I figured not everyone reads that monster thread, but may still be interested in seeing the footage.
Go here:
http://opensourceresistance.net/
There's a link to the "Rescued Footage".
In case you're interested - less than 50 fans were selected randomly to attend an AIR meeting ("Art Is Resistance"...part of the whole Year Zero story, see the other thread for details) - they were led to a secret location, lectured by the guy who runs opensourceresistance.net, and then led downstairs to be greeted by the opening notes of The Beginning of the End, a new track off Year Zero. And then the whole thing was broken up by the "police"/"SWAT"/whatever.
EDIT: If you'd rather download the torrent than watch the streaming video on OSR, go here: http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1120774/3100888/
EDIT again: Here's some screen caps copied from ETS for you too
i've found AIR shit where i live. like a fair bit of it.i live in fremantle, which is like a small-ish town thats still considered fairly separate from the city of perth itself, so its a medium-sized business area in the middle. i must have spotted 5 different small AIR flag stickers on billboards, walls, bins, crap like that. the first two were just printed off and stuck on with a bit of blu-tack. they were all relatively small. now tonight i saw a poster design i saw again just a while ago on OSR, which i hadnt been to yet. its kinda eerie.

great post stacee, thanks for the link
this whole story and the way it has been executed has been just unbelieveable. i've never been more excited about talking about this with friends or sharing it to people who don't know whats going on. this album is absolutely stellar, completely revived my love for nine inch nails. to have a great concept, and have the record come through so solidly, i couldn't ask for more.

Yes, exactly. Even though a part of me is so jealous that these few lucky people got to be there and I may never get to experience something like that...just reading people's 1st hand accounts and seeing the photos they took afterward of them all wide-eyed and adrenaline-filled. I can just imagine how they felt and it makes me happy that Trent is going through all this effort and planning to make this such a special experience.
Not to mention the fact that I honestly think it's working - people ARE waking up, people are starting to feel. The youth really need to stop being so apathetic towards everything going on nowadays. I love the fact that the guy says something along the lines of... "I don't want you to buy what I'm selling, I just want you to realize you have a voice. Stand up for whatever means something to you, etc etc"
It inspired me to print out some of the art on osr.net and I'm going to pass some of it out.
Also - people are trying to organize a meeting here in Chicago for Monday maybe...at least to get together and brain storm some ideas, go around and put up some flyers and stuff. I'm probably going to go - so if anyone from here is interested in tagging along, I'll do whatever I can to help you out.

They need to just put a thread for each city to organize that but they won't because there'll be too many. Psh...whatever.
Go check out the thread on ETS and look at the list. I want to try to find a place where we can all talk about the meeting...Hm.

I bet Billy is furious with jealousy that Trent was not only able to pull of a concept record, but execute (and market) it excellently. Plus, it might actually do some good if people get into the whole "using your voice" and "art not violence" stuff. Something Billy always ranted about, saving the world with music . . . but he sat on his ass and didn't back it up.
I don't know half of the story, and that doesn't matter to me. What matters it that Year Zero is a solid fucking record, so when the game fades away the music can still stand on it's own.

Considering most of the flyers people are making and putting up have nothing to do with the album itself - can't you see how we're all pawns set up for marketing?!!

He's going to sell just as many copies with or without this whole story. The fact that he's invested so much time, energy and money into it shows that it's not only something he's immensely proud of - but a gift for the fans. The people that are into this story were going to buy the album with or without a story. A solid album makes sales - not kids putting up flyers.
Think what you will, but a lot of us can easily see that Trent is trying a different method to get his message out there to all of us and he's doing a damn good job of it. We hear him loud and clear.

i'd like to just throw in there that woodfield isn't really that awesome. i worked there over a holiday one year. that was more than enough to ruin it for me.
i also don't know how you can refute the fact that this is a marketing campaign. albeit a really innovative one, i have to agree that this is just going to come down to $$$ for a lot of people involved in the NIN camp. yeah, trent most likely wants to continue his artistic 100 m dash but people around him are more than happy to get in on it because of how lucretive it's going to end up being.

I think it's an innovative artistic expression. Sure it could also double as a marketing campaign but that's not the point. That's all I'm saying.
lol and yeah, Woodfield around the holidays is horrible - I went there once on CHRISTMAS EVE...I couldn't even find parking for 20 minutes, even on "perimeter drive" lol - but the rest of the year it's pretty sweet, so long as you got money to spend. mmmmikea. ;)
BTW - I'm trying to see if I can convince some of these people to gather on Sunday for Earth Day to help clean up something (a park, the streets, forest preserves, lake - something, not sure what yet) and maybe that would a.) give us something good to do and b.) give us an opportunity to share ideas/get to know each other without just sitting around a table with notebooks like "so what are we gonna do?".
People were suggesting getting together for volunteer work too...I do some volunteer stuff for animal shelters here, but I think it might be a good idea to have each person in the group get involved with volunteering in an area that interests them - and then trying to recruit people to help.

and to the people saying this is a marketing ploy, I ask you why that even matters? whether Trent Reznor is just out for records sales or not, the ARG/album has been successful in achieving a lot more than making him money. it's entertaining and thought-provoking and involving so honestly I don't give a shit about good intentions.
cashboy
04-20-2007, 04:18 PM
That guy giving the speech in the beginning was pretty cheesy, but if I probably had been keeping up with the ARG from the beginning it would have been pretty cool. The surprise gig was awesome though. I went back and listened to Year Zero some more and its starting to grow on me. I think I'm too lazy to go back and read up on everything though. It's weird nin's always been one of my favorite bands but I've never had an attachment or bond to them like I do with all my other favorite bands partly because I found Reznor to be bit of a boring personality and the lyrical content of his music was so shabby and shallow. I was watching some old interviews for alternative nation and he actually seems like an alright guy. And I realized nin probably more part of my life than I'd like to admit. So it's cool after all these years he's still relevant and now he's got this thing going on, kudos to him. I don't find it a shameless marketing ploy. Just getting one person to care about something is a success in my book. Even then it seems like its pretty entertaining. Really puts Billy's mickey mouse mysteries and cartoons to shame.
KrazeeStacee
04-20-2007, 04:34 PM
Exactly, cashboy. I had the same feelings - I mean I always like NIN but it was just more of a mood that I was in to listen to them and I never really seemed to care much for Trent aside from the fact that he could make anything sound hottt.
But now this opens up a whole new side of him that I never knew. Did you guys see the video of him speaking out against fur on PETA? I didn't watch it because apparently he talks about all the bad things they do to animals, and I'm just not in the mood to hear about it. But between that and all this ARG stuff it's really showing his true colors. He's a pretty awesome, down to earth kinda guy that seems like he just wants to use his voice to move people. I think he's realized what a bunch of pathetic, apathetic losers most of his fans are and now he's trying to do something about it ;) lol, but seriously, I think this is awesome and I really can't wait to see it take off into an actual movement. This is something much bigger than any album release. And the fact that Trent is going to continue this all the way until next year's album shows how dedicated he is, if it was all over a few months from now people would just lose interest - but to keep building this whole idea up for a whole year...I'm pretty sure we're going to get more fuel to feed this fire.
KrazeeStacee
04-20-2007, 04:51 PM
can someone be kind enough to fill me in, or is it just way too complicated?
The whole story?
Well...the whole thing is too complicated - it's something you have to be following consistently to get the whole idea...there's soldiers at war, there's kids at resistance meetings being exposed to a lethal biological weapons, there's Evangelicals controlling the government - watching everything you do, controlling your children and whether or not you can have them, there's mind controlling drugs in the water marketed as a safety against biological warfare, there's serious climate change problems due to global warming, there's a big mysterious hand that comes out from the sky and freaks people out - which is still unexplained at this point, there's an underground movement called Art Is Resistance (AIR) that is basically set up to fight against the wrongs of the world using the power of art instead of violence. This is the Year Zero - aka 2022...which is the year when the government got rid of elections and turned phsycotic. What they call "The year of cleansing" or some crazy shit. All of the websites that we have up until this point are all websites that were sent back in a transmission from the future - from rebels who wanted to warn us to try to prevent Year Zero from happening.
So basically what's probably important for you to know is that AIR group...supposedly the first meeting was April 18th, 2007...which obviously was this past Wednesday - also the day of the "secret" NIN show.
opensourceresistance.net is a website that someone from our time has made (the guy speaking in the beginning of the NIN footage) because he received these websites too and he wants to start a resistance movement to try to help people motivate themselves to use their voice - to not be silenced by the government.
This is where the story starts to branch out and become a reality. When you signed up for this guy's mailing list, you got an email last week about a meeting. Meet in front of the mural in LA and there will be a van there, get your package and leave. So hundreds of people lined up and got their package - which was an ammo box full of markers, stickers, flyers, etc (get it? ammo = art? har har) A select few (30) people got cellphones in their boxes. They got phone calls from that dude telling them that there was a secret meeting, not to tell anyone about it and that your cellphone was your "ticket" in - you were allowed to bring one friend.
When the people met up (less than 50) they were greeted with release forms they had to sign saying they were okay with being filmed and all sorts of other crap. They got on a bus that had black paper over the windows so you couldn't see where you were going. They led the kids into a warehouse building and that's what's on the video...so you can watch the rest. They still have the cellphones so at this point people are just waiting to hear what's next. Meanwhile - if you go to opensourceresistance.net you see his message about meeting:
This is not a website: it’s an idea. You don’t have to like the books we read or the causes we support.
Your meeting in Detroit or Dallas doesn’t have to be like ours: but you should meet.
You don’t have to vote for my candidate: but you should vote.
You don’t have to say what I would say: but you should sure as hell speak, while you still have a voice.
So right now there are people organizing actual resistance meetings - to gather and support the idea of "having a voice"...trying to motivate people to find something they feel strongly about and stand up for a cause. "WAKE UP AND GIVE A SHIT!" as the dude says in the video.
...and that's about it, your eyes bleeding yet?

I remember a quote from Billy somewhere in the mid 90s that said essentially "Trent Reznor is the future of music, technology with soul."
I always thought that was a pretty good description of him.

Unfortunately he couldn't be more wrong about the future of music. It's become pop / emo garbage.
That description of Reznor is spot-on. Nine Inch Nails are one of the best bands still around from the Ninties, and he's still making amazing music, even in his 40s. More than I can say for Corgan and his solo album.

aside from the ARG, this show put on an incredible example of a cutting edge, grass-roots meeting. everyone should go and read this book, especially if you're at all interested in the message of year zero. you'll see how relevant this all is today, not just a fictional world set 15 years in the future.

It's actually pretty cool though, because the ARG does have a lot of aspects in it that reflect an exaggerated version of things happening now - and people have researched everything to death on ETS trying to find links and understand things better...trying to be one step ahead. But everyone's learned a lot I think, it seems like it's really made a lot of people aware. Hence why they're trying to start up these groups for real because it's scared everybody!

I was just listening to AWITHA TEETHA on the Beside You In Time DVD and I finally placed what the one percussion sounds like - pop rocks melting in your mouth. (if you wear headphones and crank it you can almost feel it in your throat)

I was just screaming to "Last" in the car coming home from work. Good times, good times.
I really hope he comes to New Orleans and plays Last, Mr Self Destruct, WITT, and La Mer.
A special treat would be The Only Time!

As cool as the Closer/Only Time bit is, if I were to see them live, I think I'd prefer the original version of the song. The part at the end when they rock out to the "Downward Spiral" riff a la AATCHB DVD is my favorite. I don't like that they're cutting it short now.
Which reminds me. I'd like to add "Downward Spiral" to the list of songs I hope to see live. If they actually started performing that again...I'm talking orgasmic. Probably my favorite track from that CD.
Anyone see the leaked Closure DVD? The extra Appendage footage shows part of that song live. They're behind the curtain, and it's a video of a large, empty room suddenly being filled blood from the ceiling down when the rocking part of the song kicks in. I wish I would have been there to see that in person! That curtain rocks.
