Everyone seems to be obsessed with this 7 deadly sins thing at the moment, and whether it is true or not I'm not sure. As TPQ made clear in London, the cover of the album was being finished by an artist rather than a photographer, and while we know they had spoken to Banksy who was later rejected - this made me think of an exhibition which occurred in LA about the time of TPQ's visit - concerning...

Mercedes Helnwein - Her most recent series of drawings, The Book of Disquiet, based on the seven deadly sins, opened on December 11th, 2006, downtown Los Angeles.

The exhibition got a high profile, and was attended by several celebrities, even having a review written by Jason Lee in Anthem Magazine. Her father Gottfried Helnwein is responsible for working with Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and is a well known and respected artist & photographer...

It would be interesting if she was responsible for the artwork for the Album anyway...

photography != art, then?

however i dont mind the stuff on her website, and sp2 could certainly do worse...

haha, the photography/ artist debate is a good one.. I guess it depends on your deffinition. I do regard Photography as great art... however what I believe was implied was that it would be applied arts for the cover such as drawing/painting etc

You have to be a damn good photographer to really be an artist. I like taking pictures and dabbling, but I'm certainly far from being an "artist" with my camera.

True. But would you say that the cover of Adore is or is not 'art'?

Art, in its broadest meaning, is the expression of creativity or imagination, or both -whatever the medium.

The Adore pics were OK, but nothing to write home about. That's my opinion. Submit your own before flaming.

Artwork is moot if the music sucks.

Lets hope that's not the case.

where is that banksy info from?

In London, TPQ mentioned that there had been discussions with Banksy however in the end nothing came of it. She seemed to have a pretty negative attitude towards him.

that would have been cool

I don't know, he has lost most of his charm... it is starting to wear extremely thin. There was an interesting article recently about how (he claimed) galleries where trying to destroy his guerilla art by selling it at high prices at auction, as well as in editions of prints that your average man on the street could not afford. I haven't made my mind up on him however....

i love gottfried helnwein though if this weren't his daughter i think she'd be getting totally ripped to shreds. it's only slightly different but for the most part she's doing what he's already done. their style is so similar {and i know style isn't EVERYTHING but it's a large part of your work} and that kind of sucks... but maybe she's trying to make a statement with that. who knows. all i have to say is imo they should get her old man to do it if they really did hire her. or whatever. banksy would've been pretty interesting.

I believe you are correct, actually. I would also like to apologize to Avenir for calling it "unremarkable." I am sorry Avenir, I will continue to use you extensively in my projects. I just don't see you as being an album cover sort of typeface. You are solid and dependable and clean and a rock album demands something a little crazier. No one is going to develop a shitty toss-off version of you and put it in some Smashing Pumpkins Font Collection.

Well this is about all the confirmation there can be. Taken from Sasha Grey's Myspace blog from Feb. 13:

"When I got back from SF I also did a photo-shoot for my friend's album that I am very excited about-and I am very proud of him. It was intensely creative. More details in the future…"

Not only am I a fan of her anal and ultra-hardcore tendencies, but she has Bowie and Tool references in her photo gallery. I'm really sold on this chick now.

However, I hope to god that this porn star photo shoot thing is nothing more than a stupid joke. Unless there's fisting involved.....

not at all pleasant but...very interesting art. she draws alot of people that look dead or injuried ...
Though the book of disquiet is haunting it's achieved alot. She tried to capture those essences and did. Most people like painting lighthouses and brooks... this woman really captured manifesations of the dark side of the soul or diminishing soul. The envy one is really unpleasant but there's alot to be said about what she was able to capture.

Her art is way better than her Dad's so far... she's austrian and Irish. Interesting.

and his stuff with the little children is burn worthy. No wonder he's worked with marilyn manson. they do the same kind of lame shock effect with horrible themes.
totally uninteresting and statementless.
