Thought this was interesting: (Butch Vig is the drummer for Garbage and producer of SD and Gish.)
http://www.garbage.suite.dk/articles/moderndrummer/
Butch Vig has produced some of the greatest drummers of the post-punk generation. Here are his thoughts
Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins
Jimmy is part of what made the Pumpkins sound the way they did. He and Billy Corgan developed almost a sixth sense of communication in terms of the push/pull that they had with the rhythms. And sometimes it was in the same bar. The top of the bar might push and the back of the bar might pull. It's something you can't really define. But if I heard a new track they were working on without being told it was them, I swear I could tell just by the rhythm guitar and drums. It's the way they play off each other.
Jimmy has incredible dynamics and feel. I rarely used click tracks with the Pumpkins. There are points where it speeds up or slows down, but that's part of the feel, and to me it always worked with the song. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "Hummer," from Siamese Dream. At the end it goes into a sort of free-form, almost jazzy outro, where he's riding the hats and the ride cymbal, with the little grace notes on the snare. We had to do a lot of takes to get the one we wanted, but it's basically a live take. An amazing performance.

he did clix for no songs with the pumpkins, he said that sometimes he used a drum machine for recording some songs, SOME songs, but no clix
Zwan was all clix though, every fucking song, part of the reason why it sucked imo
and some of the JCC tracks were clicked.

there are clicks running through their (usually) headphones in order for them to stay in time. some bands even use them live in their in ear monitors (u2 for example.)

Butch Vig is the best producer in the world but the worst drummer in the world. He uses a click-track live and all these other effects and bullshit.. absolutely awful.
Hummer is the best song ever though, best on Siamese Dream for sure....they have to ressurect this one.
im a fan of nigel godrich. he produced alot of radiohead albums: kid a, amnesiac, ok computer and beck albums : mutations, sea change, guero, and the information.
