reality doesn't seem to exist in terms of the ps3, i guess. even if it was on par with the price of the 360, many games look considerably white washed and plain on the ps3 compared to the exact same game on the 360. Armored Core 4 comes to mind...

Have you seen the trailer for the new Ratchet and Clank? PS3 needs games like this TODAY. Honestly, it has the best advanced visuals I've seen in a console game to date. It looks like prerendered CG. Like Pixar or something.

In the long run Blu Ray will prove to be very useful for games since you can have a much greater texture variety... not to mention there's a hard drive to install huge chunks of games to. The question is if the mainstream will give a shit about this, and quite honestly, I don't think they will as long as Sony stays in la-la land and keeps it priced at $600.

i don't think they would either way. even with the installs, ps3 games still have load times and in a basketball game i saw being played on an in store kiosk the players limbs went through the bodies of other players. I just got an upconverting dvd player and it came with one, it's totally rad. 1 cable doing the work of 5, what will they think of next? Speaking with GameSpot during GDC, Final Fantasy creator and head of Mistwalker Studio, Hironobu Sakaguchi, had some interesting things to say about his recent projects, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, as well as a few choice thoughts on Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and game development in general. One nice bit of info: There will be a playable demo of Blue Dragon available on Marketplace before the game ships in August (Sakaguchi hopes for a June or July release for the demo).

Speaking about the Xbox 360 itself, Sakaguchi believes it to be an excellent development platform. Sakaguchi notes his collaboration with Artoon and Ensemble Studios, stating that it has been very beneficial to his development process. Sakaguchi says that once he saw how well the 360 handled water effects, he actually created more ponds and lakes in Blue Dragon just because they looked beautiful. Sakaguchi is also impressed by the Xbox Live network, noting the expense and difficulty that Square encountered in building networks for its games.

As for the 360's performance in Japan, Sakaguchi says it's all about marketing. For instance, he loves Gears of War (we already knew that), but says it was so poorly marketed that it's virtually unknown in Japan. Sakaguchi believes that Microsoft still hasn't latched onto a marketing campaign on par with "Jump In," and he says that "Do! do! do!" isn't cutting it.

Concerning Sony's PS3, Sakaguchi is unimpressed, stating, "Kutaragi-san's architecture ... seven DSPs and a low-powered CPU. I don't like the PS3's architecture." Sakaguchi believes that programmers want to create good software, but PS3 designer, Ken Kutaragi, has made it very difficult. The PS3 disses don't stop their either. When questioned about motion control, Kutaragi says that he finds it unnecessary for the kinds of games he develops (RPGs). Furthermore, he notes that the 360 controller is the "the best one that I've seen, especially the analog. And it's easy to operate, and it's really reactive, unlike the Sixaxis."

When questioned about Final Fantasy and how he would feel about competing with it should it ever grace the 360, Sakaguchi welcomes the challenge. Furthermore, he believes the series should be ported to the Xbox 360, as it would be very successful in North America and Europe. He also notes that the White Engine (Final Fantasy XIII's engine) is multiplatform, implying that a 360 port would be relatively easy.

yeah, it's going to be very interesting to see how the wii figures into this generation down the line. love it or hate it (i own one and i am neutral about it), you still have to admit it's inferior in terms of hardware power to the other two but on the other hand, it forces developers into coming up with original and interesting ideas for the wiimote. however, that also leads to the question, will developers want to spend their time and resources doing such?

Boris Schneider-Johne, Xbox Product Manager of Microsoft Germany, today hints at his blog, called dreisechtig.net (German for threesixty), that Devil May Cry 4 may only be the first of three exclusive PS3-games coming also to Xbox 360.

On his blog, he posted the following phrase:

"One down, two to go"

Followed by the names of three games: Devil May Cry (striked), Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.

It is unknown if this is only a personal wish of Schneider-Johne, or that maybe Microsoft has more surprise for us coming soon. But now Devil May Cry 4 has made the final step, nothing seems to be unthinkable anymore.

I love my Wii but they are seriously dropping the ball with online. I will eventually buy a "next gen" system to go along with the Wii and it's definitely looking like 360 is the way to go. It's entirely possible that sony will make a comeback within a year or two but it sure doesn't look that way so far. Before the PS3 launch I'd have never thought I would buy an Xbox, I love my PS2, but ever since the price point announcement and everything following that, PS3 is very unappealing (but Home looks kind of rad.)

We've confirmed with trusted sources that the black Xbox 360 is indeed coming (the image above is of the original 360 dev kit, FYI), and will be dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite. Here's what you need to know about it:

* The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
* The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
* Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
* Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
* We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
* Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.

I had to buy an HDMI cable for my new HD receiver tonight and I found a Belkin one downtown at a computer shop for $25. That's cheap for here, and it's even brand name. At BestBuy the guy was selling them for like $80-$120. I had gone down with the intention of buying a generic one for $30 so I came away with a good deal.

i'm under the impression HDMI is just DVI with the sound in one wire but both are superior to component in terms of picture quality. if you want true high definition you need to go with HDMI and (in the opinion of sony) 1080p.

the system will also be running cooler and quieter, as i assume they have fixed the extreme volume of the dvd drive when it runs.

well yea that's gotta be true since component is analog and dvi/hdmi are digital. 1080p can suck my anus though. I read that the most recent 360s have a new dvd drive in them that's quieter (benq brand i think)

SDF: Boycotting Capcom

It would appear the SDF [Sony Defense Force] have started up a petition to boycott Capcom 's merchandise including Devil May Cry 4. (Why)? Well the reason they've decided to do this is because Capcom have decided to release DMC4 on Xbox 360.

"To Capcom,

We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold our option of buying your product."

There are two people queuing for a PS3. The first one is a woman. All the other people in this picture are journalists and PR people who were probably expecting a better turn out, plus security guards who can't believe how easy the job is as all they have to do is take the names of a few meek writers who want to take photos for their blogs.

The launch of Sony's PlayStation 3 games console got off to a feeble start last night with officials, media and security outnumbering customers for most of the evening.

Over 500 retailers around the country threw open their doors as the clock struck 12:00am, expecting the frenzy that accompanied the games console's overseas debuts.

But most stores were virtually deserted, despite the 20,000 pre-orders Sony said it had received.

Even at the official launch event held at Myer's Pitt Street store in Sydney's CBD and attended by Sony's local managing director, Michael Ephraim, media and security outnumbered PS3 fans until at least 11:00pm.

At midnight, about 40 PS3 buyers had arrived to collect their consoles, causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem.

Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway.

The scene was a stark contrast to the US launch in November last year, where one man was shot by thieves and fights broke out over limited stock.

In Britain, where the PS3 was also launched today, two major Oxford Street stores in London - Game and HMV - cancelled their launch events amid police fears of muggings.

Danny Zarka, 31, was first in line to collect his PS3, which was handed to him personally by Mr Ephraim and Myer CEO Bernie Brookes.

The advertising executive from Pyrmont was shocked because he had arrived after 9pm, yet still found himself at the front of the queue.

"I'm surprised there aren't more people here, I thought the place would be packed," he said.

The PS3 launches with a total of 30 games, each with a recommended retail price of $99.95.

One of those games is Gran Turismo: HD, which Sony is offering free - as a download from the Playstation Network - to all PS3 buyers.

And Sony said the first 20,000 people to register their PS3 online would receive a free copy of the latest James Bond movie Casino Royale on Blu-ray disc.

From today, Sony will launch into its $6 million marketing campaign, which it hopes will convince the public that the PS3 is not just a games machine but an all-in-one home entertainment system.

The campaign will stress the inclusion of a high-definition Blu-ray disc player, sleek design, 60GB hard drive, web browser and, most importantly, the PS3's ability to act as a multimedia hub for organising photos, music and movies.

This is crucial if Sony is to convince consumers that the PS3's $999 price tag is justified, in the face of the $650 Xbox 360 and $399 Nintendo Wii.

A Sony spokeswoman said: "The marketing tag line for PlayStation 3 is 'This is Living' and you'll see this develop with time to incl.ude broader messaging beyond gaming enthusiasts; after launch we will begin our approach to communicate with entertainment enthusiasts and beyond."

Travis Johnson, a veteran advertising executive at Universal McCann, was partly responsible for the Xbox 360's launch marketing campaign. He described Sony's $6 million budget as "sizeable", and said the Xbox 360 only launched with a $1 million marketing spend.

The PS3 was originally slated for release locally on November 17, but this date was pushed back to today due to production delays.

It has meant the Wii and Xbox 360 have a significant head-start in the next-generation console wars - the Wii has been on sale since early December, while the Xbox 360 has its first birthday next week.

Another potential stumbling block for Sony is the fact that it has priced the PS3 higher in Australia than it has overseas. The console sells for just ¥60,000 ($630) in Japan and $US599 ($740) in the US.

Mr Ephraim said in an interview last month the higher price was justified because factors such as Australia's currency exchange rate and small population size when compared with the US led to a higher cost of doing business.

Owners of the previous PlayStation, the PS2, should also bear in mind that PS2 games will not necessarily be compatible with the PS3.

A full list of compatible games can be found here - 1782 PS2 titles are listed, which represent the majority of the 2308 PS2 games that Sony shipped to Australia.

they rushed the ps3 in a high stakes market. it sucks. they fucked up pretty bad. their stereo systems last quite a while. my parents had one that lasted 16 years. I had a sony walkman when i was a kid, dropped it frequently, still kept on ticking. i seriously doubt that they've let everything decline to the point of being no better than walmart mystery brands in the past few years.

PlayStation is a *huge* asset to Sony, there is no denying that the failure of PS3 will have a significant impact on the company. You and Nimrod need to get a room. Sony's not doing so hot across the board right now, and in the past, PS2 was their savior.

Oh, and a $100 price drop on the $600 model is bullshit. Phasing out the 20GB is the dumbest thing ever, but of course, Sony's pushing retailers to do it and cutting production on them as well.

Forget wireless, sell it as an optional adapter, that's where Sony can make a ton of money anyway. Forget card readers, you can get a USB based reader for $10 on newegg but once again, Sony could sell their own. Then just pack in a 40GB notebook hard drive and sell the $500 model for $400.

I didn't want to believe anything bad posted about the quality of Sony's products after I'd had two monitors and one TV survive ridiculous beatings of spilled milk, earthquakes, things thrown at them and falling of chairs etc. to work perfectly fine for eleven years or so.

But my most recent sony TV just died on me cause of the humidity we had. My old TV wouldn't have done that. It would've persevered. I guess the company went soft somewhere down the line either that or, more likely, it's all probability and their products are of a general medium quality and I've been lucky till recently.
