the first half of Cloverfield is an A possibly at a stretch. The second hlaf of the film lapsed into stupid predictability and in the end I couldn't care less about the characters.

Also Downfall is amazing, but I would say that.

No country for old men is a B- and very overrated

There will be blood - A+, I loved everything about it.

I am legend - B- now that I think about it...Omega Man was better.

and City of God is still the best movie in a very long time

Nimrod's Son
04-22-2008, 07:04 PM
Michael Clayton - C, incredibly overrated, pretend "twists and turns" but no actual ones, and a predictable ending
Juno - C-, incredibly overrated, unrealistic attempt for every character to be "hip" as if screenwriter watched Napoleon Dynamite 50 times and decided how characters talk is more important than plot of what they have to say

Notes on a scandal

Pretty good. That old chick is creepy as fuck. You end up feeling pretty sad for Cate Blanchett at the end. For whatever reason, she couldn't end the affair, and got royally screwed by that old hag.

good movie and great writing. nobody does emotional cruelty like patrick "closer" marber.

"Her fetish for the boy was simply her snobbery manifested. He’s working class and he likes art, as if he were a monkey who strolled in from the forest and asked for a gin and tonic."

I liked Juno overall. The character twist was touching. but the constant "hip" slang was irritating. I don't recall any hipster crap in Napoleon Dynamite, in fact the only similarity I saw is that they're both put out by Fox Searchlight and Juno stole ND's "liger" font for its opening credits.

Michael Clayton - C-, overrated garbage
I Am Legend - C, awful effects on the zombies, didn't do anything 28 days/weeks didn't do, and yes i know it's from older source material.
Glengarry Glen Ross - B+, pretty awesome even though i was falling asleep. incredible performances.
Conspiracy - C, pretty standard stuff with a few chilling moments
Downfall - A-, ridiculously good but a tad too long, also Hitler's suicide should have been on camera even though no one knows how it went down, just make something up, i want to see that shit.
2001 - I made a thread about this and don't feel qualified to grade it. I was with it until the last half hour and it went to shit.
Sweeney Todd - B, not as good as I would have though but pretty cool. Helena Bonham Carter is so hot.
Assassination of Jesse James - B-, i was having trouble following the plot. slow as fuck but interesting, zooey deschanel's part was too small.
City of God - A, incredible
No Country for Old Men - D+, awful overrated garbage

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three - A-
Really good. Pretty straight forward but by no means a dumb action movie. Walter Mathau and Robert Shaw were great, though a couple of the sort of stereotypical loud, angry, cursing New Yorkers bugged the hell out of me so needless to say I was happy when one of did not make ant appearances past the first half of the movie. I loved how it ended. Not just how but when it ended, they did not drag it out too long and it seemed like it ended right when it should have.

Penelope - B
I'm not sure what movie I thought this was when I downloaded it, but this was not the one I had in mind. I watched it anyway because it has Catherine O'Hara in it and it wasn't that bad. Some parts are a bit over the top but they are few and far between considering how cheesy it could have been. Not the kind of movie I usually watch but I still liked it anyway.

I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler but the plot was sort of weak. Not even close to how good a movie with those two in it could be. There were some very funny parts but they were just few and far between and most of that wasn't really the writing, just the two of them playing off of each other. By the end the romantic subplot and the lack of any sort of depth in any character just made me wish it would end sooner.

I think 28 Days was great for the first 2/3, but the last act just really brought the whole thing down for me. Walk Hard - C+, better than I was expecting. some genuine laugh-out-loud moments, like when he's having sex with some random girl and says "goddamn, this is a dark fucking period!" and also how he looks exactly the same from ages 14 through 80. Jenna Fischer says she wants a penis in her vagina.
Juno - B+, I dunno, I was expecting all the hype to be for nothing, but aside from some ridiculous try-too-hard dialogue, I couldn't find much wrong with it. Bateman and Garner were really awesome. I thought it was great how when you first meet them Bateman seems like the cool half of the couple and she seems a little uptight, and then little by little you begin to see he's a creep. solid movie.

Not every waving flag needs a breeze -- at least not in space. When astronauts were planting the flagpole they rotated it back and forth to better penetrate the lunar soil (anyone who's set a blunt tent-post will know how this works). So of course the flag waved! Unfurling a piece of rolled-up cloth with stored angular momentum will naturally result in waves and ripples -- no breeze required!

that said, i like reading about conspiracies, even if they are wacky.

Completely faithful to the book. Only prob I had was that Mira Sorvino isn't really a very good actress.

Once: C-

Cringe inducingly awful at times and ok at others. Hansard didn't do too badly but overall flimsy and patchy.

The Seventh Continent: B

Intensity in ten cities as you would expect from Haneke. Wonderfully controlled and glacial meditation on disintigration. Really depressing how the structured self destruction mirrors the stilted family regime throughout the film.

It just seems so, I dunno, hollywood-y or something...all these dramatic staredowns and awful music.
It also seemed like the actors had never read the book, only glanced at it as they were making the movie. Ew, and Daisy was the worst character.

Hard Eight (1996)
Paul Thomas Anderson
An interesting start to an amazing career. Low key, low budget, simple, but effective, rounded characters, with a driving force to move the plot forward (in this case the mysterious protagonist). I enjoyed the claustrophobic close ups, Baker Hall's aged eyes staring right into the camera, the subdued score, the pure scumbagedness of Samuel L. Jackson. Gwenyth Paltrow was actually a highlight this time as well, this kind of manic-depressive, self-destructive, cute and innocent chain smoking flirty hooker waitress. Film makes me want a cigarette.

Octane (Pulse) - C-

Started out really awesome and creepy; it was excellent mood-setting, really eerie and creepy. It reminded me of the feeling I got watching An American Haunting, not that the movies are in any way identical - I just mean in the way it was able to be "chilling" without trying to hard.
Well, this lasted about an hour, then it turned into an absurd david lynch-aping mess. I really wish it would have been good the whole way through. :(

lots of solid performances but i could tell this was PTA's first movie. felt it was lacking just a bit, he's really refined his directing from then to now. reilly and paltrow were good together, paltrow is ridiculously adorable. doesnt come close to punch drunk love and there will be blood, but solid nonetheless.

Visually, it is pretty nice to look at but it probably went down an entire letter grade towards the final part when it sort of descended into what seems like another kind of movie all together. I do not want to ruin the movie for those who have not seen it but once the "unknown" member of the crew gets on, it seemed to just ruin whatever the movie had going for it. Still probably worth a rental for the visuals but it was really annoying how it ended, at least for me.

Gangs of New York- C
Daniel Day Lewis is good at being really, really creepy while sporting some heinous and ridiculous facial hair but his performance wasn't enough to make this movie for me. It seemed overly long and after the two hour mark I wasn't all that interested in it anymore. Maybe I will give it another chance when it's not two in the morning but I don't think I am going to like it much more than I did.

D., how do you give Fracture a B+ and Michael Clayton a B??? Fracture was a giant disappointment.

Iron Man - B-? i just can never really get into superhero movies. but the dark knight trailer got me pretty excited, i have to say.

I dunno, I guess I just found Michael Clayton to be kind of a jumbled mess in some parts, but Fracture was pretty awesome - why the dissapointment?

it was alright, I guess. mostly it was cool.

Made of Honor - D
meh. first showing at the drive-in; totally predictable romantic comedy

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - C-/D+
what the hell? didn't everyone say this was as good as superbad and knocked up, etc? this movie was really, really bad. really funny some times but overall so unfunny and dramatic.

Fracture was so lame and anticlimactic. I thought Anthony Hopkins was going to psychologically destroy Gosling based on the trailers. and i dunno. it's didn't happen. and the entire second half was just lame.

Michael Clayton on the other hand, was awesome.

Decent movie. Not as funny as I'd hoped it would be, but had its share of LOLOL moments.

I still can't believe people were saying Sarah Marshall was funnier than the other Apatow movies.

Even not compared to the other ones, it was unmemorable.

Cool World- C+, mainly because it has one of the hottest animated chicks ever. But yeah the plot was really sketchy and bizarrely incomplete. And 2D animation with 3D actors is so retro and ridiculous, I found it kind of entertaining.
