I'm waiting for either Rachel Getting Married to be released in a theater around where I live, or Quantum of Solace to come out, whichever happens first. Until then I've decided I'm too busy with college shit to add to my movie repetoire.

Battle In Seattle - B
pretty good; pretty dramatic, too. When Woody Harrelson sees that kid in the crowd and gets all weepy, I was all *sob*
Good Time Max - B-
Less-than-78-minute movie directed by and starring James Franco. He was awesome in it, but the movie overall was just ok.
The Sweetest Thing - B-
After two dramatic movies, I felt I needed a movie a bit on the lighter side. Someone told me this was a "chick flick" but that I'd like it. Pretty lame in concept and all but there were some genuinely hilarious parts. The "glory hole" scene was priceless.
Frailty - B-
Hadn't seen this since it came out in theaters 7 years ago. Still pretty creepy and holds up well.
Tropic Thunder - B-
Pretty funny; Robert Downey, Jr was the funniest in this. I usually don't like him but he was awesome in this.
The Weather Underground - B-
Interesting, I guess.
White Oleander - C+
Decent enough but seemed to drag on a little bit after the middle of the movie.
The Princess Bride - C+
LOL the Wonder Years kid. I guess this was a cute little movie. I have no nostalgia attached to it because I don't remember ever seeing it when I was younger, but it was entertaining in a really innocent humor way.

The King Of Kong- A
A fun movie, really. Who knew nerds could be sleazy douchebags? I'm sure some liberties were taken with Mitchell's character portrayal once it became clear to them that he was a douche but, really, with the characteristics of Wiebe's personality being so likable, it was hard not to see Mitchell as a villain. The old lady that was profiled was awesome. I just read on the wikipedia article that she died in a car accident a couple years back. She was so happy when she got that Qbert machine.

The King Of Kong- A
so awesome.
some of the movies i've watched over the last couple of weeks...
Jack the ripper (michael caine) - dragged a bit but something kept me watching C+
Indy 4 - this partly gets points for nostalgia, in that it was nice to see indy again, but it wasn't a real indy film, and there were a few things that bugged me about it. B.-
Videodrome - Crazy stuff, I had never seen this before, but I had seen existenz, and there are a few parallels with it. I need to watch this again though. B+
cleaner - Sam L was good but this got pretty predictable as it went on. B- ... almost C+
Pineapple express - felt the same way about this I did about knocked up, a handful of laughs but way over rated. C.
Mutant chronicles... this leaked online a while ago, and I immediately wrote it off as shit. Empire gave it three stars though, and I trust them, so i went ahead and watched it. I mean, i suppose that what they've done is kinda impressive for a reported £1m budget, but this just really grated on me. The 'mutants' were poorly designed, the cgi blood was bad, the plot was non existant, malkovich was in it for all of about 3 minutes and for some reason ron perlman decided to try out an irish accent, and just ended up all over the place. I have to give it points for trying though, and a couple of the set pieces really did work. C-

I can't really grade synecdoche as i cant really explain how that movie made me feel. considering eternal sunshine and adaptation are my two favorite films, and if i had to be objective i'd put synecdoche above adaptation but below ESOTPM. but no film ever punched me in the gut quite like synecdoche. i read reviews before watching it and the only criticism seemed to be in how convulted the film was, but i didn't find it convulted at all because its message was so clear and universal (that sermon by the priest toward the end made me feel like such shit). i wish people wouldn't focus on kaufman's "quirk" as if its some kind of gimmick, but the whole play within a play wasn't just for show, it was to illustrate a really meaningful point. i guess i'm just really impressionable to this kind of stuff i dont think ive ever felt like i could relate to any character in any movie as much as i did with PSH's character. jon brion's score is of course amazing and accentuated so many of the movie's punch-in-the-gut moments. but yeah i love this film a lot. A+ if i had to grade it.
I went and watched adaptation (for the first time) after reading this. I know exactly what you mean when you say these movies have an effect. I watched ESOTSM one night I think 3 times in a row. I've never done that with any movie. I think who plays the characters make a lot of difference for me. As for adaptation, I know I'll have to watch it more than once, but what a movie. This one is going to be on my mind for a minute. A++
Mainly because of right toward the end, she turns and says "I love you too you know...", and cage smiles this big goofy bright smile that sends the movie out right. And if you think about it, when he was in the bar with that film guy he told him you can have a shit script but a good ending, well that was pretty much it.

Aftermath: Genesis (1998) - C+

Anguish (1986) - D+

I wasn't defending that movie... it's just a question that was raised by your post, regarding movies in general.
I do know about the organized violence in football, just the other day two people were killed in my city because of football.
And I do agree that the way they portray that in Green Street Hooligans is indeed unrealistic.

Watched a few today so thought I'd write something.
Sunshine - Hmm, starts off nice, your general sci-fi in space isolated feel. Then seems to go all event horizon and goes somewhat overboard as the film comes to a pretty quick and messy ending. For some reason I thought this film was going to be more detached and isolated, more analysing of the environment and psychology, perhaps more akin to Solaris. Anyway, I guess a 3.5 for this.
Yojimbo - Well this was great, though I thought the protaganist almost too much of a rebel without a cause. Maybe that was a part of the total masterwork of storytelling Akira put forward here, hinting the wanderer to be the more experienced of moral judgement then the practically lawless folk. I don't think the film wanted to get too philosophical, surely it had no need, it was certainly akin to the westerns of old and a great action film with a slightly moral satirical edge. I'd say a 4.5 for this.
Batman Begins - Finally watched this again, been around 2 years since I've seen this fully and I think the third time now. This really is a gem, make no mistake. Tim Burtons original is still my favourite, but this is just as good, probably better as a solidly built film. Infact I would go so far to say that this film is one of the most detailed and well made films from start to finish of this decade. Dark Knight just couldn't live up to this, it got a lot of fanboy love sure but the fact is it was a tad messy and started to move into territory that Batman just doesn't need to go. Anyway, this and Blade are the best Comic films of the last 10 years imo. I found it quite interesting they were both written by David Goyer also. Certainly a 5, complete classic for the genre.

Stephen Mangan (Green Wing) plays Keith, a recovering alcoholic, and Kate Ashfield (Shaun Of The Dead) plays his wife. The show is very funny in parts, but also a little boring in other parts. It's really weirdly interesting, a fiercely competitive and long-standing subculture of old video games, and it's never been documented very well. You really feel for Steve Wiebe but he at least gets vindicated in the end.
Something in this kind of resonated with my situation, having devoted a ridiculous portion of my life to the game Worms to become the best or one of the few best all-round players, and yet I know hardly anyone will ever know or care about the community. From an outsider standpoint it seems kind of thankless and hopeless, which is the feeling I got when watching Steve, it felt like looking at myself.

Sean Penn was really good (though I found his hair a bit distracting) and it sure was nice of Tim Robbins to give Susan Sarandon some Oscar-bait. I haven't seen her in much but she always seems to overact either a tiny bit or a ton whenever I have seen her in something. She made me roll my eyes a few times during this and made the film sort of grating to watch at points. I don't know, she just irks me.
Tadpole - D+
It's not that this movie is bad but between the shaky camerawork, hitting you over the head with points that should be more subtle and making it seem like this somewhat pretentious teenage turd is going to have forty year-old women wanting him is just a bit too out of the realm of believability to me. Wow! He speaks French! Let me take my pants off right now! He's only fifteen but he's always wearing a sweater and sounding smart!

Any Given Sunday C
I mean I guess it's a C since I enjoyed it because I kind of felt some of the team dynamics were believable and Dennis Quaid is really pretty great in it. Though there were parts of it that were like most Oliver Stone movies: too much. And the uniforms of the other teams looked like they were designed by someone who was colorblind. This kind of thing seriously pisses me off since I can create colorful, nicer looking jerseys on Madden but they're putting together sea green, light blue and yellow for the opposing team. Really? What the fuck? And the Dallas Knights jerseys are just awful, yeah it might look cool to have a Knights Templar crest covering the full chest of the jersey but following that up with sunburst yellow for the rest of the jersey and helmet (without a logo) is just a bad idea.
Oh yeah and there's some powerful misogyny at work in this movie. Every single woman in it is a total inexplicable bitch, especially Lauren Holly as Quaid's wife.

The Stepford Wives - Should have been creepier than it was, starts off good and then moves entirely too quickly to the end. Also one of the great things about the end is that the explanation and the demonstration of the conspiracy are entirely different. I read this movie had production problems but this is pretty unforgivable. It literally happens in the same scene like they weren't paying attention. This would have been better if it wasn't treated like a comedy for the first half, even if the interplay between Bette Middler, Kidman, and the gay guy is pretty amusing. This plot should be full of gender satire but is toothless. Especially because of tacked-on, awkward Hollywood ending that differs entirely from the ugliness of the novel. I'm sure the director of American Psycho could have made this a lot better. C-

Batman, Mask of the Phantasm: C
i was always a fan of the batman animated series growing up and this movie was right up my ally. just under 77 minutes it doesn't drag on too long and ever scene has something to say. mark hamill as joker is always a pleasure.
I was never able to sit through the whole thing, and I couldn't tell you why. It's not that I didn't like it, because up until I turned it off, it was pretty enjoyable. But it made me extremely depressed for God knows what reason. And to this day, I still haven't gotten all the way through it. Weird.

i left after 45 minutes. i hardly ever go to the movies anymore, unless i feel the movie would be better on a big screen (cloverfield, dark night, etc.) so I was pissed that i wasted the time. but i did get a free movie ticket.
i really really liked the original but this was just big blockbuster b.s. and totally missed the subtlety of the original.

People are already buzzing that it could win Best Picture.
And small children don't know good if it hit them on the head in the first place. Sit through any random hour of Disney Channel original programming and this will be verified. I'm sure the other two weren't satisfied since not enough things exploded and there weren't gorgeous women showing cleavage.

Bad Santa - I think most of you know by now that I have a tremendously wicked sense of humor so it should come as no surprise that I absolutely love this movie. It is so unflinchingly mean-spirited and ugly. It's main character is so thoroughly awful that it's kind of hard to love him, but you surround him with a dwarf with an unbelievable potty mouth and a penchant for unwarranted verbal abuse and a completely self-infatuated Bernie Mac; then put said horrible drunk Willie with a lonely, adorable little fat kid and he instantly becomes someone that has at least some kind of redeemable value. The part where he destroys Thurman's precious advent calendar simply because he's an evil old drunk is not only the low point for Willie but one of the funnier parts in the film, especially when Willie feels bad about it later on and re assembles it putting tic tacs and asprin in the little panels instead of chocolate. Finding out the name of the little fat kid after living with him for 2/3rds of the movie is also a nice touch. "Thurman Merman? That's your fucking name?" Also, I don't think I've seen a funnier sex scene than Lauren Graham saying "Fuck me Santa!" over and over again. B+

Virgin Suicides - B. It was pretty awesome, I liked the whole pastel-ish feel of the movie. Coppola did a really good job of establishing a unique atmosphere. Not as good as Lost in Translation. Kristen Dunst was a big negative.
I don't think anyone could have played Lux better. I generally don't like her acting though, it's so dry.
I will one of these days. I'm a little turned off because of all the quoting, and i know what happens at the end, and i think i might really dislike ed norton. made worse because i used to work with a guy that thought he was the biggest badass and was all like fuck yeah ed norton all the time.

12-25-2008, 08:26 AM
I haven't seen 300 yet, either. I was talking to the owner of a comics shop near my hotel a few days ago, and he was ranting and raving about the movie, visually. He thought it was a pretty faithful adaptation of Miller's storyline and left out just the right moments that would have been awkward for a movie audience. But supposedly there were times during the slow-mo that you could pause the movie and hold the book next to the screen, and the two will look identical. Apparently Snyder likes to do this sort of thing for the fanboys, because I hear you'll be able to hold the book up to Watchmen, as well.
I told the guy I'd download it and get back to him. Iron Man, too, since it's supposed to be something great.

silent night, deadly night - C+
A funny bad slasher movie, seeing a guy dressed as Santa commiting murders on christmas night is very funny. best kill: sled guy's head taking a leave off his body, then neatly rolling next to it's dead counterpart.
silent night, deadly night 2 - Z
This movie is bad in so many ways... half of it is just footage from the first film, both from flashbacks and a movie theater scene where the characters watch the first film, which makes zero sense. The other half is even more inapt than the first one, terrible acting, terrible everything, stay away from this piece of crap. best kill: a guy getting impaled by an umbrella, which opens halfway through his meat.
