View Full Version : I need haircut ideas

I really like having long hair and putting it in braided pigtails and all that, but I've come to grips with what a pain in the ass it is to wash it and brush it a hundred times a day. I need a haircut, bad. But I haven't had a real drastic cut in about 3 years and I have no idea where to even start.

Ideas?

My head's kinda oval shaped. I don't know what looks good on me. :\

I like your bangs, maybe you could do a shoulder (or a little longer) shaggy cut?

I have decided that I do not want you to cut your hair. You remind me of alexis bledel and I like that.

Chris is trying to get me to let him shave my head this summer before we graduate and have to get jobs, etc. After much begging, I finally had to tell him that I don't think I'm the girl that shaves her head anymore :(

Serious answer:

My experience with haircuts is that you get what you pay for. This may not be what you want now, but when you start job hunting, find a good salon -- the kind of that has levels of stylists. If you book an appointment with a senior master stylist, yeah it's going to run you about $60-$70. But the younger, less experienced stylists are working at that same place with the same high standards. So you book an appointment and just talk through it with the person and tell them what you want and what your ideas are and how high maintenance you want your cut to be. Then, voila, totally hottie.

Yeah, I got my own lady. Her name is JoAnne. She did my hair for the wedding and gave me my first set of bangs since I was a child. She's also been cutting Chris's family's hair for over 20 years... She's the best I've ever had.

The kid in the middle of that picture Kristin posted looks like Dakota Fanning. :erm:

I think more than anything, I want more layers.

This is pretty cute:

If not a bit shorter. My hair grows at super speeds, so trimming it just a few inches won't have accomplished much by the end of summer-- that's why I was thinking of going super short.

do you want a sleek cut or do you want it to look a bit messy?

avian chaos
05-06-2007, 11:08 PM
I don't think my hair is capable of looking sleek.

avian chaos
05-06-2007, 11:09 PM
I find your question misleading, Bardy, 'cause it seems like whether you have a sleek cut or a messy 'do, either one is asking for a heck of a lot of maintenance, and that's the opposite of what I'm looking for. I just want to cut my hair so I can stop worrying about buying conditioner and all that crap.

bardy
05-06-2007, 11:13 PM
oh, your hair seems to be pretty straight and fine in your pictures. maybe I am mislead.

If you get something super short then you just wash it and put some wax in it and go...

chin length hair styles are pretty high maintenance... I used to go between long and short hair. Short hair sucks becuase you HAVE to style it every day, you can't really put it up into a pony tail. I suppose you can put a bandana or scarf over it and call it a day or do something crazy with bobby pins... but it's sort of a pain.

I would go with something long enough to put into a pony tail.

On a side note, I wish that I could have bangs. I have a stupid cowlick in the front of my head and would make them weird looking :(

avian chaos
05-06-2007, 11:18 PM
Yeah... Having super hair short seems ideal just because, well, it's short! No knots or anything, just wash it 'n' go, but I'd definitely want a backup plan (ie., a ponytail!) in the event of a bad hair day.

I'm sorry to hear about your cowlick Brady :( When I was a kid I kind of wished I had a cowlick, or a widow's peak, or something, but now I'm kinda glad I just have straight boring hair.

My hair's biggest problem, which maybe you can help me with! Is that it doesn't stay "clean" throughout the day. Does that make sense? I wash it and blowdry my bangs and it'll look great for the first half of the day or so, but after a few hours it looks greasy again. What gives? It's probably just my oily skin.

It could be the conditioner you use! Wash your face after conditioning your hair if you already don't, and try not to use the super moisturizing stuff if possible. Or just don't apply it to the roots.

bardy
05-06-2007, 11:22 PM
in highschool my friends used to put a bit of baby powder in the roots of their hair, it soaks up the oil so it doesnt get distributed through the hair. I never did this but it might work! Also what kind of shampoo do you use? Some tea tree oil shampoo might dry your scalp up a bit! and it's tingly.

and do you touch your face a lot? that's always bad for getting things oily :( I fall victim to this cause my nose is always itchy!!

ohnoitsbonnie
05-06-2007, 11:25 PM
Sometimes I wish I made more oil because my face and hands are so dry. Well, only in the winter, but still. I don't even leave fingerprints on glass.

Right now my nose feels kind of raw and warm because I did manual labor all day in the sun. It's not quite a burn because I don't get burns much, but it'll fade to a light tan tomorrow.

I am a little OCD about putting on lotion. I hate washing my hands becuase they feel so dry afterwards unless I have access to a bottle of lotion. I also have to put lotion on immediately after I get out of the shower or else I am twitchy all day. It helps my excema too.

and I was looking on the net about the oily scalp thing, apparently hair spray will soak up oils so you could try spraying your roots with some hair spray at the beginning of the day.

On the subject of hair, I think you should stay long, because frankly, you look fabulous. Keep it long enough to, yeah, put your hair up on bad hair days and such, and also to make those little braids. I see those in your pictures and I think they're awesome. I wish I could do those ;_; Cutting your hair really short can be fun for a while, but the eventual decision of regrowth wears away at you after a while. I'm still growing mine out, and I hate the waiting.

Eeek! I want lotion so bad. You know that sanded feeling you get after handling dirt all day? Caked mud on your hands, and when you ball up your fists, it all crumbles and turns into sand again? Yeah. Well my hands feel like that. So so dry. I got cuts in some places too.

ugh yeah when I spend a couple hours working around an aggregate plant, I get rock dust all over myself and it makes my skin and hair soooooo dry. it's so gross :(

ohnoitsbonnie

I think somehow when the wind picks up and blows the dust around it also erodes away at your skin and that just adds to the discomfort and dryness. :/

Mine are like this right now too. I don't get it. I guess it has to do with moving to a different climate and the fact that humidity has been low lately, but I'm at the point now where if my hand accidentally rubs against a rough fabric, I'll be be bleeding. I want it fixed. :(

Heh, I feel like my hair is the least high maitenance when it's long...every time I get a cut I have to worry about the way it curves and all that, plus no matter how much I pay they always do what I tell them not to do. I hate getting hair cuts. If anything I think you should just get a few inches trimmed off - don't do anything too drastic.

unless its seriously out of control, just leave it long.

but i dont think guys usually give a fuck about hair most of the time, the girls probably have the best advice here. ive always thought as long as theres long hair and you dont look like a guy than it's fine, mess around with it however you want from there.

Bonnie, we can swap some of my oily skin for some of your dry skin. I'm the exact opposite of you, I can't touch anything without leaving a fingerprint. I hate letting other people use my cameras 'cause I'm embarassed of the supershine on the viewfinder from holding it up to my face. According to my mom, this is a good thing, though-- she's pushing 50 and has nary a wrinkle in sight.

Thanks for the tips on keeping my hair less oily, too! I have used tea tree shampoo in the recent months but I didn't see any improvement on oiliness. I recently stopped conditioning my hair hoping that'd help, but only a little. I'll try the baby powder thing... I also never wash my face in the morning, so I guess that could certainly provide results.

I've wanted to cut my hair like this for a bit, but I don't know.. I like it cause it looks good in a ponytail. I have an awful profile, so it's nice to have a kind of bob infront, YA KNOW?!

What was your name? I must not have recognized you. Or was it super recently? I haven't been on there in a few days 'cause of school and other stuff.

And Geo, I used to think my hair was super thin, but when I met my hair cutter (?? Stylist sounds too fancy for someone who just cuts my bangs) she told me that my hair is actually kind of thick in the back. So, thin in the front, thick in the back?
