Zeitgeist...
How many of you truthfully knew what this word meant before you heard it was going to be the title of the next Smashing Pumpkins album?
I had never heard the word before, I had no idea what Zeitgeist was or even how to actually pronounce the word...
but now i know what it is and I hope you do to,and if you don't I hope you'll take the time to go find out what it is, it amazes me that billy corgan is one of the only lyricists who ever makes me reach for a dictionary...
but the purpose of this thread isn't to exaine the word Zeitgeist, that would be a waste of time...although no matter what I write I'm sure there will be plenty of people here on Netphoria that will consider this post a waste of time, but this is something that I have been thinking about lately...
why did billy/jimmy/the smashing pumpkins name this album Zeitgeist?
Is it an attempt by Billy to make us aware of what Zeitgest is? does he want us to become conscious of what the spirit of our era/age is? what is the spirit of the times we live in? so what is the zeitgeist of our age/era: hedonism? greed? war? hatred? selfishness? love? freedom? apathy? empathy? Its different for all of us I know, we come from different states, cities, countries, societies, political systems, tribes and races...and at times it even seems some of us may be from other planets...but we are all connected here...conneceted in a way that is unique to this age and time...near instantaneous communication is possible now, linking so many different cultures and socities in a way that was never possible before in the history of the human race...but we still have wars, we still have people killing and dying for God and Country...

I think naming the album Zeitgeist is a blatant attempt by billy to get us to not only examine the age we live in, but to get us to examine how we can and do effect and influence the spirit of our age....
but I think naming the album Zeitgeist also serves another person, I think by making us aware of what Zeitgeist is they are trying to state 'this album is the smashing pumpkins attempt to influence the spirit of this age with our music...'
and to also inspire us to examine the lives we live and how what we do effects others and the world, to inspire us into action...
to inspire us to climb outside the walls we've built around ourselves...

we have the power dodetermine what our generations legacy be?
the human race is capable of so much but it seems hellbent on annihilating itself...
and most people don't care as long as it doesn't effect their lives...
self-important, self-centered, self-absorbed, self-obsessed, self-conscious whores...
is that what we are? is that what we've become?

shit all over this thread if you want...
i really don't care...
actions will always speak much louder than words...

its time for action people....

I didn't think it was possible *not* to know what 'Zeitgeist' means. Even if only having heard the term in the wonderful George Carlin quote "Don't take any shit from the Zeitgeist."

I would be more coherent, but when I look at your post I only see dozens of ellipses. They sort of draw the eye.

No need to be sorry, I was just honestly and truly curious (also drunk).

The sad part is even with approximately 9485 ellipses per post, your internet communication is SO much better than most. Now that's depressing.

As for the original topic, I don't so much think BC was trying to make a political statement about our current Zeitgeist/Weltgeist as I think that he might have been trying to invoke the very concept of Zeitgeist itself. It's a powerful philosophical/anthropological concept, and an important one. Now, that's what I would like to think, but perhaps the ridiculous album cover already belays me. Sigh.

Maybe this is an American thing, but most anyone fluent in a language even remotely
connected to the germanic bransch wouldn't need to learn what zeitgeist means
because it would have read clear as day anyhow. Ok maybe Im exaggerating, but thats basically true.

It's not a "big word".

I mean, if the album was called "time ghost" or "time spirit", would you seriously
have a problem understaning what it means? Would you characterize the word in itself as some grand concept? No.

Flying of the handle upon hearing the word "zeitgeist" is like going dizzy over the word
"freedom" or well, perhaps even "ponies!1".

I admire your your disorder, though.

i think that the concept has more to do with the way the word was origionally used by philosophers then the fact it's germanic.

it means less perhaps to you because you understand what it means in a literal sence, rather then a philosophical one when you see it.

Culture makes all the difference in the world. Besides, from what I gather, Analyzing the theme of the ''Zeitgeist'' as it pertains to the album, is perfectly legitimate in my eyes, and it is like appels and oranjes to ''freedom'' or ponies! The concept is irrevocably deeper and more intimate. You, being European and ''connected to the Germanic bransch'' should realise this. Obviously you were joking when you said that it wasn't a valid point of discussion.

Yes, but that's not what he's doing.. he's dizzy over the fact that such a enigmatic
word as "zeitgeist", the concept of which he has at best a cursory undstanding,
is gracing the album cover, and that that in itself is a "SINE!1!1"

His subsequent rant ala "children holding hands around the world" by UN,
with the required but shallow "grim look of the doomed future",
isn't exactly breaking the ice as far as discussing the philosophical concept
that goes with the term zeitgeist.

His little tirade has nothing to do with the philosophy of zeitgeist,
and everything to do with third grade analysis of the world's problems,
essentially concluding that there's just one or perhaps two factors that
prohibits everyone, who is obviously just the same at heart,
from being able to live in peace and harmony with airborn pink ponies!1!11

For fuck sake, he even said "...but we still have wars".

Im not trying to be mean, and I wouldn't mind discussing zeitgeist,
but this is not happening as far as I can see.

ok. i can see your point.

yet. at the same time, i think even the use of the word, the reintroduction of the word into a society that doesnt understand it will make people think.

Perhaps that was the aim, and it has nothing to do with the music on the cd itself...

Although Billy is an egomaniac - It could just be that he liked the word and thought it would be cool.

I have stockholm syndrome...I'm not dizzy over the use of a word, but sometimes when you are introduced to a new concept/word that may be something that is foreign to you(or the country you live in), sometimes it makes you see things in a little different light...
thats all I was trying to say with my post...
some of us who live in the United States may not be familiar with some of the germanic concepts you europeans take for granted...

what is you had never heard the word 'freedom'?
what if it was a new concept to you?

I don't see how you could interpret my post as me being 'dizzy' over the word zeitgeist...
because i'm not...I just think its interesting this is the name Billy chose for the album...
and I wanted to post my thoughts on it...
but it seems to me that if you are somebody that didn't already know what 'zeitgeist' was, then you better not admit it on netphoria or people with think your an idiot...
I'm sorry if you think I'm an idiot for not knowing what 'zeitgeist' was before...

You just sound really whiny when you end every sentence with an ellipsis. A single period makes your sentences more definite, with the added benefit of making you look intelligent.

That and capitalization. I used to write like you all the time, but I learned that it's worth the added effort to actually hold the shift key and only add one period at a time.

this is not a bad post really

billy is an artist...and like many he's influenced by the general going's on around him

at the moment there's a lot happening in the world and esp .america. being a resident of that country he looks, sees a few things and then, as an artist would, creates work voicing his feelings and opinions on it aswell as general things he thinks and feels

so as stated before...these are his musings on the spirit of the times...or what they should be in his opinion - not overtly political - more social observations

I think that's it...obv imo

though the album cover to me still looks like a rush job since the other cover 'theme' was blown up by those guys who stole the pics

I still say the cover was gonna be in that other font (tarantula single) with the flag

We know Billy is partially culminating a political/philosophical dressing on the new album but that's all the title amounts to. From the songs I have heard so far, they still have some classic generic Billy meaning rather than full blown statements. It's pretty easy to look at this title and the songs we have heard so far and just be amused by it's basic approach and pretty lazy attempt to address real issues with pop/rock songs. But that's just it, Billy fucks around with the image. The songs are not directly saying anything at all, rather dancing around the perilous edges of a real statement and playing with them for multiple/general meanings.

So what does the title really convey?
Billy knows the deal, but he is not about to change his band by becoming a political/philosophical commentator. It's a dressing, a concept that exists and matters, a reflection of what perhaps is affecting Billy and some songs do convey it, but it's still mainly general.

is billy on gandhi's level no, but billy has influenced and effected the lives of everyone here on this forum in one way or another at some time in their life or they wouldn't be here posting on this forum...

I think billy still goes out there on stage everynight and lays it all down for us...
maybe I'm naive...but does it really matter? this man's music speaks to my heart and my soul just as much now as it ever did...

I'm fucked aren't I?I mean....I didn't even know what Zeitgeist was before the smashing pumpkins brought it to my attention....
somebody call the cops!!!! I need to be shot!!!! locked up like a blood clot!!!

I don't think billy will ever stop believing rock'n'roll can change the world....it has changed the world, and it still can change the world, and I think billy is still trying to make music that will maybe effect people on a level that will inspire them to go and be the change in the world that some of us would like to see...to be love, to bleed love...you're right I'm an idiot why would billy want to try to make music that would inspire me to try and be a better version of me...

I still stand by my original post, obvioulsy the rest of the world was very familiar with zeitgeist, but I had never come across the word before, please excuse my ignorance...but I still believe billy wants us to really take a look at our life and times and examine the spirit of our age truthfully...we can change the world, if we want, but some don't care, we have all we need and all we want, why would we want to change anything....
here I'm allowed everything all of the time....right thom? how could that possibly be bad?

but I also think Billy syas things in his songs that are worth hearing, maybe its not what you want to hear, but I don't think billy uses generic lyrics, feel free to point out how wrong I am once again....

I feel the same way as you do.
And it is people like us that Billy has always been able to get through to. I didnt have a clue what 'ziegeist' meant but there was no question as to what billy intended when I found out the meaning.
Rock can and has and will change the world. Billy is on his own level, a level that can touch souls that Ghandi could not. Ghandi never went through the things Billy has, not that I am in any way dissing Ghandi here. I just think for me, Billy is more emotionally, spiritually, mentally approachable. Billy's music and lyrics come from his heart, his soul, and he pours himself into it, and on stage, and that is what makes him different than all the rest. Most of the people at shows, on this board, on many boards could care less about Billy or the band, other than to criticize, or make fun of or try to take advantage of. That is how most of society lives life these days. Billy envisions a different way of life, a different motivation, I agree with his vision, I want that too, and there are alot of us that do. It's not 'Billy's vision per se after all. It is a vision of peace, of love and of understanding. We can change things, each one of us can, we are responsible for whatever choice we make, be it for bad or good, your either part of the solution or part of the problem. It all begins with yourself, that is the only way to change things. So, one by one, those that see and feel and hear what Billy is singing, what he is about, what he is giving, what he is trying to show us all, they will change, and that is how the world can change.
Billy once again, as you always have, you amaze, inspire, and filly my heart with happiness, for you truly are and have always been a blessing.
:)

the maniphesto continues...
i believe it was gandhi who said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."...
is billy on gandhi's level no, but billy has influenced and effected the lives of everyone here on this forum in one way or another at some time in their life or they wouldn't be here posting on this forum...

I think billy still goes out there on stage everynight and lays it all down for us...
maybe I'm naive...but does it really matter? this man's music speaks to my heart and my soul just as much now as it ever did...
I love being slammed and flamed for voicing my opinion....
I don't think enough people in this thread have let me know how big an idiot I am for believing in the pumpkins music and what they are doing...

how dumb am I? I actually like the cover of the album....
how big an idiot am I? I actullay like the new band....

Bring the Light Billy!!!! I'm ready!!!!!! Flame ON!!!!

TL;DR

if you like the dictionary so much i suggest you look up the word "concise" and try to apply it to your next post.

theeggofhope...I like your analysis...I thought about this too, and I generally agree with you. I know Billy wants people to raise in their awareness of how fucked up and wrong our society is....and I guess Zeitgeist just fits. Thanks for your post!

source: rock am ring lyrics

you will fly away again
you will
straight into the heart of the sun(a pink floyd reference to set the controls for the heart of the sun?)
straight into the heart of everyone
you will break my heart against
my will
love bleeding out of a gun
oh, bleeding out of everyone

you fly away when you say you won't
you follow when you swear you just don't
I can't rule you no more

go buy you another sun
buy you another sun to love
go find you another sun

go buy you another sun
go find you another sun to gun down
go find you
another sun

you don't want me anymore
you don't love me anymore
no more

you will fly away again you will
you will fly away again you will
right(?) into the heart of the sun
you will break my heart against my will
you will break my heart against my will
love bleeding out of your gun
