NBC Will Broadcast 22 Hours Of Live Earth On July 7

June 1, 2007 9:30 a.m. EST

Kimberly Spice - AHN News Writer

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - NBC has won the broadcast rights to air Live Earth on July 7. NBC will dedicate 22 hours of coverage with live and pre-recorded segments which will start airing at 4 a.m.

The event is backed by Live 8 producers and will cover nine venues worldwide with over 100 artists performing.

The U.S., U.K., Brazil, China, Australia, South Africa, Japan and Germany will be hosting cities. Performers Kelly Clarkson, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, The Police, Akon, Smashing Pumpkins, Kanye West and Sheryl Crow, in addition to other major headliners, will also participate.

President of NBC Universal Cable, Jeff Gaspin, is quoted as saying, "By leveraging all of our properties, we will reach millions of viewers with this important call to action to combat global warming, while offering our audiences an incredible entertainment experience from today's biggest artists."

The growth of public awareness began shortly after former Presidential running candidate Al Gore's Academy Award winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," opened in theatres around the globe in 2006.

The two hours they didn't cover will be where the Pumpkins would be shown, After all Al Gore invented the Internets and is under strict orders not to leak the footage to us.

Coverage always sucks for these things. They'll show if your lucky 1-2 complete songs.

TV coverage won't be complete... you'll get 1-2 songs. Watch the internet feeds.

Dearest Pale Princess - you would hate "sp2" if it were the greatest thing ever, so you may as well spare us "comparisons" such as the preceding.

Nonetheless, I won't killfile you. :D

I'll never forgive the American broadcast of Live 8 that cut off the Pink Floyd performance in the middle.

Ooh, cant wait to see Kelly Clarkson's set

Her fat ass will restrict viewing of said set.

I wonder what the crowd response of SP's performance will be. I'm guessing utter silence.

It'll be cool to see SP on mainstream television again though, whether it's short or not.

its kinda sad, but their latest song isn't that bad.... as in kinda good, only if I never knew who was actually performing the song, but I then remember who they are and remember how bad they suck.

Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" raised much awareness on the issue of global warming, but I don't see these concerts doing the same. Maybe I'm just too critical of these "raise awareness" concerts, but I don't see how performances of songs like "Today," "Roxanne," or "If It Makes You Happy" is going to influence people to buy hybrid cars or those energy-efficient lightbulbs.
