Implosion 06-06-2007, 12:55 AM Is Le Deux Machina so cheesy that it doesn't qualify as a song? Otherwise, it surely belongs on the list.
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 12:56 AM You haven't even heard the studio version of For God and Country, you dick.
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 12:59 AM I appreciate In my body, regardless of what others think. Something about it. The remix on the other hand is terrible. I think it could have been really pleasing, had it made it into the studio. Same goes for most of Machina II.

it's not really fair to even consider that track or the alt version of heavy metal machine.

hummer26 06-06-2007, 01:05 AM The entire adore album
songs off the tonight tonight single from the box set
pretty much anything from adone onwards.....few good songs on machina and a few good ones with lots of potential from arising tour........seems like corgan purposely avoided putting the good music on albums?
For God and Country, concert version blows...might be diff on cd
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 01:06 AM what i have heard makes me want to :hurl:
Well, apparently the Album version is completely different then the live version. The live version is just a barebones take on it.
So FFS, why don't you reserve your judgement?
Zorgon 06-06-2007, 01:08 AM songs off the tonight tonight single from the box set

lol @ this guy with his Adore bashing.
Adore may not rawk hard, and it isn't for everyone but I implore you to lie down by a fire on a crisp winter's eve, and absorb the album as you drift to sleep. You will change your mind. Adore is Billy's song writing at its best.
Poetry
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 01:12 AM Hummer26 is obviously more into the heavy spectrum of SP.
let me guess, Everlasting Gays is your favorite song on Machina? Ava Adore off of Adore?
To each his own.
hcueva 06-06-2007, 01:12 AM Not in a particular order:
1. Apples and Oranges (ripped off Syd's song title and changed the spelling, btw)
2. 17 seconds -it wins the failed experiment award.
3. Untitled
4. Take me down
5. About half of Machina/Machina II
Gossamer 06-06-2007, 01:14 AM I think you should keep this to like just the main albums, Gish, SD, MCIS, Adore, and Machina...because there is A LOT of crap to sift through if you add everything else.
The 5 weakest for me would probably be:
1. Crestfallen (by far the worst song they've ever done imo)
2. Appels + Oranjes (never really liked this one, also sounds really dated)
3. Blue Skies Bring Tears (more like this song bores me to tears)
4. Daydream (billy's acoustic version at the secret show redeems it a bit)
5. Take Me Down (worst song on MCIS)
Ol' Couch Ass 06-06-2007, 01:14 AM The best thing about this thread is how original it is. I don't think we've ever had a Pumpkins worst of list! Congrats for breaking the mold! Awesome thread!
let's try to keep personal opinions out of this or we're not going to get much done here.

10. Once In a While

10. Once In a While
Always thought Once In A While was one of the stronger tracks from that era. I did just listen to The Imploding Voice. That song will always blow.
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 01:20 AM How can you say that about untitled? I just don't get how you can like Muzzle or home, but diss Untitled? Its a great song, although the live version sounds a little rushed on the vocals.
Ya know, I would add Transformer to the list just because it just doesn't have that punch that most Pumpkins songs have. I like the song, its catchy and it has a nice feel but its just dead. The name is misleading.
christian zombie vampires 06-06-2007, 01:20 AM 03. Here's to the Atom Bomb (Judas O version)
wow i actually think this is one of the only good tracks from the machina era
cork_soaker 06-06-2007, 01:21 AM oh, opinions *limp wrist flick*
DisconnectD 06-06-2007, 01:22 AM My Mistake is fucking excellent. The vocals and emotions are as raw as it gets for such a mellow song. It was recorded after the bulls playoff right? Something about the vocals get me off everytime. I'm not gay or anything but man those vocals kickass. (as do unicorns)
redbreegull 06-06-2007, 01:23 AM Jesus fucking Christ, I've never seen so many good songs on "worst of" lists.
Desolation_Disco_King 06-06-2007, 01:23 AM Sorry
but this is why a lot of you have no idea what you are talking about
and how a lot of you are just talking out of your ass.
Not 1 single person even mentioned Chewing Gum
i see songs on here like...TCTOM and Perfect and The Everlasting Gaze
This Time....and the entire adore album.
Yeah....all of those songs are worse than Chewing Gum
a basic accoustic song where he mostly just says Chewing Gum over and over
"got myself a piece of chewing gum.....chewing gum, got myself a piece of chewing gum"
choosing ANY of these songs over that song, is retarded
and like i said
proves that most of you are talkin out of your ass
and you don't know SHIT about music...or even the pumpkins
go to some other msg board
with that said, i still don't mind chewing gum..just a simple fun song
but it is 100% the worst song they've (billy) has done

By that same logic we should all be condeming "Where's Vince?", and I love that song. Don't get me wrong, I see what you're saying, but I would listen to "Chewing Gum" all day before volunteering to listen to "Appels + Oranjes".

redbreegull 06-06-2007, 01:28 AM Seriously, I have to post again just to reiterate here, you guys have the WORST taste ever. Someone said Crestfallen was the worst SP song. And someone said MII Saturnine. Holy fuck. Are you all high?

Tonite Reprise
"Originally slated to go on towards the end of the Mellon Collie album, this one was hacked off in the name of 'When is enough too much?' I had just come back from the Chicago Bulls' tragic loss to the Orlando Magic in the playoffs, and was very depressed. My voice was hoarse from so much shouting. Flood threw up his famous mikes, and I just did it live. I used my trusty Gibson acoustic, with the rusty strings." -BC (Guitar World 1/97)

everlasting gaze was ruined by that 10 second rant....and AVA adore is not heavy.....it is Nine Inch Nails bullshit....period.
Adore has great lyrics and I listened to it in high school when it came out. It sucks....music is about instruments and poetry coming together. You cannot just have great lyrics and expect to make good music by coupling it with bizare nine inch nails "sounds" you people are idiots.....if you were fans of sp in 91 to 96 ish you would cringe after hearing adore. Making adore under the name zwan would have been fine....but it was not cool to do under the sp name.

yeah, billy is an idiot for trying different kinds of music
and not doing the same thing over and over
what an idiot that guy is
i mean, if i was in a band
i'd just keep doing the same sound all the time
i mean look at AC/DC, they are an awesome band
but what i love most about that band, on top of all the songs they have in their catalogue is the fact that 80% of them all sound the same
if billy isn't gonna keep doing the same style of music over and over
i don't even want to be associated with this band as a fan.

the sellout 06-06-2007, 08:57 AM 1) Le Deux Machina - let's pretend to have an appreciation for artsy classical, then fuck it up severly!
2) Because You Are - just no
3) Heavy Metal Machine (either version) - See Aboev
4) Annie Dog - If he didnt have a shit headcold in it and sound even worse then usual, it might have been okay
5) The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete - Sounds like a kid's song..... about drugs
6) Farewell and Goodnight - The pumpkins try to be cute (aww)
7) Beautiful (the last bit is okay, but you have to listen to most of the song to get to it)
8) Take Me Down - Throughout all of the pumpkins, James sings only two good songs. This isnt one of them (for reference: Blew away and Go)
9) Whir - don't udnerstand the appeal in this one
10) Blue Skies Bring Tears (though the arising version is in my top 10 favourite ones)
SpFission 06-06-2007, 08:58 AM anyone else think "The Bells" is a pretty good song?

you are a FREAKIN IDIOT. By all means make different types of rock music and thats cool....from gish through mcis...sp played a different tone/type of rock music and nobody complained because the songs sounded different but remained GREAT. Do you have to ABONDON A GUITAR...IN ORDER TO MOVE ON AS AN ARTIST? YOUR DEFINING SOUND AS A BAND IS DERIVED FROM GUITARS AND DRUMS.....AND THEN YOU MAKE THAT PIECE OF SHIT ALBUM ADORE....WHICH IN MANY TRACKS YOU WONDER....WHERE ARE THE INSTRUMENtS? GET REAL YOU MORON.......AFTER LISTENING TO ROCK MUSIC FOR 15 YEARS I HAVE NEVER SEEN A BAND GO FROM ONE TYPE OF MUSIC TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TYPE.
THE SONG ANNIE DOG SPEAKS VOLUMES FOR ADORE. GO LISTEN TO AC DC AND SHUT UP. I liked a few songs on machina and machina2.......zeitgeist will be great from what I am hearing but dont tell an old school pumpkins fan that adore is a great album and deserves respect because its different. And as for lyrics....if I want pure poetry I read poetry......albums like sd and mcis had amazing lyrics coupled with amazing guitars and drums...

seign 06-06-2007, 11:37 AM you are a FREAKIN IDIOT.
TEDDY RUXBIN
Speaking as an "old school pumpkin fan", Adore is my second favorite SP album (next to Siamese Dream). Who cares what kind of instrument is being played as long as a song moves you?
Anyway, my least favorite Pumpkins songs have got to be all of James' songs (except "...said sadly"). I just don't like his voice. And ...said sadly was only good because of Nina Gordon. The only Billy songs that I can agree with that have been mentioned already are Chewing Gum and Because You Are.
AndySlash 06-06-2007, 11:47 AM anyone else think "The Bells" is a pretty good song?
I like it.
Someone earlier in the thread (or maybe elsewhere) said the Tonight, Tonight single from the box set was the best EP. I'd say the 33 one is. Every song on there is good. I love that disc.

apetulantfrenzy 06-06-2007, 11:53 AM i will just go with the major albums and official b-side collections. The worst pumpkin songs are clearly some of the undeveloped and poorly produced demos/b-sides over the years that we have only from bootlegs. No Iha songs either.
No order
Tristessa
Spaceboy
Annie dog(I hate when he sings like that... all the live versions are ok)
Try Try Try
In my body
Spaced
Because you are(production makes it unlistenable)
My mistake
Blank
Speed Kills
those are the ones that come to mind for song I really can't stand
Did you just ******* Tristessa? No way. That guitar solo eats your kind for breakfast.
And...Spaced is fun. Such a cool album closer.

There is a band for people like you: Nickelback.
See The Beatles for a rock band that tried different types of music with vastly different instrumentation.
Nice usage of CAPS LOCK, though. The ellipses are lovely as well.

1979 ftw best ep
TheBigG753 06-06-2007, 12:26 PM Yeah, the 1979 EP is the best. Set the Ray, Cherry, The Boy, Ugly...very good stuff. The 33 EP is no slouch, though.

as a rule these songs are bad. I agree.
1) Le Deux Machina - let's pretend to have an appreciation for artsy classical, then fuck it up severly!
10) Blue Skies Bring Tears (though the arising version is in my top 10 favourite ones)
ok for whatever reason alot of people hate Take Me Down, but Beautiful + Farewell&Goodnight !? Two amazing songs.

Here's to the Atom Bomb (Judas O version) and Saturnine (Machina II version) are both great songs in my opinion. I think these versions are both better than the others.
this is every song i don't really like that much:
rhino (slow and boring)
1979 (boring and repetative)
blank
to sheila (boring and repetative)
perfect
todapp
annie dog
everlasting gaze (mostly the rant)
imploding voice (RUINED virex....)
crying tree
because you are
sparrow (boring)
winterlong (boring)
untitled (rushed shite)
tarantula (rushed shite)
some i hate (because you are), some just have bad bits that make it hard to like the full song (rhino, teg)
-not including most of james's stuff, bad versions where good versions exist (try try try, atom bomb), or non songs (17, spaced, le deux etc.)
Gossamer 06-06-2007, 03:00 PM Crestfallen is definitely the worst song off Adore.

Not sure about that. It's a slow one so you dont always appreciate it, but it is a pretty good track. I think the weakest on Adore is either Perfect or Daphne Descends.

Anything off the Gish album
Anything off the Siamese Dream album
Anything off the Mellon Collie album
Anything off the Adore album.
Four masterpieces. Anyone who has a problem with these records can fuck off because they have no conception of what the Smashing Pumpkins are.
Crestfallen is the best song on Adore BTW. Go fuck yourself.

OK I will. I was going to anyways. I'll leave a note that directs people to your post on netphoria. You'll be in trouble for a couple of weeks I guess. If you have kids, they'll probably be taken from you for an indefinite period of time. Let's just hope you'll lose your job too.

Same for many songs on that guy's list. Man... Blue Skies Bring Tears is an awesome song.

Machina 2 is great but Adore is a masterpiece and their 2nd best album.
ordinary apathy 06-06-2007, 09:32 PM I think the weakest on Adore is either Perfect or Daphne Descends.
I'm with you on Perfect. I used to feel that way about Daphne Descends, but the Kerry B remix kind of made me appreciate it more for some reason.
TheBigG753 06-06-2007, 10:47 PM Hmmm, I'm surprised at the dislike for Perfect. It's probably in my top 5 off of Adore. I could never get into Crestfallen, though.
yoshinobu's revenge 06-06-2007, 11:46 PM I did an elimination poll on this aaaages ago.
I think #1 was Le Deux Machina. The Crying Tree of Mercury and 17 were also up there, along with some James songs - The Bells comes to mind.
yoshinobu's revenge 06-06-2007, 11:48 PM oh and also Tales of a Scorched Earth
Nidhogg 06-06-2007, 11:48 PM Why are people listing 17? It's not even really a song.

ordinary apathy 06-07-2007, 12:39 AM I agree I loved the 1979 EP and the pics as well.
Best EP in the box set, IMO. I loved the cover, too. I had a subway size poster of it above my bed during my teenage years.
ordinary apathy 06-07-2007, 12:42 AM I can understand a large percentage of fans not liking CTOM, La Deux Machina, 17, and The Bells. But the fact that Tales of a Scorched Earth topped that poll as well boggles the mind.
