge impact and was very influential, and then I found out in January that he''d passed away. When I saw the film I realised that a big chunk of his monologue was actually the same as one of the lecturers he gave, so it was kind of special to be able to hear him saying that stuff again.
And yeah this is gay as hell, but fuck it.

ive seen quite a few movies recently in between weddings and awesome 4th of julyness
the fountain - B. well, i saw what was trying to be done with the entire 3 storylines, but i think it was a bit excessive. its creative, but not really necessarily. interesting, but a bit much.
evan almighty - B. fun movie. wasnt really as funny as bruce almighty, but moreso just fun. the effects with the animals were cool, and they better have been because i heard this movie cost a fortune.
ratatouille - A+. another pixar gem. just a great, awesome movie that i couldnt stop smiling to. maybe the funniest pixar movie yet.
transformers - A. the visual effects in this movie were so seamless and real that i have to give it a good grade. i hardly paid attention to any sort of storyline, but the last hour of action was just mindblowing. plus the chick is smoking and maybe a couple of kids will start listening to the strokes on their apple computers while rationalizing the war in iraq.
blood diamond - A. dicaprio is officially a badass. who knew that the titanic kid was such a great actor? the accent was silly at times but he was like from zimbabwe and white? some weird mix? so who knows how those people talk. connelly, as usual, was beautiful and brilliant, and the black dude was probably the best of the bunch. (maybe) this movie was great, loved it.

1408 - A
Genuinely frightening movie with a PG-13 rating. First movie I've ever covered my eyes at, and I was practically raised on horror movies. Aesthetically, it's very beautiful. Cusack does a great job of going through the motions, from a disillusioned hack to a little spooked to straight-up terrified to "fuck this shit!"
Live Free or Die Hard - B
It seems I liked this movie for all the reasons everyone didn't. I didn't miss the cursing, thought Justin Long was fantastic and loved McClane's disposition throughout the whole film, especially the little cackles of victory he'd let out from time to time. It got a little corny at times with some of the one-liners but they didn't bother me, and I can't say I didn't expect them to be present.
Braveheart - A
I can't believe I saw this for the first time last night. What's wrong with me? This movie is everything every shitty epic war movie (300) has ever tried to be. I felt great love for many of the characters, and great hatred for the antagonists. When he was betrayed, I felt betrayed. Signs of a quality movie.
The New World - C (tentatively)
I couldn't finish watching this movie, I was getting super restless. It was beautiful, no doubt, but for the mood I was in it felt a bit boring. Maybe it is a boring film and I'll discover that when I go to watch the last half.
Zoolander - A+
We've been watching this movie a lot the past few months. Sometimes we just like to turn it on and watch the first/last half before going to bed. Seriously, one of the few flawless comedies, and I'm disgusted to be part of a family tree where certain nameless individuals not only haven't seen it, but also refuse to see it. :noway:
I think today I'm going to watch Jesus Camp. Anyone seen it?

Zoolander is easily one of my favorite movies. its just so quoteable.
"Blue steal? La Tigra? Its all one look for Christ's sake! I feel like Im taking crazy pills!"
I think the most recent movie Ive seen is Bulletproof. I had never seen the unedited version and its just so butchered on TV , so I downloaded it. Damon Waynes and Adam Sandler - has some silly parts but still kinda crap. just for the fact that ive been waiting to see this so long i would probably give it a B-.

Garbage movie. Michael Bay is one of the worst directors of all time, with the story telling skills of a 12 year old. Anybody that truly likes this movie is way to easily amused. Once the novelty of the impressive special efx wore off I had trouble staying awake. I think actual episodes of the cartoon had a more coherent and believable storyline than this movie.

Weak plot line?
Yes, but it's a lot more than that. I mean...I can't really think of any element that goes into a making a good movie that Transformers succeeded at. The only high points were Shia was pretty good/likable and there was one scene that was truly warm and funny and entertaining (the one with the autobots tiptoeing around the house while shia's searching for the glasses - and even that was ruined by the stupid masturbation joke) but everything else I can think of was pretty much 100% fail.

This review nails on the head the weaknesses of the movie:
http://fienprint.blogspot.com/2007/07/moviewatch-transformers.html
EXCERPTS:
As dazzled as I often was by the visual effects in "Transformers," I never cared if the heroes succeeded (and, since they were only facing CGI blobs that never felt real for a second, I never felt that any of them were in danger). What's worse is that I never cared if the Decepticons were defeated.
In order to root against a villain, at least so far as I understand it, the villain's opposition to good or moral action has to be clearly understood. If a villain is out to kill humanity, you have to both understand why the villain wants to do away with humanity and feel that the desire is based on an actual hatred. For my money, "Transformers" don't work in large part because the Decepticons don't really care about humans. They don't care about global destruction. They care about an inanimate cube. Humans are collateral damage, but they lack the requisite reason for destroying Earth and its inhabitants. They don't hate us, so we don't fear them. I know that they were going to bring all of our machines to life or enslave us, but the movie gives less than a minute's time to illustrating that potentiality.
Oh no! Our Mountain Dew machines would come to life?!?!? That's the last straw. Damn those Decepticons.
Damn Megatron! And damn... that other Decepticon. And the other one. And that little nasty one! If I hadn't played with Transformers a bit as a kid, I wouldn't have even remembered any of the names of the miscellaneous Decepticons, but even remembering their names is pointless, because few of them have any noticeable characteristics or individual personalities. The Autobots aren't much better, though it's made clearer which GMC automobiles they're affiliated with and they're given repeated names. When Optimus Prime introduces them, he also explains their individual roles within the Autobot army -- munitions, medic, etc -- and then none of them perform any of those specialized roles within the movie. That's annoying. Despite the Autobots each having jobs and voices, one of them died and I both didn't feel a thing at the time and then didn't remember his death when it was mentioned later. Again, zero impact.
[...]
Yes, the Transformers are a marvel to behold as realized by the various different effects houses. But when I played with Transformers, there was a connection between form and function -- different Autobots and Decepticons took different finite forms and the form they took impacted the powers they were able to utilize. In Michael Bay's "Transformers," the robots are much more malleable and the ones that don't transform into airplanes and helicopters seem perfectly capable of coming darned close to flying, etc. Also, with the original Transformers toys, it was always cool that that fighting robot fit perfectly into that sporty car, with no extra pieces and no additional size. In the movie, I didn't believe that Bumblebee had once been the size of a Camaro. He suddenly become vastly larger and more complicated when he went from car to fighting robot. That annoyed me.
I was also irked by how shiny the Transformers were, even at night when there were no light sources to create that reflection. They also seemed a bit weightless, like I never got a sense of how loud they were or how strong. They were able to wander around chatting on Shia TheBeef's lawn and not only did it take a while before they messed with the grass, but at no point did Shia TheBeef's parents hear them. That also annoyed me.
Perhaps the biggest way that the movie could have been fixed for me is if the humans had had any active agency in bringing about the climax of the plot.
[I'm going into spoilers here for the last act, so stop reading please if you haven't seen the movie or figure to see it some day.]
Our plucky and resourceful humans do, indeed, help bring about the end of the movie, but not through any learned behavior or particularly admirable skills or discoveries. At no point do the humans learn the weaknesses of the Decepticons, allowing them to take advantage of said weaknesses for victory. No, at some point Josh Duhamel's character hops on a motorcycle, rides under one and shoots it in the crotch and it goes down. Ummm... OK. I guess that's fine. It was dumb luck, but whatever. And Shia TheBeef brings about the final climax of the movie by jabbing the cube in Megatron's chest, an action that was never even suggested to him as a possibility (Optimus Prime volunteered his own sacrifice, but never explained anything about why it would work to the kid, much less that a similar course of action would work on a different Transformer... Again, dumb luck). And nearly 1/3rd of the movie's plot was built around Rachael Taylor and Anthony Anderson's techno-savvy characters, but descript their centrality to the narrative, they play no purpose in the plot. The characters meander around for a while, allow for exposition and then call in an air strike which, from what I recall, didn't lead to the demise of a single Decepticon. Then, in minimal aftermath to the excitement, those characters don't even appear. They just vanished. That's bad writing and a waste of time. Why couldn't those characters have been there for a reason?
[Spoilers done.]

that fucking anthony anderson thing riled me to no end when i got to the end of the movie and....well you know.
Also, what's up with calling older black women bitches for laughs? Once in a movie...ok whatever but when almost the same exact not funny joke is done twice, and all it involves is yelling at an older black woman "yah old bitch!" or whatever the exact quote is, it's a bit weird. Especially when your target audience is so largely 12 year old boys.

Salute of the Jugger - Better than I remembered. Post apocolyptic violent "sport" nonsense. Good fun. Ends a bit abruptly. I love movies like this, there's something cheesy about them, but they're just so easy to watch. A-
Deja Vu - I wasn't expecting much from this movie but it was pretty watchable as it turned out. At least they explained why it wasn't sattelites/heat signatures. That would have fucking bugged me as much as "computer, hypothesise what's on the other side" in enemy of the state. C+
Heavenly Creatures - Erm this was alright, a kooky weird movie that certainly has it's charms, but the folk over at Empire definitely built it up too much. C+
The Number 23 - I liked this, I didn't have any expectations for it and I didn't know too much about it. Thought Carrey was pretty good in it, liked the dreamy sequences. B+

I have no idea :/ it only just started in the uk on sunday night, first episode. Someone had already told me about it though so i just downloaded all the avis. It's really good.
I loved the nod to american psycho (when he got a hold of the sedative under the pseudonym Patrick Bateman) ... I can tell I'm going to wish there were some more episodes to watch soon!

dexter apparently starts up again late september
i watched transformers last weekend, as mentioned in some other thread, i was drunk at the time. I also never really watched the cartoons often when i was younger, so I had little to no expectations for it. I thought it was brainless fun, had some funny bits in it as well.
I just finished watching 1408. I was expecting to really like it.. erm.. It was pretty decent, but it didn't blow me away. At one point just after the hour mark my interest was really taking a dive, but it picked up a bit, albeit in a kinda predictable way. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to folk.

Oh yeah, i also watched that evan almighty last night, it's a very feel good family movie as it goes on, my nephews probably would have liked it. There were very few (if any) funny bits in it though, and I seem to remember bruce almighty had a good few laughs in it. Not really that watchable. The funniest bit was the credits. But it's hard not to smile when morgan freeman laughs.

just rented the first Poltergeist film this past weekend. I forgot it was a pg movie; i watched this when it came out and it scared the shit out of me, especially the part where the tree grabs the little boy through his window. I was about the same age as the little girl in the movie, way too young to be watching that scary shit. Of course, a few years later I was subscribing to fangoria...
anyway, it was a little cheesy, but surprisingly still entertaining.
Watched Zodiac after that, which was decent, but not as good as other david fincher movies. I'd give it a B.

LAME HOUR AND A HALF
<img src = "http://forums.netphoria.org/images/rating/rating_2.gif">
Rush Hour 3 is pretty dangblasted meaningless. Its really about nothing, does nothing, contributes nothing, and barely entertains you. I guess we’re supposed to watch it and feel good that comedic actor Chris Tucker, former kung-fu gymnast/actor Jackie Chan, and Director Brett Ratner’s multi-million dollar cheques cleared. Uhm, yay? Ratner’s fairly workmanlike direction manages to deliver one or two cool action beats. And Tucker tries so hard to wring laughs from the audience you can practically see the flop sweat forming on his brow at every syllable. Unfortunately, the movie, as a whole, never rises above the level of mildly amusing / mostly lame. You may laugh, may enjoy an action sequence, and the film will completely filter out of your brain minutes after watching. However, there is one thing that Rush Hour 3 truly is - half-assed.
When there is an assassination attempt on a Chinese Ambassador (played Tzi Ma aka CHENG!! from “24”, the jerky jerk who beat up Jack Bauer for about 3 seasons straight) his bodyguard goes to hunt down the assassin. The bodyguard in question is Lee (Jackie Chan) and he inevitably runs into his old partner from the pervious Rush Hour movies, James Carter (Chris Tucker). They end up jumping on a plane to France because some nameless hired goon speaks French. (It’s a pretty dumb reason to get them across the pond and the film makes no apologies for it.) So they end up in the city of lights and many bad jokes and some fairly rote action sequences follow.
Whilst in France, the duo are attacked by many a hoodlum, even including a mysterious Asian female assassin. This character is a carbon copy of the mysterious Asian female assassin from Rush Hour 2. However, the pervious character worked a lot better because Zhang Ziyi, who only spoke two words of English, and made her character actually deadly and menacing. The mysterious Asian female assassin in Rush Hour 3 feels like a pale imitation of what made Ziyi so cool. Oh, and the august Max Von Sidow pops up as some upper-crust muckity-muck who is involved in all the conspiracy stuff somehow. Ever seen Minority Report, where Sidow played an upper-crust muckity-muck who is involved with all the conspiracy stuff somehow? If you haven’t seen it, go rent it. If you have, then you’ll be able to figure out what Sidow is doing in Rush Hour 3 in about 2 seconds. Maybe less. That’s not a spoiler, by the way. Its just common sense considering how uninspired and unoriginal Rush Hour 3 is.
The screenwriter is Jeff Nathanson, who penned the previous installment, but also wrote the awesome-as-hell Spielberg/DiCaprio/Hanks opus Catch Me If You Can. There’s much wit and cool plot twists in Catch, so one wonders how Nathanson has his name attached Rush Hour 3’s uninspired and paint-by-numbers antics. Good God, there’s a “Who’s On First” routine in this movie. Who’s-On-Freakin-First! Isn’t there an expiry date that bit by now?
Neither of the two main actors have had much successful mainstream work since the last Rush Hour installment. Chan has busied himself with way too many lame family-friendly action/comedies like The Tuxedo and Around The World In 80 Days. His antics this time seem too worn to be amusing. You know that move whenever Chan dodges something and he always whips his head back and forth with a mock-astonished look on his face? He does that about 900 times in this movie. Also, remember how cool it was when Jackie Chan was 1st introduced to North America with Rumble In the Bronx, with all the ads promoting how Chan does all of his own stunts? Chan doesn’t do that anymore. He now uses stuntmen and some pretty transparent CGI doubles. Some stunts are still him, but he’s not as crazy as it used to be. I realize Chan is in his 50s now, but if he can’t pull of the act that made him famous, its time to try something different.
Chris Tucker steadfastly refuses to do anything different, considering how for almost a decade he’s only made three movies and they’ve all been named Rush Hour. He’s crafty, demanding 20 million dollars a Rush Hour outing, but his lack of work has pretty much played havoc with his ability to be funny. Most of his jokes bomb, and he mugs so hard and screams so loud that you tune him out. Tucker has a few decent gags, his making a French cab driver sing The Star Spangled Banner at gunpoint is funnily insane, but there’s long spells in-between the chuckles which makes his act, well, kinda sad. At least for 20 million dollars, he manages to get a song-and-dance sequence in.
Ratner’s direction is nothing to admire, which is a shame because he has a few good outings with Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand, and the “Prison Break” pilot episode. His flicks are somewhat pretty and generally move quickly (this one, thankfully, comes in at a trim hour and a half). But film feels so rote and uncaring that Ratner lives up the “hack” label he’s slandered with on the Internets. There’s entertainment value buried in Rush Hour 3, but its only worth viewing if you happen to stumble across it on TV for free in a few years. Even then, only watch Rush Hour 3 in between the commercial breaks of some other show.
