I've been wondering about D4 (and 34, as the other thread suggests) as well. I hope when the Pumpkins start playing in the states that they will start talking to the community again. I don't even care to find out info about now, but maybe they'd deign to tell us more unknown secrets from the olden days.

I'm actually interested to hear his opinion of the new pumpkins, Really. I mean this guy has like everything sp and he spent so much effort to get it. For the guy who has probably the first show through the last and most every other thing inbetween I wonder how the new stuff stacks up in his eyes. I'm not trying to kiss his butt but he's practically an historian.

Instead of trying to be ''elitist pricks'' Why don't you inform those who are less informed? Speaking on behalf of the ''noobs'', they deserve information about their favorite band just as much as you guys. It is kind of out of their control, being born after The Pumpkins Reign, ya know?

So, Who or what is D4/34?

What do I think of the new SP?

Not much.

I didn't like Tarantula the first dozen times I heard it, except for the "chorus". Stylistically, it's a mess. It's growing on me, but I can't tell if I actually like the song or if I've just listened to in enough times that it's familiar now.

I downloaded the Paris show, and I was bored to tears. The only new song I actively liked was Doomsday Clock. Others' were "pleasant", like Bleeding the Orchid, but I felt no real drive to hear them again.

To put it in perspective, I burned the first 2 discs so I could listen to them on the way to work, but couldn't be bothered to burn the 3rd. Out of those 2 discs, I really only liked the Doomsday Clock / Home / Hummer stretch.

Gossamer is a pretty cool riff attached to a bloated 20 minute snorefest.

The white outfits are teh gay.

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/MMPH/263500~The-Osmonds-Posters.jpg

Still, I am looking forward to the album. I hope Roy Thomas Baker was able to keep Billy from crawling up his own ass, production-wise. But somehow I doubt that's going to be the case.

I dig the cover art, though. I'm a big fan of Fairey's stuff.

I presume your affinity for the Pumpkins has vanished with this new incarnation.

You'd assume wrong. I still love the band, even if I have downgraded some of their earlier stuff. Plus, for all I know the album will be chock full of great stuff... live, the Pumpkins are more about brutality and endurance than songcraft. (Except for acoustic shows, which tend to bring out the best in Billy's songwriting.)

I may hose the live show, but I'll buy the album on the day of release and tickets to a show near me as soon as they go on sale.

Billy's built up a lot of goodwill with me (in terms of releasing quality music). It will take a string of shitty albums for me to abandon him as a fan.

Granted, I'm pretty disappointed by the whole idea of SP2, but we'll see what comes of it.

ChrisHill
06-08-2007, 07:46 PM
I agree about the acoustic shows. It was good to hear that the crowd at the Berlin show the other night was respectful and quiet during the songs unlike, say, the crowds at the Double Door shows or the Viper Room show. I think the key is to pick a unique location that doesn't serve alcohol, this way you avoid the cacophony of bottle-clinking that is the Double Door. Hopefully the good response means we may be more likely to see more quasi-spontaneous acoustic shows in the future.

Pmack

May I ask what this means?

It just means I've come to realize there's a lot more crap in their catalog than I had previously acknowledged. I used to be able to listen to any of their albums from start to finish without skipping a track (with one exception-- I always start Adore on track 2. I have always hated To Sheila.) Now I can't listen to anything except Siamese Dream all the way through.

Sometimes it's hearing the song in a different context and realizing the production smothered a decent song (Crying Tree of Mercury... oh, for fuck's sake, Machina in general), and sometimes it's just an acknowledgement that their albums are just too damn long with too much filler. Adore would be so much better as a 40-minute album, for instance.

Edit: I just noticed that finally, after almost eight years here, I finally cast off the "Pledge" label. Woooo! Of course, new posters here dump that label about eleven minutes after registering, so...

OffTopicMan

I've unfortunately realized how much of a crappy guitarist Billy really is. Their live shows lack the passion they once did and that was what made them great. You lose the passion and you're left with subpar singing and musicianship.

I really hope zeitgeist is going to be great....

always interesting to read Dave's post. He is like James Iha, hardly says anything but when he does everyone seems to listen.
