With the new tour and open-taping policy, I figure we'll be seeing alot more torrents, and more people will want them.

Here is an awesome Bittorrent FAQ:
http://dessent.net/btfaq/

FLAC files:

All around awesome program: http://thor.prohosting.com/roh0205/

You can play them with:
Foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org, my choice)
Winamp (www.winamp.com, with plugin)
iTunes (with this mod: http://playlistmag.com/news/2006/07/11/ogg/index.php)

You can convert with:
Foobar2000 (have the LAME mp3 codec installed for best results, if making mp3)
Flac frontend (flac.sf.net)

MAC USERS:
use this: http://sbooth.org/Max/

remember, most tapers don't want you to make mp3s of their shows, except for personal use (your ipod, etc). You should never make mp3 files of a show and put them online unless the taper gives you explicit permission to do so.

and please, DON'T EVEN TALK ABOUT THIS in the forums. some of you saw what happened today with our friend BillyKicker, who is now banned.

I also reccomend using uTorrent.

XACT is all you need to decode Flac/SHN on Mac.

As for playing them, I think VLC Media Player does that and everything else under the sun.

Ok I got the flac plug in.

how do I play it?

There is a folder, with a bunch of files..?

redbull
05-25-2007, 05:26 PM
you need to put it into the plugins folder and then restart winamp. I havent used winamp in a long time, but it will have a bunch of .dll files like "lame_in.dll" and "lame_out.dll"

MisterSquishyHalo
05-25-2007, 05:33 PM
Yeah I got that now. I can listen to it :)

Now I got to burn it to mp3..so I can put it on a cd so I can listen while I drive.

make a wav out of it, not an mp3. you wont lose quality that way.

44.1k/16bit wav is the audio-cd standard, when you burn a cd from mp3 files, the burning program just converts them to wav and then burns that.

to convert, load the files into frontend, choose an output directory, and hit "decode". MAKE SURE THAT "DELETE INPUT FILES" IS NOT CHECKED.

I already made sure of that. Don't want to delete those bad boys ;)

It doesnt give me a choice what to decode into..unless it was a wav file before hand.

I don't want to make things too easy for you guys because I'm also not a fan of polluting trading pools, but there is somewhat easy way to convert your flacs to v0 mp3s while retaining the tags and skipping the wav process.

<all2lame + flac codec + lame codec + tag.exe will get you there, just don't post them on the internets otherwise you are a buttsex loving buttsex lover>

They won't work through Nero, or any program where you're trying to burn an audio CD. The reason why is because 24 bit is not the bit-rate that is used on audio CDs, 16 bit is. Basically, all you can do is listen to those files on your computer, or burn them to a DVD and play them on the DVD-A(audio) player you probably don't have.

The New
05-26-2007, 10:51 AM
The other options are, downsample them to 16 bit which i'm pretty sure audacity can do (don't use it myself, so not sure), and is free
Or download the 16 bit version

kennyc
05-26-2007, 11:31 AM
Ahhh yes, thanks guys. I should have just DLed the 16-bit version. Oh well, I found away to convert them to 16-bit, and they work fine on the CD! Thanks again :D

So I downloaded the torrent file, and I downloaded the Max program (I'm on a mac) but now Max won't accept the torrent files to convert to wavs or mp3s or whatever. I feel like I missed step somewhere maybe.

you need to open the torrent in a bit torrent program--then you download the actual files.

Hi I have a question:

the download *******s the flacs, a .txt and then

an .ffp file

and an .md5 file

what are these 2 for? I can open the flacs with my player but have no clue what these 2 files do. can anyone help me?

CherubDaydream
06-10-2007, 07:56 AM
ffp is for "flac fingerprints" and the file can be used for testing flac files for their integrity.
an .md5 file contains a checksum for one or more files, also for the sake of checking file integrity, but it's more commonly used for .shn files

audacity (mac os x)

should do the trick

no.

just use cdwav

cd wave editor is the way to go to split tracks.

That's the link to download CD Wave Editor. It's about 600K to download... won't change any file associations, and is pretty darn simple, especially if you're intimidated by Cool Edit (which, by the way, despite offering "Split on Blocks" in the help menu, does not, in fact, offer this option, in Cool Edit Pro 2.1)

Open the wav file. Then go the Split menu, then select Auto Split. Then Click OK.

3) I Am One/
4) Not Worth Asking (Original Single, 1989)
5) Tristessa/
6) La Dolly Vita/
7) HoneySpider (Original Sub Pop Single, 1990)
8) Jackie Blue (Pravda CD/LP Compilation, 1991)
9) Daughter (Reflex Magazine Flexi, 1992)
10) Drown ("Singles" OST CD, 1992)
11) Terrapin/

13) Glynis ("No Alternative", Arista CD, 1993)

the links http://dessent.net/btfaq/ and http://thor.prohosting.com/roh0205/ are defunct.

One good hint for mac users: I like the small handy program Vox to listen to flac files directly. It also has export abilities (WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless). Might be handy if you wanna pre-listen before making a lossy version.
